Premier League faces set backs

There is sad news waiting for BNS, the most renowned and perhaps the only completely furnished stadium of Bangladesh, that it may deprive its huge crowd from watching the star-studded Premier Division Cricket League 2001-2002

Shahryar Khan20-Mar-2002There is sad news waiting for BNS, the most renowned and perhaps the only completely furnished stadium of Bangladesh, that it may deprive its huge crowd from watching the star-studded Premier Division Cricket League 2001-2002. Premier Division League had provided the most enthralling moments for its spectators, as it is the only limited over match league. The 7th Bangladesh Games had just saw its finish and one would find it hard that there were four cricket pitches here in BNS even a month ago. The tracks are absolutely unplayable and will take quite a bit of time to make those doable for cricket. The league is going to start off from April, therefore, the organizers had to settle on some makeshift grounds to run the matches. The matches will be played on three different venues in BKSP, Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium and most likely in Fotullah Stadium that is near Narayanganj, a small town 15 miles away from the city. Some of the prominent cricketers and club officials are revealing dissatisfactory notion over playing in Fotullah that is so far away from the madding crowd." In BKSP we have accommodation for staying, but what about Fotullah? It will take hours to return to Dhaka, as we all are quite aware of the traffic jam starting from evening. Its real disappointing if you have to sit around for three or four hours in the bus after the match," said Khaled Masud, the present captain of the national squad, now playing for Victoria Club in Premier." Besides think about the weather condition its so torrid in mid April. We will have to play under the hottest sun of the year, which is so tough when you are playing limited over matches where there is no chance of relaxing.I am afraid a good number of matches would be rain affected too," said he.Bangladesh has no International schedule either in April or May. The players from national squad or from other ranks are waiting for the League to be started. Last year they missed it cause they were in Zimbabwe at that time.

Leeds: Bielsa must drop Bamford vs Saints

After thrashing Burnley last time out in the Premier League, Leeds United will be desperate to pick up where they left off when they take on Southampton on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side ran riot at Turf Moor, beating the Clarets 4-0 thanks to goals from Mateusz Klich, Jack Harrison and a brace from summer signing Rodrigo.

However, one man who struggled over the course of the game, unlike his teammates, was Patrick Bamford.

The striker netted in the 3-1 victory over Spurs recently but that was his only goal in his last seven Premier League games, and he just seems to have gone off the boil in recent weeks.

His display at Brighton earlier this month was a case in point, with Bamford unable to get himself involved in the game, with Bielsa eventually deciding to replace him with Rodrigo before the hour mark. His tallies of 15 touches and 12 successful passes were the lowest among Leeds’ starting XI at the Amex Stadium.

Writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live that day, Beren Cross gave him a 4/10, adding: “Barely had a kick. As he was in the first game, he was swamped by the three centre-backs. The latest in a long line of frustrating matches for the striker with any Golden Boot hopes long gone.”

That anonymous showing was replicated again at the weekend, with the £16.2m-rated man struggling massively to get himself involved, with Burnley’s two centre-backs snuffling him with ease.

As per Sofascore, he had just nine touches of the ball in the entire time that he was on the pitch, making only five successful passes, which unsurprisingly was by far the lowest of any starter. He also had one shot on goal, provided no key passes and – perhaps most tellingly – lost all four of his duels, with Burnley physically overpowering him time and again.

Cross gave him a five in his player ratings, adding: “Difficult afternoon for the striker, who would have craved the space which opened up later in the second half. James Tarkwoski and Ben Mee had him pocketed and isolated.”

After eventually being hooked in the 58th minute, Bamford has now been taken off just before the hour mark in two of his last three Premier League games; and with the season now winding down, it’s surely time for Bielsa to make the ruthless call and drop him from the starting line-up.

With Rodrigo netting two goals on Saturday, and Joe Gelhardt also waiting in the wings, it’s time for Bamford to make way after some shocking performances of late.

Meanwhile, a journalist has dropped a major Leeds United update…

Alioski’s move to Galatasaray not done yet

Ezgjan Alioski’s potential move to Galatasaray this summer isn’t yet guaranteed, with the Turkish giants also interested in Patrick van Aanholt.

The Lowdown: Alioski expected to leave

Alioski is widely expected to leave Leeds United at the end of the season, having made 168 appearances for the Whites and being a key man for a number of years. He has scored 22 times and registered 18 assists for the club.

Galatasaray have emerged as the strong favourites to acquire the 29-year-old’s signature, with some reports claiming a deal has already been agreed.

