Man City submit £70m offer for “spectacular” star with Pep personally keen

Manchester City have now submitted a huge offer for a “spectacular” star, as Pep Guardiola believes he could be the ideal addition to the forward line.

Man City eyeing new forward after victory at Nottingham Forest

Man City maintained the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon, and Rayan Cherki put in another impressive performance.

Indeed, the Frenchman assisted Tijjani Reijnders’ opening goal, before going on to score the winner with just seven minutes left of normal time, and Guardiola singled out the 22-year-old for praise after the game.

Phil Foden has also been enjoying a solid campaign, registering seven goals and two assists in the Premier League, while the Blues have held advanced talks over a deal for AFC Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, whose £65m release clause expires on January 10th.

However, Man City have now submitted a huge bid for a different forward, according to a report from Spain, which states a €80m (£70m) offer has been tabled for Real Madrid star Rodrygo, as Pep believes the Brazilian would be the ideal addition to his attack.

The Spanish side have rejected the proposal, however, as it was structured as an initial €60m (£52m) payment, with €20m (£17m) in potential add-ons, and they are keen to receive £70m as a fixed sum.

City remain determined to get a move for the Madrid star over the line, but the La Liga side aren’t in a rush to cash-in, so it could be tricky to get a deal done.

Rodrygo could be "spectacular" signing for Man City

Lauded as “spectacular” by former manager Carlo Ancelotti, it is no surprise Man City are so keen on the 24-year-old, who has been in impressive form recently, grabbing two assists in Madrid’s 2-0 victory against Sevilla in La Liga last time out.

The Osasco-born winger also scored in his side’s 2-1 loss against City in the Champions League earlier this season, and he has contributed a whopping 70 goals and 55 assists in 291 outings for the Spanish side.

Not only that, but the former Santos man is an extremely impressive dribbler of the ball, averaging 5.79 progressive carries per 90 over the past year, and 2.34 successful take-ons, which places him in the 94th and 91st percentiles, when compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers.

Pep Guardiola drops 2-word response about Antoine Semenyo joining Man City

The Bournemouth winger is in demand…

1 ByBen Goodwin

Rodrygo clearly has the talent to succeed at the Etihad Stadium, but it would not be a major blow if City miss out, given that Cherki and Foden have been in such impressive form, while they are also advancing to sign Semenyo, who has scored nine Premier League goals this term.

Rangers’ 3 worst players v Motherwell

Rangers slipped up again in the Premiership on Sunday, surrendering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Ibrox.

Quickfire goals from Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala seemed to put the Gers in command, but second-half strikes from Motherwell’s Jordan Roberts and Kaiyne Woolery saw the home side miss the chance to close within a point of the league leaders, who had dropped two points earlier in the afternoon.

It was the fifth time in eight league matches in 2022 that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team had failed to win.

Here at The Transfer Tavern, we look into the three worst-rated starters for the Light Blues as per statistical specialists SofaScore, with players required to feature for at least 45 minutes for ranking.

Allan McGregor – 6.2

McGregor appeared to have made the number one spot his own at Ibrox, with this his 17th straight league start after rotation between the sticks earlier in the season, but could this shaky performance lead to questions about his place in the team?

While the 40-year-old completed all of his 18 passes, he conceded two goals from just three shots on target.

Scott Arfield – 6.6

Arfield is also enjoying a prolonged run in the team, making six consecutive league starts, but you could argue that he failed to repay Van Bronckhorst’s faith on Sunday.

The Canadian misplaced 11 of his 51 passes (22%) and lost possession 15 times overall. He also won only just three of his eight duels on the ground and in the air, while none of his four shots hit the target.

Joe Aribo – 6.9

Aribo is one of the first names on the team sheet at Ibrox, having been selected for 25 out of 28 league matches so far this season, but this was one of the Nigerian’s more difficult outings.

He came off second best in four duels and surrendered the ball 10 times in total. Also, while he has been averaging 1.8 key passes per game over the season as a whole, he wasn’t able to create a chance against Motherwell yesterday.

Leeds manager Marsch confirms backroom team

New Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has officially confirmed his backroom team ahead of the Whites’ Premier League clash with Leicester City.

