Everton given selection boost pre Liverpool

Everton have received a selection boost ahead of the Merseyside Derby with Liverpool at Goodison Park after Rafa Benitez revealed he has no fresh injury concerns, while Andre Gomes has started training with the first team again.

What’s the word?

The Toffees will be aiming to end a seven-game winless run when they host their local rivals in this midweek clash, and their chances of doing just that have been increased by Benitez’s latest update.

In Tuesday’s press conference, the 61-year-old revealed that he’s only set to be without three players for the visit of the Reds due to fitness concerns, with Richarlison also back from suspension.

“We have three players injured. Davies, Yerry Mina and Calvert-Lewin. Andre Gomes has started training with the team,” confirmed Benitez.

Everton will also be boosted by the fact that key midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure came through his first 90 minutes in several weeks unscathed over the weekend, providing hope that the hosts can cause an unlikely upset.

Rafa Benitez will be buzzing

News that Everton have no new injury concerns to contend with, combined with the fact that Doucoure is available for selection and Richarlison is back from suspension will surely have Benitez absolutely buzzing.

The Blues have slipped to 14th in the top-flight table after picking up just two points from a possible 21 in recent weeks, piling the pressure on the Spanish tactician. However, with key men now returning, it’s a huge boost when you consider they have a Merseyside derby on their plate this evening.

With Richarlison and Doucoure racking up a combined four goals and five assists in the Premier League between them this term, Benitez will be delighted to welcome both players back into his struggling setup, especially in a campaign where unavailability has plagued the Toffees squad.

It remains to be seen if the deadly duo can fire Everton to a positive result against Liverpool, but their return to action will certainly be warmly welcomed by everyone associated with Goodison Park.

And, in other news…Everton line up “leader of the year” to succeed Benitez, Toffees fans will be ecstatic

Suggested Solutions: How Everton can cope with the departure of Andre Gomes

[ad_pod ]

According to Calciomercato, Rome rivals Lazio and Roma are both keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, who is currently on loan with Everton.

It is thought that a deal taking the 25-year-old to Italy won’t be done until the summer, but interest from those Serie A giants could make it very hard for the Toffees to make Gomes’ switch to Goodison Park a permanent one, as the The Guardian have reported is Marco Silva’s desire.

In case Silva doesn’t get his wish though, the Portuguese coach ought to already be putting a plan in place for life without Gomes.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Place faith in Tom Davies

Davies is yet to really cement himself as a regular starter on Merseyside, but to have amassed almost 70 career appearances for the club by the age of 20 is impressive. Clearly, the England under-21 international is a player with huge potential.

He is still somewhat raw, and needs to improve his end product, but if Silva is bold and invests his faith in Davies as the heir to Gomes’ place in the side, then he could be handsomely rewarded for it when the Everton academy product flourishes.

Drop Sigurdsson deeper

Sigurdsson is certainly at his best in the No. 10 position, but as he approaches 30, his experience could perhaps be put to better use in a deeper role.

Gomes is currently tasked with operating as Everton’s deep-lying playmaker, initiating and orchestrating attacking moves from the heart of the pitch. Sigurdsson has the technical ability, composure and creativity to pull this off. However, defensive deficiencies could hold him back.

Steel over silk

With Morgan Schneiderlin far from the required quality to be a trusted regular in Everton’s starting XI, Idrissa Gueye is the only reliable defensive midfielder at Silva’s disposal. However, this often leaves the 29-year-old with far too much to do, as he has to offset the limitations in Gomes’ game.

On occasion, this overburdening of Gueye has led to Everton being overrun in midfield. With that in mind, finding a like-for-like replacement for Gomes may not be the wisest move. Instead, Silva ought to leave the attacking responsibility to his forwards, and focus on adding to some extra steel and resilience to his midfield contingent.

