Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp renews his interest in Jeremy Doku

A couple of years back, Liverpool were on Jeremy Doku’s tail but in the end, the transfer didn’t happen and for a while, the rumours have gone quiet on that front. However, it seems that Jurgen Klopp could be back to finish what he started in 2018.

According to a recent update from Het Nieuwsblad (via Sport Witness), the Reds have renewed their interest in the 18-year-old star and could indeed be looking to acquire his services in the ongoing summer transfer window.

However, even if they manage to get him, which at this point is not exactly a guaranteed operation, they would then be willing to loan him back to Anderlecht for the upcoming season.

That way, the youngster could still develop and play regularly while he waits for his real opportunity at Anfield. But the same source states Vincent Kompany’s side are aware of the interest but are not exactly thrilled about it.

Ideally, they don’t want to sell their rough gem but given the current financial situation at the club, every player could indeed be moved on for the right place, Doku included.

But in case of the young star, the report states it would have to be a bid in tens of millions – so not exactly cheap for such a young player.

We don’t know how strong Klopp’s interest is but the Reds are adamant on not spending too much money this summer. Would they be willing to make an exception for the Belgium ace?

Only time will tell.

Verdict

With eight goals and three assists across all competitions in 2019/20, Doku has certainly been on fire. So it doesn’t exactly come as a big surprise to see clubs like Liverpool wanting to take him to the Premier League.

But Anderlecht would also love to keep him. After all, he’s a huge asset for them.

Needless to say, this could complicate the situation for the Reds.

Leeds can ease their Ben White worry by signing Lucas Martinez Quarta

After clinching automatic promotion to the Premier League, attentions at Leeds will surely already be turned towards how they will be strengthening their squad for their top-flight return.

One man whose long-term future at Elland Road is uncertain, is Ben White. The Englishman has been on loan at the club for the entirety of this season, but with the likes of Liverpool also said to be interested in him, it certainly raises a major question as to whether they can get a permanent deal over the line.

It’s been no surprise then that the Whites have been linked with other centre-back targets, with TyC sports show Presion Alta (via Sport Witness) claiming that Marcelo Bielsa has his eyes set on River Plate’s Lucas Martinez Quarta.

Is it Haaland Snr or David Hopkins? Your Leeds knowledge will be put to the test with this quiz…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The £9m-rated ace has been a regular for River, making 96 appearances in total for the club. In his time in Argentina, he has won some of the biggest trophies on offer, including the Copa Libertadores (the South American version of the Champions League).

Described as “highly-rated” by ESPN’s Tim Vickery, Martinez is not the tallest for a typical centre-back, standing at just 5 foot 11. But what he lacks in height, he more than makes up with his exceptional reading of the game and timing of the challenge.

As per Sofascore, he averaged 1.7 interceptions and 1.8 tackles per game in the league, and won a total of 5.7 duels per match too. White on the other hand averaged slightly less tackles in the Championship, with 1.6.

But what Bielsa will surely love about Martinez, is his ability on the ball, and how he can help with playing out from the back. According to Football Whispers, just six other players in Argentina’s top flight made more progressive passes per 90 in the 2019/20 season (13.26).

If Bielsa is keen on ensuring Leeds remain a team that looks to impose themselves on the opposition in the Premier League, then a defensive general like Martinez could be the kind of shrewd signing that takes their defence up to the next level.

Coventry: Mark Robins’ side to land significant windfall if £30m valued striker moves

Former Coventry City striker Callum Wilson could leave Bournemouth this summer and that would see the Sky Blues receive a 10% sell-on figure.

With the Cherries suffering relegation to the Championship from the Premier League last season, a summer sale is expected to to develop at the Vitality stadium.

Wilson, who scored eight goals in 35 Premier League games last term, is said to be one of the players who could be sold to hand the club some much needed transfer funds this summer.

Joining Bournemouth in 2014, the England international formerly played for Coventry, starting his career with the Sky Blues.

Valued at £18m by website Transfermarkt, the 28-year-old has been told that he will not be allowed to leave the former Premier League club for less than £30m.