There could be a potential twist in the saga, however, following the emergence of a fresh report on the Turkish outfit.

The Latest: Van Aanholt also a target

According to Sporx [via Sport Witness], Galatasaray also see Crystal Palace left-back Van Aanholt as a possible option, with the Dutchman ironically linked with Leeds in the past, too.

The Turkish giants are set to decide between him and Alioski in the coming weeks.

The Verdict: Replacement still required

Whatever the eventual outcome, it appears highly unlikely that Alioski will end up staying put at Elland Road, so a replacement will be needed.

Leeds could do with bringing in a similarly experienced figure – someone who is actually a natural left-back, such as Nicolas Tagliafico, who has got three assists and averaged two tackles per game for Ajax in the Eredivisie this season.

Alioski did admirably in an auxiliary role, but signing someone who knows the position inside out could help make the Whites an even more balanced outfit.

In other news, Leeds are believed to be interested in signing a Premier League attacker this summer. Find out who it is here.

Nuno Santo could cope with Spurs pressure

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that Nuno Espirito Santo could cope with the pressure at Tottenham.

The Portuguese has been mentioned along with a host of other names as a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who was sacked following Tottenham’s wretched run of form which may well see them miss out on the Champions League.

Prior to Mourinho’s departure, strong reports had claimed that Daniel Levy was ‘keeping tabs’ on Santo, who’s done an exceptional job during his four seasons at Molineux and was praised for his tactics by Mourinho back in 2019.

Santo took Wolves from the Championship to consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League, plus to the Europa League quarter-finals.

The 47-year-old has also managed both Valencia and Porto, taking the latter to the knockout stages of the Champions League, and Windass believes that Santo’s previous experiences would help him with the pressure at Tottenham.

He told Football FanCast:

“I think he could cope with that pressure. He’s doing a fantastic job.

“We were saying the other week about Sean Dyche – I think it’s just a ship too far for people like that, but Nuno could cope.”

White Fern Tiffen gets unexpected chance to play in England

One of the up and comers on the New Zealand women’s cricket scene, Haidee Tiffen, is to play cricket in England over the winter

Lynn McConnell04-May-2001One of the up and comers on the New Zealand women’s cricket scene, Haidee Tiffen, is to play cricket in England over the winter. It has all happened a little quickly for Tiffen who, in her original plans for the winter, was going to be joining CricInfo Women’s World Cup-winning team-mate Paula Flannery coaching cricket at a Swiss finishing school. However, last week Tiffen learned that she couldn’t get a work permit in Switzerland and had to abandon her trip hopes. Flannery was able to get a permit. But the day after receiving that news, Tiffen was called by CLEAR White Ferns coach Mike Shrimpton who asked would she like to play some cricket in England. When she replied she would, he asked, “Can you go next week?”She could and she will leave for Brighton on Wednesday and be playing her first game next Saturday. Not many New Zealand women have played in the England competitions but Tiffen said they are now being encouraged to take up opportunities when they can.Tiffen, an all-rounder, who played some stunning innings in the World Cup, will play and coach for the Brighton club and may also play for Sussex in the Southern League competition. With her attacking strokeplay and consistent medium pace bowling she is developing as a key member of the New Zealand women’s team for the future.England captain Clare Connor plays for the Brighton club.”I’m really looking forward to it. I want to work on my bowling over there. I want to increase my speed and get some more accuracy.”It will be a great opportunity to work on my game and to have a whole season to prepare for the CLEAR White Ferns tour to India which, I think, is going to be from mid-October to mid-November,” she said. The chance is timely for Tiffen who suffered from two burglaries of her Christchurch home within 24 hours recently. She decided to move back home to her parents in Timaru and has been living there.

Spurs suffer Rodgers hammer blow

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt another managerial blow after another mooted target ruled himself out of the running this week…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Daniel Levy’s top two choices to replace Jose Mourinho were RB Leipzig boss Julian Naglesmann and Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers.

The former has now been confirmed as Bayern Munich’s next manager, taking over from Hansi Flick in the summer, and the latter has played down his chances of swapping the Midlands for north London – even despite reports suggesting Spurs would hand him a contract worth in excess of £15m-per-year.

After the Foxes’ win over Crystal Palace in midweek, Rodgers revealed:

“I’m at a world-class training facility, the project we’re in here, we still want to develop, we still have a lot of work to do here. I have a great connection with the players and the board, and we have plans to keep progressing

“While I have that energy and the happiness and I see that challenge continue here, I am very happy to be here. You can’t stop gossip, and you can’t stop speculation. I don’t think about it.”