Rangers set for Goldson talks

A key Rangers update has emerged on the Ibrox club’s plans to deal with Connor Goldson’s situation in Glasgow.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record, the Gers are primed for fresh contract talks with the defender over a new deal at Ibrox and are not prepared to sell him for a cut-price fee this month.

The report claims that they would rather lose him for nothing at the end of the season than sell him now, with John Souttar said to be a target to replace him if the ex-Brighton man refuses to extend his current terms.

Delight

Rangers fans will surely be delighted with this update for several reasons. Firstly, the club attempting to tie him down to a new contract is excellent news as keeping him in Glasgow would be a major boost for Gio van Bronckhorst.

The Englishman has averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.18 in the Premiership this season. He has won 66% of his duels in the division and helped the Gers to keep nine clean sheets, after keeping 26 clean sheets in the league last term.

Ex-Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard previously lauded the £27k-per-week beast, telling The Scotsman: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a warrior.

“I can’t describe to you how well he has done for this team, not just in terms of what you have seen on the pitch but also his leadership on the inside of the club and his availability every single day.”

This highlights why fans will be buzzing with the club’s attempts to keep him and also why they will be delighted with Ross Wilson not wanting to cash in on him this month.

Losing a player of his quality would disrupt the defence heading into the second half of the campaign and could be detrimental to their chances of winning the title, as they’d be letting go of a player who has proven his quality at this level.

Finally, the fans will be happy to read that Souttar is being eyed as a potential replacement. The Hearts beast has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.43 in the Premiership and won 71% of his duels, suggesting that he is playing to a higher standard than Goldson at the moment and that is why he could be an excellent addition to the squad and one the fans would love.

Antony handed Man Utd lifeline as Erik ten Hag bizarrely claims 'no defender can stop' £85m winger despite his awful output in the final third

Erik ten Hag has launched a staunch defence of Antony despite repeatedly leaving the Manchester United winger out of his starting XI in recent weeks.

Ten Hag, who signed Antony from former club Ajax for £85m ($108m) in the summer of 2022, has not given the Brazilian a start since playing fourth division Newport County in the FA Cup in late January. Antony has not started a league game since his dire performance against Nottingham Forest on December 30, and it has been reported that United could cut their losses on the winger in the summer transfer window.

AdvertisementWHAT TEN HAG SAID

"I know from the past he is unstoppable, no defender can stop him because he's one of the quickest in the first 10 yards, when he plays that game I'm sure he will perform, he is resilient, he is a character," Ten Hag told a press conference on Tuesday.

Antony has scored just one goal this season and has only one assist, both of which came against Newport. His greatest humiliation, however, came when he was left out of the starting line-up against Fulham – on his 24th birthday – in favour of 19-year-old Omari Forson, who had never previously started for United. Antony was brought on in the 98th minute of the 2-1 defeat, which dealt a huge blow to United's top-four ambitions.

Porterfield ton sees Warks home

Warwickshire produced an outstanding team performance to beat the Unicorns by 10 wickets at Wormsley.