That news will delight Coventry having installed a sell-on clause on Wilson’s deal to Bournemouth of 10%, meaning they could recoup a sum of £3m if the striker moves on for said asking price.

Coventry LIVE claim that West Ham United and Everton are among the front runners to potentially make a summer move.

Great news for Coventry who would be able to utilise that potential amount on either a new signing or player wages.

Mark Robins has been excellent this summer in terms of bringing in some new faces and Wilson’s potential summer move could see him add to those.

Sunderland: Charlie Methven discusses Jack Rodwell

Sunderland shareholder Charlie Methven has touched on the situation which surrounded the exit of Jack Rodwell from the club.

Joining the Black Cats in 2014 for a transfer fee of £10m, former Everton youngster Rodwell would go on to play a part in the club’s relegation to the Championship in 2017.

Having a handful of appearances for the club in England’s second tier, speculation mounted over the midfielder’s future at the club with a report claiming he asked to leave.

Then manager Chris Coleman touched on Rodwell’s situation, whilst Netflix series ‘Sunderland ’til I Die’ documented the club’s desire to cut ties and decrease their wage bill.

June 2018 eventually saw the 29-year-old’s contract terminated and he has since had spells with Blackburn Rovers and currently, Sheffield United.

Touching on Rodwell’s time at the club, his exit and the midfielder’s career, shareholder Methven spoke on Sasikumar Ramu’s YouTube channel as quoted via Roker Report, saying:

“We spoke to him and we spoke to his representatives and for some reason he decided he didn’t want to be part of Sunderland any more after those conversations.

“I think it was intimated to him in those conversations that probably he wouldn’t enjoy himself, it would be tough.

“I think the problem is that by then his reputation had really deteriorated and had got to the point where a lot of clubs were very wary of a player who had a reputation for not being that enthusiastic about playing football and I think Sunderland ‘Til I Die season one really hurt him in that way but, nonetheless, in the end he did get a club and he went to Blackburn. I think since then he’s gone somewhere else but fundamentally for all of us that have ambitions for English football, it’s been a disappointing career.

“When he came through at Everton, he was very much reckoned to be the next big thing.”

Jack Rodwell’s career has been one of much optimism but with little success.

The midfielder was given quite a rough ride by the Netflix series and whether or not you believe he should have mutually terminated his contract sooner, you have to feel for the midfielder.

Much like the majority of players who joined Sunderland in the Premier League, he would not have expected the club to have such a fall from grace.

These days he is trying to force his way into Chris Wilder’s line-up at Bramall Lane, but he has only managed one FA Cup appearance to date (Transfermarkt).

Suggested Solutions: How Everton can cope with the departure of Andre Gomes

[ad_pod ]

According to Calciomercato, Rome rivals Lazio and Roma are both keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, who is currently on loan with Everton.

It is thought that a deal taking the 25-year-old to Italy won’t be done until the summer, but interest from those Serie A giants could make it very hard for the Toffees to make Gomes’ switch to Goodison Park a permanent one, as the The Guardian have reported is Marco Silva’s desire.

In case Silva doesn’t get his wish though, the Portuguese coach ought to already be putting a plan in place for life without Gomes.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Place faith in Tom Davies

Davies is yet to really cement himself as a regular starter on Merseyside, but to have amassed almost 70 career appearances for the club by the age of 20 is impressive. Clearly, the England under-21 international is a player with huge potential.

He is still somewhat raw, and needs to improve his end product, but if Silva is bold and invests his faith in Davies as the heir to Gomes’ place in the side, then he could be handsomely rewarded for it when the Everton academy product flourishes.

Drop Sigurdsson deeper

Sigurdsson is certainly at his best in the No. 10 position, but as he approaches 30, his experience could perhaps be put to better use in a deeper role.

Gomes is currently tasked with operating as Everton’s deep-lying playmaker, initiating and orchestrating attacking moves from the heart of the pitch. Sigurdsson has the technical ability, composure and creativity to pull this off. However, defensive deficiencies could hold him back.

Steel over silk

With Morgan Schneiderlin far from the required quality to be a trusted regular in Everton’s starting XI, Idrissa Gueye is the only reliable defensive midfielder at Silva’s disposal. However, this often leaves the 29-year-old with far too much to do, as he has to offset the limitations in Gomes’ game.