Hammer blow

Levy will surely be gutted that two of his preferred targets have been crossed off the list, especially as he’s reportedly wanting to make a quick appointment in order to avoid a drawn-out process that hinders the new man’s preparation ahead of next season.

Spurs undoubtedly need to bounce back, having endured a nightmare campaign.

They crashed out of the FA Cup and Europa League early, lost yet another final – being defeated by Man City in the Carabao Cup – and are facing a fight to make the top four, and possibly the top six. It’s that competitive.

Rodgers would have been a very interesting candidate, given the job he’s done at the King Power Stadium and in all fairness, it’s no surprise he’d rather stay as they are set for another spell in the Champions League, whereas the Europa League or worse seems likely for the Lilywhites.

The 48-year-old was lauded by his former player, Jamie Carragher, on Monday Night Football (via the Leicester Mercury) this week.

“I think it goes under the radar with what he’s done at Leicester. It’s phenomenal the job he has done. It really is.”

Similarly, Rodgers’ transformation of Kelechi Iheanacho – one of many examples of impressively developing young stars – has drawn further praise, as Dean Windass told Football FanCast exclusively that it was “unbelievable.”

The Foxes have lost some big names in recent years, namely Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell, Riyad Mahrez and Ngolo Kante, but you’d never know as the former Liverpool man’s recruitment has been second to none.

It’s another setback in Spurs’ quest to quickly replace Mourinho, Levy will be far from pleased with this news.

Charlton: Time to unleash Schwartz?

Charlton Athletic may have extended their unbeaten run to nine matches over the weekend but the truth is, they never looked like scoring against fellow playoff hopefuls Ipswich Town.

Nigel Adkins also kept his record since arriving last month intact but he’ll need to solve the issue if the Addicks are to bolster their promotion ambitions.

Tonight, they head to Plymouth Argyle knowing a victory could see them rise into sixth place above Oxford United, with one game still in hand on them.

The 56-year-old has been without his two top goalscorers Chuks Aneke (12) and Conor Washington (11) in recent outings, and whilst the pair returned to training this week, it’s unlikely we’ll see them in action – or at least starting from the off at Home Park.

With Jayden Stockley misfiring against the Tractor Boys, it could be time to see forgotten January arrival Ronnie Schwartz given a run-out.

He arrived as the Danish Superliga’s top scorer for 2019/20 and signed a two-and-a-half-year deal but has been restricted to only three starts and 390 minutes, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking after clinching his man, Lee Bowyer waxed lyrical about his goalscoring ability to the club’s official website:

“His finishing is very good, I witnessed it first hand in training today. To see him finishing the way he does and know that he is going to improve is a big plus,” claimed the former Addicks boss. “Strikers tend to win you games, once we create chances he is a fox in the box. His work rate is good, his movement is good and he’s very clever. He’s got all the experience, so it’s a great signing.”

Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard also lauded the 31-year-old talisman, claiming that “Ronnie is a proven goalscorer, with a great goalscoring record.”

On Saturday afternoon, Adkins’ men fired 14 attempts at the visitor’s goal, with 50% of those being on target. Stockley, who played the full 90, accounted for three of these but just could not make a successful impact.

Perhaps it’s time for a change to spark life back into the Addicks’ attack; you could even pair Schwartz with Stockley, as the latter is winning a whopping 9.9 aerials won per game and a natural goalscorer like the Dane could thrive playing off him.

Having played just 11 minutes since Bowyer’s departure, Adkins must give the rarely-seen Schwartz an opportunity tonight.

AND in other news, 19x possession lost: THIS wasteful Addicks star let Adkins down massively at the weekend…

Aston Villa: Fans react to Barry and Ramsey footage

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to footage on social media regarding youngsters Louie Barry and Aaron Ramsey.

The pair were in action at Villa Park against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday evening in the FA Youth Cup.

Both Barry and Ramsey helped Villa progress to the fifth round following a 3-0 win, with the latter of the two netting a brace in the second half.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden opened the scoring, with captain Ramsey sealing the victory with two goals in the space of six minutes.

It was Ramsey’s second effort which had plenty of Villa fans talking on social media. Barry picked up the ball and beat a few Brighton players before feeding it into Ramsey’s path, with the midfielder slotting an effort into the far corner.

@academyavfc shared the third goal on Twitter on Wednesday evening, with the clip viewed over 24,000 times as of Friday morning.

This is what these Villa fans had to say, with one describing Barry’s run as ‘Jack-esque’.