ScorecardWarwickshire produced an outstanding team performance to beat the Unicorns by 10 wickets at Wormsley.Chris Woakes, fresh from his his exertions with England Lions over the last couple of weeks, returned to the Warwickshire fold to take 4 for 24 from eight overs as the hosts were all out for 185.Will Porterfield and Varun Chopra made light work of the target, with the former striking a magnificent 100 not out from 89 balls while his partner struck the winning runs with a boundary in the 30th over to take him to an unbeaten 73.Bottom-placed Unicorns had just one win to their name from 11 matches and they were put into bat this afternoon, at one point slipping to 5 for 4. They were under pressure immediately as opening bowlers Chris Wright and Woakes conceded just one run between them in the opening three overs. The pressure eventually told as Vishal Tripathi was bowled by Woakes, who then dismissed Tom New and James Ord in his next over after Bradley Wadlan had fallen to Wright. In danger of sinking without trace, they then fell to 12 for 5 as 23-year-old Woakes accounted for Unicorns captain Keith Parsons. Although a helpful 35 from Lewis Hill helped to relieve some pressure.Glen Querl, batting at number nine, added 64 runs alongside Hill for the eighth wicket before the latter became Wright’s second scalp. Querl fell six runs shy of a half-century – falling lbw to Warwickshire debutant Ian Blackwell – after a magnificent 44 from just 27 balls. At 112 for 9, any hopes of posting a competitive total looked remote but last man Paul Hindmarch put his top-order colleagues to shame. In just his second List A match, Hindmarch, the 24-year-old Cumbrian, made exactly 50 off 49 balls to take his side to what looked like a defendable, if not competitive total.Chopra and Porterfield took their time to get to grips with the surface, with just one boundary coming in the first five overs. But they refused to panic and settled to their task thereafter, with Chopra hammering successive fours off Luis Reece.Porterfield was the first to his half-century with his ninth four and brought up three figures in the game’s penultimate over with a single off Querl. It was then left to Chopra to finish off the match in style with his 10th four as Warwickshire sealed victory with more than 10 overs to spare to boost their hopes of qualification from the group.

Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie was poor vs Liverpool

Newcastle United tasted their second successive defeat in the Premier League as they fell 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night.

Eddie Howe’s side took the lead thanks to a superb strike from Jonjo Shelvey, before goals from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold saw the Reds clinch all three points.

One man who’s certainly given the Newcastle boss some food for thought going forward, is Matt Ritchie.

The Scotland international found himself on the bench again before the game – he’s been out of the starting line-up since the clash against Arsenal – but following Jamal Lewis’ injury, was forced to come on very early in the first-half.

While having to deal with the likes of Salah and Alexander-Arnold was always going to be a thankless task, Ritchie just couldn’t get to pace with the game.

As per Sofascore, he made no tackles whatsoever and didn’t win a single duel in the time that he was on the pitch – compare that to the likes of Jacob Murphy and Joelinton who each won eight and nine respectively.

Ritchie also couldn’t get going the other way either, failing to attempt a single cross and actually having fewer touches than even goalkeeper Martin Dubravka too – a sign of just how much he was penned back.

And, Ritchie’s situation is made all the more pressing by the news that Lewis’ injury is said to be a “bad” one according to Howe.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Newcastle boss added: “It’s a hamstring injury, which is a surprise with Jamal because he’s obviously so athletic.

“He’s been excellent in terms of his athletic work for us so far, so for that to happen so early in the game, I was surprised.”

With Paul Dummett still not fully fit, and Lewis seemingly set for an extended period out on the side-lines, it appears Newcastle have no choice but to stick with Ritchie in that left-back role for the time being.

It’s another major headache for Howe and one that he would have been desperate to avoid, no doubt hoping to focus his attentions elsewhere.

The January transfer window has already seen them linked with a number of players, including Sven Botman at Lille and a potential new central midfielder too.

But, having Lewis and Dummett out, and Ritchie having to once again play in an unfamiliar role, a new left-back may be something for the Magpies boss to consider.

Ritchie’s performance certainly didn’t show anything like the quality that would suggest he can be a short-term answer, let alone a longer-term one.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have suffered a major injury blow…

It was a highlight of his life, but the response from fans wasn't always so kind in the past, with the Argentine sharing that it was different during his time at Barcelona. Messi claims that La Albiceleste's followers were "unfair" to him during his Catalan journey.

"I had a bad time. My family and the people who love me did too. [Critics in Argentina] were very unfair to a generation of players and they said a lot of bad things about me. I'm not spiteful," Messi said. "I feel it like a triumph for me to have changed that situation and won over all the people of Argentina. Today 95% or 100% of Argentines love me and that's a beautiful feeling."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 2016 Copa America was a turning point in his international career, after missing his penalty in the final against Chile. For a period of time following, he had even retired from the Argentina squad before returning shortly thereafter. Now, however, after the team's 2022 triumph, he feels the love and passion of the fans.