On occasion, this overburdening of Gueye has led to Everton being overrun in midfield. With that in mind, finding a like-for-like replacement for Gomes may not be the wisest move. Instead, Silva ought to leave the attacking responsibility to his forwards, and focus on adding to some extra steel and resilience to his midfield contingent.

Megan Rapinoe's Last Dance ends in 'sick joke', but USWNT star's legacy is untouchable

The American superstar will remain an icon despite seeing a potential fairy-tale World Cup turn into a nightmare

Women's soccer has never seen anyone quite like Megan Rapinoe. Hell, the world in general hasn't either. For more than a decade, the United States women's national team star has been a lightning rod of attention and a fireball of a player, one that has transcended the game she plays and the country she calls home.

This summer, though, was her curtain call, her last dance. Not from the bright lights, of course, as Rapinoe will no doubt remain part of pop culture long beyond this summer's World Cup Down Under. The USWNT star isn't going away, that's for sure. There isn't anything in the world that could truly silence her.

No, Rapinoe, the celebrity, will continue on. As will Rapinoe, the activist. Rapinoe, the player? Well, her days are numbered. Prior to this summer's event, Rapinoe announced that this World Cup would be her last as she intends to retire at the end of 2023. At age 38, the time has come.

She'll leave the game as one of its most decorated players, with two World Cup triumphs, an Olympic Gold Medal, a World Cup Golden Ball, a World Cup Golden Boot, a Ballon d'Or and a FIFA Best Women's Player award, just to name a few. It didn't end the way she would have liked, as her penalty soared into the sky at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium against Sweden, proving that even a star as big as Rapinoe doesn't often get the chance to write their own ending.

On and off the field, Rapinoe has been a dynamo, a superstar unlike any we've ever seen. From the bright hair to the aura of defiance that has so often been stamped out of a less politically-inclined sports landscape, Rapinoe is a one-of-one.

“I’m exactly what they’re familiar and comfortable with, just packaged up differently," she recently told . "I’m exactly the brash, arrogant athlete that Americans love.” And though her time as that athlete is coming to an end, Rapinoe's legacy on the field is secure as she's solidified her spot as one of the game's most important players.

GettyAn important announcement

Rapinoe didn't want it to linger. She didn't want her team dealing with speculation or questions or uncertainty. So, instead, she just came out and said it. She's retiring.

The announcement came via U.S. Soccer, who released a lengthy statement hailing Rapinoe's accomplishments. World Cup champion, Ballon d'Or winner, LGBTQ+ icon… the list went on and on.

And that's basically what Rapinoe wanted to avoid: dragging this whole process on and on. She knew the questions would come about her future. She knew that, if she didn't answer them, her team-mates would be asked them, too. So, to turn the focus back toward the World Cup, she got ahead of it all.

"Obviously I'm 38 years old, I'm not going to be playing forever and it just always feels weird for me to have something settled and feel at peace and to not answer a question honestly," Rapinoe said. "I kind of wanted to have that for myself.

"I think it allows me to focus a lot more, allows the team to focus a lot more. We don't have to get questions every time, every single game. It's just kind of out there and I can just really enjoy it and focus on trying to win the tournament."

Still, despite Rapinoe's intentions, her team-mates still had plenty to say about her impending exit.

AdvertisementGettyA tearful goodbye

Kelley O'Hara started off pretty strong, to her credit. She was full of praise for Rapinoe and what she's meant to the USWNT program. By the end, though, O'Hara's strength was failing a bit. The voice started cracking a bit as the tears began to flow. From the outside, it seemed that, in that moment, it began to hit her.

"It's hard to put into words, honestly," O'Hara said. "I know that the world sees the Megan Rapinoe that the world sees, but we get to see her up close and personal. The Pinoe that the world sees is an incredible person and human, and that is her up close and personal as well. She brings a sense of humor and lightness, but intensity and empathy.