The Lowdown: Marsch prepares for Leeds bow

The American became Leeds’ new boss earlier this week, replacing Marcelo Bielsa after his emotional sacking last weekend.

Marsch has little time to grow into his new job, with the Whites finding themselves in a Premier League relegation battle with 12 matches remaining.

Leicester make the trip to Elland Road on Saturday lunchtime, with Leeds desperately hoping a new manager bounce comes their way.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Backroom team confirmed

There were plenty of rumours this week surrounding Cameron Toshack joining as an assistant coach, and Marsch’s full set-up has now been revealed.

On Thursday, the club’s official website confirmed that Marsch’s new backroom team is complete.

Franz Schiemer joins after being the 48-year-old’s Assistant Head Coach at RB Salzburg, while former Swansea City coach Toshack also comes in.

Meanwhile, Leeds Under-23s head coach Mark Jackson moves up to first-team level, having impressed in his previous role.

The Verdict: All set…

This is another step in the right direction for Marsch, who needs to have everyone pulling in the same direction ahead of a pivotal period in Leeds’ season.

He and his backroom team need to hit the ground running as much as the players, implementing their methods and ensuring a return to the Championship doesn’t happen.

For Jackson, it is a particularly heartwarming piece of news, having impressed so much with the U23s and proving to be a popular figure at Elland Road.

Celtic must axe Johnston this summer

Celtic headed into last weekend’s clash with the confidence of a 2-0 victory in midweek but the Hoops’ confidence could quite easily have been sapped away from them when Callum McGregor struck his penalty against the post.

It was an awful start for Ange Postecoglou’s Bhoys and at a stadium in the Tony Macaroni arena where their recent record is rather dismal, it didn’t bode well.

Yet, if there is one quality that the Australian has instilled in his players since taking the reins at Parkhead, it’s that the players should always press and never stop running.

He’s now found a tune out of James Forrest at long last too who bagged a rare goal this term to seal a 3-1 victory at Livi.

It’s safe to say that not everyone has found their feet under Postecoglou and one man who certainly hasn’t had his fair share of chances is Mikey Johnston.

In fact, you can argue that ever since Brendan Rodgers left for England, the Scot has struggled to ever make an impression.

Now at the age of 22, he is still a very young footballer but there is a growing sense that time is running out for somebody who is now behind Forrest, Jota, Liel Abada, Kyogo and Daizen Maeda for a place on the flanks.

Yet, with a contract until 2025, there is no easy way out, that’s unless Celtic sanction his departure in the summer.

It would be a surprise if the £10k-per-week earner ever found regular minutes in Glasgow and as a result, he must be axed from the side.

Once dubbed the “new Ryan Christie” all the way back in 2019 by Chris Sutton, his career has never taken off, largely due to injury.

He has missed over 600 days of action including this term due to injuries and fitness in the last few years, meaning he’s been absent for a hugely concerning 74 fixtures as a result.

Now, axing him on that evidence would be rather harsh but the fact of the matter is that when he has played, the returns have been poor.

Last season, Johnston failed to find the net and indeed throughout 2021/22, he has not managed to beat the goalkeeper again.

A useful depth option but nothing more, he is far down on Postecoglou’s list of options and with impressive young players like Karamoko Dembele, Rocco Vata and Owen Moffat coming through, his future at Celtic looks bleak.

Celtic: Armstrong is thriving at Saints

When Celtic signed Stuart Armstrong in a deal worth around £1.75m back in February of 2015, few would have expected the central midfielder to be playing his football in the Premier League just three and a half years later.

However, after scoring a highly impressive 28 goals and registering 25 assists over his winning four Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups, this is exactly what Armstrong was doing – with Southampton paying Celtic £7m for the 29-year-old’s services back in the summer of 2018.

Since then, the Scotland international has turned into something of a stalwart in the Saints midfield, making 122 appearances over his three and a half year spell with the South Coast side, as well as turning in a consistently impressive level of performance in this time.