Revitalising Rashford, following Fergie's approach and inspired transfer business – Six ways Ten Hag has transformed Man Utd

After a chastening start to life at Old Trafford, the Dutch coach has transformed the Red Devils into a team chasing an unlikely quadruple

Erik ten Hag's reign at Manchester United could not have got off to a worse start. After losing 2-1 to Brighton at home on the opening day, the Red Devils travelled down to Brentford – where they were soundly beaten 4-0.

The result was treated with the sort of frenzied reaction that should be expected when United are on the wrong side of a drubbing, with naysayers warning that the club was damaged beyond repair.

But just a matter of months later, Ten Hag's side are threatening to sneak into the Premier League title race and challenge for four trophies. After so many false dawns, United finally appear set to shake off the malaise that has shrouded Old Trafford for a decade.

The Dutchman has been the architect of this quite remarkable turnaround, instilling discipline, making some inspired moves in the transfer market and improving several players that had previously appeared destined for the scrap heap.

Below, ahead of the Carabao Cup final, GOAL takes a deep dive into exactly how Ten Hag has turned United's fortunes around so swiftly…

Getty ImagesRevitalising Rashford

The 2021-22 season was seriously rough for Marcus Rashford. It began with a niggling injury and he never got going after that, finishing the campaign with a sickening 12-game scoring drought in the Premier League.

In truth, Rashford looked unmotivated and uninterested at times, and there were loud rumblings that he might call time on his United career in the summer.

However, Ten Hag's arrival has transformed his fortunes. It is no overstatement to describe Rashford as the most in-form player in Europe right now, with the 24 goals he has plundered in all competitions already surpassing his tally from any other previous season.

Ten Hag's role in this resurgence is pretty simple, really. When he first met Rashford he told him: "I want to see you smile, I want to see your teeth. Now we see it often. I think he’s in a happy place, the whole dressing room is in a happy place, there is a lot of confidence and belief in this squad."

Rashford's improvement is the textbook example of Ten Hag's impeccable man-management skills. He has restored the forward's confidence and the thought of him being sold is now completely laughable.

AdvertisementInstilling Ferguson levels of discipline

Recently, Ten Hag's red-wine fuelled meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson made headlines, with the current United boss revealing that he "cannot wait for the next one".

Harking back to the glorious Fergie era has been less of a help and more of a hindrance for some of the Dutchman's predecessors, but it's clear that there are plenty of similarities between the pair.

Most strikingly, like Ferguson, Ten Hag runs his dressing room with iron-clad discipline. No one has been immune from the code of conduct this season. Even Rashford, in the form of his life, was dropped to the bench after arriving late to a meeting, while big-money signing Jadon Sancho was placed on an individual training program to correct his mental and physical struggles.

There has also been a clear change in the way the players address the media, something Ten Hag explained following his side's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace back in January.

"What I want to bring in is a culture of high standards, values, accountability and transparency. So honestly that is our values that I want to set and control, both internal and external with the media and the fans," he said.

GettyMoving on from Ronaldo

Of course, the most revealing example of United's newfound discipline was the protracted Cristiano Ronaldo saga.

Only a special leader can take on one of the most influential sports people on the planet, but Ten Hag did exactly that – and 'won'.

The first signs of discontent appeared during a pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano, where Ronaldo – who was pushing for a move away from the club at the time – was among the United players to depart before full-time. Ten Hag described the incident as "unacceptable", refusing to brush his disrespect under the carpet.

In November, he repeated the trick, heading straight down the tunnel following his side's victory over Tottenham. Ronaldo later explained in that infamous Piers Morgan interview that his actions were a result of being "provoked" by Ten Hag, who only saw fit to use him as a late substitute.

That wasn't the only mud thrown in the head coach's direction either…

"I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me," he also told Morgan. "If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you."