"She's one of a kind. There's never been anyone like her, and there's probably never gonna be one close to her, so it's sad to think about this being her last, but she's done such incredible things for this team and for the world, so to be able to see the up close and personal Pinoe and be close to that has been really special, and I hope that we can send her out on a high."

That sentiment was largely echoed by Alex Morgan, Rapinoe's team-mate at four World Cups, with this most recent run serving as their final adventure together.

“She’s been an advocate for this team. She’s been a backbone for this team,” said Morgan. “Whether it’s going through the equal pay fight, standing up for marginalized communities, she’s someone who is going to stand up for that when it’s not always a popular opinion…She’s true to herself. That’s from the beginning when I met her until now. She says what she thinks, she means what she says. You have to love her for that.”

Kristie Mewis, meanwhile, did her best before the tournament to convince Rapinoe to stay on for one more cycle. The USWNT might have needed her, after all. "Honestly, she's just such a presence," Mewis said. "That's how I would describe her. She's just such a presence on this team."

Rapinoe isn't staying. This was it, her last World Cup.

GettyRapinoe's reduced role

Given her age, it isn't exactly a secret or surprise, but Rapinoe has slowed down. She's not the dominant force she once was, and there was a while when it looked like she may not even be part of the USWNT in the lead-up to this World Cup.

Rapinoe was one of several World Cup winners excluded by head coach Vlatko Andonovski at parts of this cycle as he looked to facilitate a transition towards youth. All of the old guard was put on notice, even if there was a plan in place to bring them back later on.

In some places, that youth movement never quite came to fruition, as the U.S. still leaned on the likes of Morgan and Julie Ertz. In other places, it worked, with young stars like Sophia Smith, Alyssa Thompson, Trinity Rodman and Naomi Girma all booking their spot in the squad.

Rapinoe, meanwhile, accepted her new place as the USWNT's, as she puts it, "fun grandma". The next generation has started to take control, leaving Rapinoe without the starring role she had for most of her career.

"These little kids are just good," she said on the Snacks podcast of her rising-star team-mates before the tournament. "Everyone’s just good."

Getty'A sick joke'

"I'm like, 'You've got to be f*cking kidding me'," Rapinoe said after her World Cup came to an end. "I'm going to miss a penalty? I mean, honestly, I can't remember the last time I missed."

That was it, her last kick of a ball at the World Cup. With the USWNT duelling with Sweden in a penalty shootout, Rapinoe was among three USWNT stars to miss. She hadn't missed in years, but the Soccer Gods don't care about that sort of statistic.

“This is like a sick joke for me personally," she told after the game. "This is a dark comedy that I missed a penalty. This is the balance to the beautiful side of the game.”

The miss capped a tough World Cup for the USWNT star, who was never quite able to impact the game from her role as a substitute. She couldn't find a goal or an assist in three appearances as the 38-year-old veteran looked just a step off the pace.

But no one could have predicted that cruel, cruel ending. Rapinoe herself laughed as she trotted back to her team-mates, knowing just how out of character it was for her to miss in that moment. It's an unfortunate swansong for a player that could have, and probably should have, had a better goodbye to the game at this top level.

Jesse Lingard earned £120,000 a week at Nottingham Forest to not play – not for the first time, he made the wrong choice

Lingard resurrected his career with West Ham after a sour end at Manchester United, but his move to Nottingham Forest was a huge disappointment

Jesse Lingard's career has been marked by bad decisions and joining Nottingham Forest looks like one of his worst.

Not helped by a series of niggling injuries, he soon fell way down the pecking order for Steve Cooper and only started one match in 2023, the miserable 3-1 defeat at Tottenham when he was hauled off at half-time.

Forest made an expensive bet on Lingard in their bid to ensure they avoided relegation back to the Championship, buying a big-name player with years of experience in the Premier League and who only one year previously had enjoyed an explosive return to form with West Ham.

But ten months later, Lingard departs as a peripheral figure. His Premier League career, despite being only 30, appears to be coming to an end.

Forest, meanwhile, managed to stave of the threat of Premier League relegation without their marquee signing playing even a minor role.

Getty ImagesSolskjaer refuses to let Lingard go and everyone loses

To be fair to Lingard, his current predicament is not all his own making.