Indeed, over his 29 Premier League appearances in 2018/19, the £12.5m-rated man earned a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.71, over his 30 league outings in 2019/20 he earned a seasonal match rating of 6.73 and over his 33 top-flight fixtures last term he earned a seasonal match rating of 6.76.

It has been a very similar story for the £58k-per-week midfielder over his 14 Premier League games so far this season, with the 29-year-old having made an average of 1.1 key passes, taken 1.9 shots, made 0.5 interceptions, 0.6 tackles and won 2.6 duels per game – with these returns seeing the player who Ralph Hasenhuttl dubbed a “role model” average a SofaScore match rating of 6.72.

As such, while £7m is certainly not a figure to be sniffed at, considering the fact that Armstrong has been an extremely consistent performer for a mid-table Premier League side for the best part of four years, it is easy to see why the Saints manager dubbed the midfielder’s transfer fee “cheap.”

Indeed, should Celtic have held onto the Scot a little while longer, they could well have demanded a much higher figure in order to part with the 29-year-old, something that the club will undoubtedly be regretting.

David Moyes disappointed with Antonio

West Ham United manager David Moyes has expressed his disappointment with Michail Antonio following the striker’s poor display in the Hammers’ 3-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

The Lowdown: Antonio’s performance

During the all-London clash, the Jamaica international was substituted early in the second half after failing to make an impact on the game. In his 56 minutes on the pitch, the 31-year-old had just 21 touches of the ball and lost possession nine times, completing a paltry four passes.

Even as the Irons’ lone striker, Antonio illustrated his lack of attacking threat by failing to produce a single shot on target, capping off a disappointing display for him and the Hammers.

The Latest: Moyes’ comments on Antonio

When questioned whether Antonio was just tired following his 36th appearance of the season, Moyes told football.london:

“No, I did not think he reached his level. We needed Michail to play at a really high level and the level of the Tottenham front players was such an unbelievably high level. We had a lot of the ball and I watched them here against Everton and it was very similar Everton had a lot of the ball and without much of the ball Tottenham were a couple of goals up and it is similar to today. We had the ball for the opening 15 minutes or so but they were two goals up.”

When further questioned about a potential loss of confidence after missing two chances, the manager replied:

“Two chances yeah. I do not know if he is struggling with confidence. Mich is a good guy and he does not come over that way [as a confidence player] but if you are a No.9 at any football club you want to score goals and that will fill your confidence. He had two good opportunities and somebody told me Spurs had four shots on target and we had one and Tottenham scored three and we scored one.”

The Verdict: Could turn to Yarmolenko

An alternative option for Moyes could be to use Andriy Yarmolenko at centre-forward, with the Ukrainian recently back in the fold after a period of compassionate leave due to the war in his homeland.

However, since his return, the winger has netted two very important goals. He came off the bench and scored in the 2-1 win against Aston Villa, and even more crucially, he bagged the winning goal which sent West Ham through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League at Sevilla’s expense.

If the Hammers’ sole striker is unable to produce the goods in the final third, Yarmolenko could therefore prove to be a great alternative option for Antonio, with the former occasionally lining out in a number nine role during his career.

ottenham Hotspur: Spurs expert drops claim after Japhet Tanganga injury

Tottenham Hotspur will keep faith and not look to sell defender Japhet Tanganga after he suffered a season-ending injury, claims Football Insider’s Spurs pundit John Wenham.

The Lowdown: Tanganga’s injury

During the Lilywhites’ 2-0 loss to Chelsea back in January, the 22-year-old’s game came to a premature end as he sustained a knee injury which saw to his substitution in the 56th minute. As a result, the defender has been sidelined ever since, and has missed Tottenham’s last 11 games.

On Friday (18 March), the north London club announced that Tanganga had undergone surgery on his knee, meaning that he will be out of action for the rest of the season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Wenham’s claim

Wenham, an ‘expert’ at the club according to Football Insider, has insisted that Tanganga will remain as a long-term prospect for the club.

Speaking with FI, he said: “The news is devastating for him but Tanganga is still under contract until 2025.

“He counts as homegrown and club affiliated. For me, there’s definitely zero chance of Tottenham moving him on.

“He is valuable. He can come in at centre-half as part of a three or at right wing-back.