This attack would result in Ronaldo leaving Old Trafford shortly after, something many suspected Ten Hag wanted all along despite his often positive press conference comments.

Ronaldo is now at Al-Nassr, while United – free from the media spotlight his doomed second spell constantly brought – could end their lengthy trophy drought when they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Getty ImagesInspired transfer dealings

The jury's still out on Antony and United probably could do with another striker, but generally Ten Hag has got almost everything else right in the transfer window so far.

Lisandro Martinez's signing was widely panned in the summer, most notably by Jamie Carragher, who has since been forced to backtrack following the Argentine's superb form. Christian Eriksen – incredibly, a free transfer – has proved to be an inspired piece of business too, giving United a far more incisive edge in the final third.

The cream of the crop, however, has to be the signing of Casemiro. Costing £70 million ($84.6m) from Real Madrid, the Brazilian has had a restorative effect on the United midfield, adding much-needed solidity and control by breaking up the much-maligned Scott McTominay-Fred pivot.

Under new owners, Ten Hag could be handed a transfer war chest and the club would be wise to listen to his recommendations due to his near-spotless recruitment record.

Ghana-Nigeria Combined XI: Essien vs Mikel

Which of these Chelsea greats would make our Super Eagles-Black Stars combined XI?

Goal/GettyGhana-Nigeria Combined XI

Ahead of this week’s World Cup qualifying double header between Nigeria and Ghana, GOAL Africa are picking our dream combined XI between these two West African heavyweights.

Both the Super Eagles and the Black Stars have storied histories in continental and global competition, and our shortlist for this combined Dream Team was overflowing with elite African talent.

However, only eleven stars can make the cut between these two West African giants, which of these two Chelsea greats would make the cut?

AdvertisementLefty Shivambu/Gallo Images/Getty ImagesInternational Career

Despite being a part of an excellent Ghanaian generation, Essien only featured in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments—largely a consequence of the injury problems that undermined his career.

While he reached the final in 2010, the Black Stars ultimately fell short at the hands of Egypt. Mikel went one further as part of Stephen Keshi’s fine side, and got his hands on the big one in 2013.

The Nigerian also went on to reach four Afcon semis during his international career, most recently finishing third in 2019.

He missed out on three editions between 2012 and 2017, but did feature in three World Cups, reaching the Last 16 at Brazil 2014.

While Essien was present for Ghana’s debut display and their run to the Last 16 in 2006, injury denied him a place in the team that reached the quarters four years later.

Winner: Mikel

These two are immensely decorated at club level, with the majority of their silverware coming ast part of Chelsea’s magnificent flurry of successes under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Di Matteo.

Essien won two Premier League winner’s medals at Chelsea, and was an unused substitute in the 2012 Champions League final, where Mikel did feature in the victory over Bayern Munich.

The pair each won three FA Cups with Chelsea, although while the Nigerian was still around for the Europa League triumph of 2013—by which point Essien had departed—The Bison did win two Ligue 1 titles as part of a magnificent Olympique Lyonnais side.

Getty ImagesIndividual Accolades

Essien comfortably outclasses Mikel here, probably testament to him being seen as a far more dynamic and impactful player during his peak years.

The midfield powerhouse never won Caf’s African Footballer of the Year award—among the finest continental stars not to do so—although he did clinch the BBC version of the prize.

He did make Caf’s podium on five occasions though, and indeed, no one has finished in third place more times than the Ghana star.

The midfielder was Ligue 1 Player of the Year for 2005, only the third African player after Ali Benarbia and Didier Drogba to win the award, and was named in Caf’s Team of the Year on four occasions.

Mikel was never really in contention for these kinds of honours during his senior career, having won plenty of individual accolades as a youngster, for both Chelsea and at the Fifa World Youth Championship.

He twice made the Nations Cup Team of the Tournament, once finished runner-up in the African Player of the Year award, and twice made Caf’s Team of the Year.

Did Mikel deserve more individual accolades during his career?