After falling out of favour at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 2020/21 season, he resurrected his career on loan at West Ham.

In 16 appearances for David Moyes' side he scored a stunning nine goals and added five assists to help the Hammers finish sixth in the Premier League while achieving their highest-ever points total.

West Ham wanted to make the move permanent but Moyes revealed that Solskjaer was determined to keep the midfielder.

Lingard went back to Old Trafford and scored two goals in the first two months of the season, including the winner away to West Ham which he refused to celebrate. But he made only six Premier League appearances, all as a substitute, before Solskjaer was sacked in November.

He also featured little for interim manager Ralf Rangnick and was not offered a new contract, to the fury of his brother Louie Scott, who blasted the club for not allowing him a final appearance.

Everyone lost out from United's refusal to sell. The Red Devils made no money from Lingard's eventual departure and got barely any use out of him, while West Ham were deprived of a player who they valued highly and the midfielder effectively wasted a season.

AdvertisementGettyChoosing Forest over West Ham

Lingard's departure from Old Trafford as a free agent did give him the opportunity to return to West Ham.

But he surprisingly turned down a reunion with Moyes to head to newly-promoted Forest, who flew him and his entourage to Athens to meet owner Evangelos Marinakis in a bid to seduce him.

Lingard was also offered a lucrative contract by Forest. Initial reports suggested he would earn close to £200,000 a week although other reports claimed the figure was nearer to £120,000 including bonuses.

Either way, he immediately became one of the club's top earners.

West Ham fans also felt he had rejected them in the pursuit of more money, throwing fake bank notes at Lingard on his home debut for Forest against the Hammers.

Lingard saw it differently: "They showed me love, they were very aggressive with their approach," he said after his unveiling. "You love that, you want to see that love and they've showed intent for me to come to the club."

Getty ImagesStruggling to stand out among all the new faces

It is easy to say with hindsight, but West Ham would have been familiar to Lingard and given him some stability, even withstanding their troubles this season and their own battle against relegation.

But Forest was unknown territory for a number of reasons, primarily the fact they made 21 signings in the summer, completely overhauling their squad.

Lingard may have been one of their better-known arrivals, but all the new faces brought a sense of chaos and they won only one of their opening 10 Premier League games, losing seven.

Lingard appeared in 13 of Forest's 15 matches before the season paused for the World Cup, starting 10 games. He was on the winning side three times, against West Ham, Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

He also starred in the Carabao Cup wins over Tottenham and Blackburn either side of the tournament in Qatar, getting a goal and an assist in each game.

GettyBad luck with injuries but enough chances to prove himself

However, he had the misfortune to suffer a thigh injury in Forest's first league match after the World Cup, the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United.

He only played after that, starting the 3-1 defeat at Tottenham and coming off the bench in the 4-0 drubbing at West Ham, whose fans booed him when he was brought on.

Most recently, Lingard was an unused substitute against Everton and in a 2-0 surrender at Aston Villa.

He may have been unlucky with the injuries, but he has had more than enough opportunities to prove himself and has not done so.

In 17 Premier League appearances he registered no goals and assists and has averaged 0.2 shots on target per match – with his last action in a Forest shirt a humiliating two-minute cameo against Man Utd.

Barcelona's 16-game winning streak snapped! Women's Champions League winners & losers as Bayern get revenge

The Germans were 2-0 up after just 10 minutes against the Catalans, while there were plenty of other big results on matchday four…

A win over Roma meant former champions Wolfsburg became the first team to secure their place in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals this week – and the race to join them in the last eight certainly heated up across matchday four.

The two groups of death continue to live up to the billing, with it likely we'll have winner-takes-all games between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, and Juventus and reigning champions Lyon later this month.

With Bayern Munich also gaining emphatic revenge on Barcelona, beating them 3-1 after a 3-0 reverse at Camp Nou last month, this round of fixtures had plenty of fireworks.

So, who caught the eye this week and who stumbled? GOAL runs the rule over the latest set of games…

GettyWINNER: Alexander Straus

After Barcelona dismantled Bayern Munich's strong defence at Camp Nou two weeks ago, some wrote off the German side at the Allianz on Wednesday.