“There are a lot of players who you would look to get rid of ahead of him.

“He’s on relatively low wages too. He has also made 19 appearances this season which is 18 more than Joe Rodon.

“If you are talking about players who can be moved on, that’s all you need to say.

“It’s a shame he’s injured but we have plenty of cover at the moment.

“If there was any time for him to get injured, it would be now because we actually have a bit of depth.”

The Verdict: Useful to Spurs

At just 22 years old, Tanganga potentially has a whole decade remaining in the top-flight if he can continue to develop and fulfil his potential, so it would be silly to cut him loose.

Hailed as “special”  by Gary Neville, he can hopefully get a clean slate after his surgery in the knowledge that he still has a future in north London when totally fit.

With the ability to play either centre-back or as a full-back, the Englishman could prove to be an extremely useful asset to manager Antonio Conte, who usually likes to utilise three central defenders alongside wing-backs.

Therefore, whilst this injury will come as a major blow for the player, his place in the Tottenham squad should be safe.

Forrest ruled out of massive Celtic clash

Celtic midfielder James Forrest will miss his side’s vital Scottish Premiership showdown with Rangers through injury, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Huge clash at Ibrox

The Hoops face their biggest game of the season on Sunday afternoon, making the trip to face their biggest rivals at Ibrox.

Celtic currently lead the way by three points at the top of the table, so Postecoglou will know how priceless victory would be this weekend, even though avoiding defeat remains the key.

The league leaders will have to make do without an old head, however, with an injury blow emerging in the build-up on Friday.

The Latest: Forrest ruled out

Speaking to the media on Friday, Postecoglou confirmed that Forrest would miss out, having failed to recover from an injury picked up last month:

“In terms of injuries, everyone has got through the international window well, the only one who is not available for the weekend is James Forrest. He still has a bit of a niggle from his last game, so he’s the one that’s ruled out.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Experience will be missed

In truth, Forrest hasn’t been the influential player he once was this season, only managing eight starts in the league, with a knee injury keeping him sidelined in the early months of the campaign.

That being said, the Scot’s vast experience in this fixture could have made him a priceless figure on Sunday, with the occasion unlikely to get the better of him.

That nous will be missed at Ibrox – he still has four goals this season and has won 18 out of 25 total appearances against Rangers – but the hope is that Celtic still have enough quality to pull through and show that they are the champions in waiting.

Leeds: Trincao for Raphinha deal mooted

Leeds United could be making a huge mistake as a transfer update emerges on Francisco Trincao’s possible move to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Raphinha is someone who Barcelona are keen to land when the transfer window opens, with the Brazilian winger’s agent, Deco, having close ties to those at the Camp Nou.

Now, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) have revealed that the Whites would be open to taking a young player in return from the La Liga giants, and that Trincao could be someone who moves in the opposite direction if Raphinha does make the switch.

Orta making a mistake

Given Trincao is on the books at Barcelona, there’s no surprise that a number of people, including his former teammates, have waxed lyrical about his talents, with Ronald Araujo saying: “He is not so fast or intense but I think he has a little more magic.  He was an amazing kid, very skinny. Physically, he was very poor but with the ball he was magic, doing tricks, so skilful.”

And, about the 22-year-old previously, his former teammate at Braga, Abel Ruiz, said: “I would say Trincao looks like Messi, but you can’t compare anyone to Leo. He is the typical left-winger who has a good dribble, someone who’s skilled. If he plays on the right, he goes inside and hits with his left. On the left, he overflows and scores many goals.

“He’s a very good player and I’m sure that he will do very well at Barca. Trincao, honestly, is a very complete player. He’s more than ready to play for Barca. His shot is incredible.”

But, since making the loan switch to Wolves last summer, the Portuguese ace just simply hasn’t delivered the goods on a consistent basis in English football.

Dubbed as being “toothless” by Nathan Judah, the winger has earned a measly average match rating of 6.60 from WhoScored, making him one of the lowest-rated Wolves players to start more than ten league games – indeed, only Leander Dendoncker figures lower than him in that regard.