But huge credit has to go to head coach Alexander Straus for how he learned from that defeat and prepared his players for the rematch – as well as those on the pitch for executing his plan to a tee.

Within 10 minutes, Bayern were 2-0 up against a team that had only conceded five goals in their previous 14 outings. After a high energy start from the hosts, Barca did get a foothold in the game midway through the first half, but they couldn't break Bayern down and would fall further behind when Lea Schuller made it 3-0 on the hour.

Geyse would pull one back for the Catalans but it was a mere consolation. Bayern are the first team to beat Barca this season – the first team to beat them since Lyon in last season's UWCL final, in fact – and they were worthy winners.

There have been promising signs since Straus came in this past summer, but this was the biggest indicator yet that they are onto something good with a coach of high quality who complements a very talented squad and an ambitious football club.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Barcelona

In terms of Barcelona's bid to finish top of their UWCL group, defeat to Bayern on Wednesday wasn't catastrophic, as they still have the superior head-to-head record on goal difference, but that doesn't mean the result wasn't concerning.

What made it slightly more worrying was the difficult time Barca had at home to Real Sociedad just a few days earlier, in the league.

La Real harried Barca with high intensity, particularly in the first half, and went 1-0 up. Fortunately for the Catalans, they'd fight back to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Marta Torrejon and a late Lucy Bronze header. The equaliser wasn't without controversy, though, with Torrejon appearing to be offside.

Barca are one of the best teams in the world right now but there are clever coaches out there who are starting to figure out ways to trouble them.

Indeed, the tactics employed by both Sociedad and Bayern this past week will be have been noted across Spain and the continent as something of a blueprint on how to put Barca in trouble.

But we've said that before and Barca still went on long unbeaten runs. They will hope that is the case again and these last two games simply serve as a wake-up call. They know they can be much better and they will need to be.

GettyWINNER: Vivianne Miedema

Earlier this season, Vivianne Miedema did something that not many players often do. She asked for a break.

The Dutch international contracted Covid-19 during the Euros and really struggled with it. Being in the middle of a major tournament, there wasn't much time to recover when she tested negative and then along came the new season, very soon after England triumphed in the final over Germany.

“I got through the beginning of the season almost on autopilot," she told reporters ahead of Wednesday's game with Juventus. "I missed the October national team period through illness again and since then I spoke with Jonas [Eidevall, Arsenal head coach] about getting some rest and managing my minutes.

“I just didn’t feel mentally and physically ready to play and you could see it in the way I was playing. I wasn’t enjoying my football in that moment and when you stop enjoying it and you don’t want to go into training in the morning, you need to take a break."

Since her return, Miedema looks back to her best. She scored the winner against Juve in midweek, after netting the only goal of the game at the weekend against Everton and the equaliser against the Italian side in Turin two weeks ago.

"I hope that by me taking the time off, it will have done good for a couple of players," the forward said. "[I hope] they are feeling confident enough to actually ask for that break and don't feel ashamed for needing it."

She's certainly justifying hers right now and proving what good some time off can do.

GettyLOSER: Joe Montemurro

Bittersweet – that's how Joe Montemurro, the Juventus head coach who spent four years in charge of Arsenal before his move to Italy, described the prospect of being in the away dugout at the Emirates on Wednesday.

The Gunners' women's team never played at the stadium in a competitive fixture while he was in charge, with him emphasising that "the timing wasn't right" back then.

This was his first experience doing so, then, and it was as the opposing coach. If that wasn't strange enough, the result made what he dubbed a "surreal" night even tougher to process.

Arsenal's 1-0 win, coupled with victory for reigning champions Lyon against Zurich the same night, saw Juve drop to third in this ultra-competitive group. They need to beat Zurich at home next week and then get a result against the French giants the week after if they want to reach the knockouts.

It's not impossible, but it's tough.

A boyhood Arsenal fan, coaching such a big game at the Emirates is a chance Montemurro will have craved for some time. It will go down as a special moment on a personal level, there's no doubt, but he certainly will have wished it could've been even better.