Trincao appears to be someone who is very much streaky in his displays, capable of pulling off the sublime like he did against Leeds themselves when he scored one and made one, but also going on a run of nine games without a single goal contribution prior to that clash at Molineux.

The £25m-rated trickster may have the natural talent to potentially being an exciting addition to this Leeds team, but his overall performances and lack of consistency in the Premier League make him a very questionable signing for Marsch this summer.

Seeing Leeds swap Trincao for Raphinha would be an almighty backwards step, and it’s a mistake Victor Orta would be very wise to avoid.

Best striker since Kane: Spurs prepare move to sign £63m Premier League star

Tottenham Hotspur have been hunting for a new talisman over the last couple of seasons, but none have been able to emulate the incredible levels achieved by Harry Kane.

The 32-year-old rose through the ranks in North London, even being sent on numerous loan spells in the EFL, before making himself a fan-favourite in the Lilywhites’ first-team.

He would spend a decade scoring goals for fun in the Premier League, subsequently achieving a total of 280 goals for the club – the most of any player in their history.

Such a feat highlights his incredible goalscoring prowess, but his ability to score 30+ goals in 50% of his ten years in North London further showcases his eye for the back of the net.

Whilst no player has been able to replicate such levels in recent months, Thomas Frank could be about to be rewarded with a new talisman to help him in his quest for success.

Spurs prepare move for Premier League striker in January

Over the last couple of weeks, Spurs’ hunt for a new striker has taken them across Europe, subsequently leading to links over a move for Porto star Samu Aghehowa.

The Spaniard has been a player in tremendous form during the 2025/26 campaign, as seen by his remarkable tally of 18 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions.

However, any deal could well prove to be one outside of the Lilywhites’ range, especially considering the Portuguese side currently value him at £80m.

As a result, their hunt for a new striker has brought them back to England, with Manchester City star Omar Marmoush one player the hierarchy are targeting at present.

According to TEAMtalk, Frank’s men are considering an approach for the Egyptian international who has only started two league games so far this campaign following a mega-money £63m move last January.

The report also states that a loan deal with an option to buy could be the perfect option for all parties, but that other sides are also keen on a move this January.

Why Marmoush would be Spurs’ best striker since Kane

Since Kane’s move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, Spurs have tried a whole host of options in the number nine position to try and fill the void at the top end of the pitch.

Richarlison is currently Frank’s number one option in such a position, as seen by his tally of 10 starts and seven goals in the Premier League so far this season.

As a result, Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel have both been impact players, often having to resort to minutes off the bench – leading to a combined tally of two goals in the league during 2025/26.

However, prior to the Dane’s arrival, Solanke was the main number nine for the Lilywhites, something which was to be expected given his club-record £65m transfer.

He ended last season on 16 goals across all competitions, but has been restricted to just 31 minutes of league action this time around due to an ongoing ankle issue.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

There’s no doubt he’s been the closest replacement to Kane, but that could be about to change should Marmoush make a switch to North London during the upcoming window.

Whilst he’s often struggled to dislodge Erling Haaland from his number nine role at the Etihad, his form at Eintracht Frankfurt is evidence of the talent he possesses.

Prior to his move last January, the 26-year-old netted a staggering 15 goals in his first 17 league games, not to mention also registering nine assists in the process.

His underlying figures further highlight his quality, with many of which place him above the likes of Kane in the Bundesliga during the 2024/25 campaign.

Marmoush, who’s been dubbed “phenomenal” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley, registered 2.3 shots on target and 0.93 goals per 90 – with both the highest of any player in Germany’s top-flight.

He also created 2.2 chances per 90, whilst also achieving a dribble success rate of 60% – subsequently showcasing his ability to provide for those around him in the final third.

The Egyptian’s talents were further reflected in his tally of 7.8 touches in the opposition box per 90, which could hand Frank the poacher-type forward he’s craved in recent months.

Whilst it’s unclear if the player or his current club would sanction a move this winter, it’s evident that Marmoush would be a sensational addition for the Lilywhites.

If he can replicate his numbers from his time at Frankfurt, he would certainly be the starting centre forward in North London and allow the club to end their hunt for a new talisman.
