Kevin Pietersen has been omitted from England’s one-day squads for their tour of New Zealand next year as England’s selectors have accepted that he needs to rest to survive a heavy international schedule.Formal rest periods have become ever more prevalent in England cricket, but Pietersen’s absence from the New Zealand squads as England look to manage his workload is nevertheless a notable concession to the player so soon after his lengthy dispute with the England hierarchy.Geoff Miller, England’s national selector, said: “There are a number of players who we have decided not to select for parts of the competitive programme this winter as we look to manage their workloads effectively while ensuring we remain competitive across all formats. We feel this is the best way of keeping players as physically and mentally fresh as possible during a demanding 2013 and beyond.”Kevin Pietersen will miss the limited overs tour of New Zealand with Graeme Swann missing the T20 leg of the tour. This approach also provides an opportunity for talented young players to gain more international experience which will be important for their development and the development of England sides in the future.”Pietersen is expected to play in the Test series in March before heading to India for the IPL ahead of the English season.Since his much-publicised “reintegration” into the England set-up Pietersen has missed two Twenty20 series despite being one of the world’s most outstanding players in this format. He was also rested for the two matches against India, but England still drew the series 1-1 after winning in Mumbai and registered their highest winning total in Twenty20 cricket in the process.England’s introduction of a job share in their coaching set-up, with Andy Flower running the Test squad and Ashley Giles taking charge of the the ODI and Twenty20 sides in the New Year, supervised by Flower as overall team director, is another recognition of cricket’s demanding calendar.England have played 44 matches in all formats this year and the ECB has now accepted that for players and management rest periods are essential if they are to maintain hunger, fitness and a stable family life.England’s T20 squad in New Zealand shows two changes from the original India party with Stuart Broad, recovered from a heel injury, returning to captain the side and Steven Finn also called up after back trouble. Jonny Bairstow, who left the T20 series against India early for personal reasons, is also named. England play two warm-up fixtures against a New Zealand XI in preparation for a three-match series starting on February 9 in Auckland. For the three match ODI series, which begins on February 17 in Hamilton, Swann, James Anderson and Jonathan Trott return to the side after being rested for the ODI tour of India. As well as announcing squads for all three formats in New Zealand, England’s selectors also put Joe Root in charge of the England Lions one-day tour of Australia in February, barely a week after his mentor, the former England captain Michael Vaughan, had identified him as a future England captain.Root, who made his England Test debut earlier this month against India, will captain a Lions side in five one-day matches against Australia A which includes 12 members of the 2012 England Performance who have recently returned from India.Reece Topley, Essex’s left-arm quick bowler, has an opportunity to win his first England Lions cap alongside Gary Ballance, Varun Chopra, Ben Foakes, Toby Roland-Jones and Chris Wright.Twenty20 squad: Stuart Broad (capt), Jonny Bairstow, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Jos Buttler, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Michael Lumb, Stuart Meaker, Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, James Tredwell, Luke Wright.ODI squad: Alastair Cook (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Craig Kieswetter, Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Jonathan Trott.Lions squad: Joe Root, Gary Balance, Scott Borthwick, Danny Briggs, Varun Chopra, Matthew Coles, Ben Foakes, Alex Hales, James Harris, Simon Kerrigan, Toby Roland-Jones, Ben Stokes, James Taylor, Reece Topley, James Vince, Chris Wright. This article was updated on December 23 at 6.25pm after the ECB advised that James Vince had been omitted from the Lions squad because of an administrative error.

England will begin the defence of their Women’s World Cup title against Sri Lanka on February 2 at the Wankhede Stadium. The hosts, India, will play on the opening day of the tournament against West Indies at the same venue and the final will be held at the Cricket Club of India ground on February 17.The eight teams that have qualified have been split into two groups of four and the initial stage of the tournament will see one team eliminated from each group with the remaining sides progressing to the Super Six phase. As with the men’s World Twenty20, the teams will retain their seedings from the group stage regardless of the position they finish – so, for example, if England finish third in their group they will still progress as A1.England, Australia, New Zealand and India qualified for the tournament after finishing as the top four in the 2009 competition and will be joined in Mumbai by West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa. West Indies are one of the rapidly improving sides in the women’s game and reached the semi-finals of the recent World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.A total of 25 matches will be played across five venues in Mumbai – Wankhede Stadium, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Cricket Club of India (CCI), Middle Income Group Club Ground (MIG) and DY Patil Stadium. Ten of the matches will be broadcast live.Alan Isaac, the ICC president, said: “This will be the third time that India has staged the Women’s World Cup but this could be by far the most significant. I feel that we are on the verge of a massive sea change in the women’s game and where better for that to take place than in the great city of Mumbai.”Last month the World Cup trophy was detained at Mumbai airport because officials said it had not been brought into India under the correct procedure. For a full fixture list click here

Colvin helps cricket expand boundaries

Holly Colvin spent a fortnight in Kenya with the charity Cricket Without Boundaries, helping to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS through cricket

Luke Sellers30-Nov-2012

Holly Colvin said the opportunity to coach Kenyan children put the World T20 final defeat into perspective•Cricket without Boundaries

After the heartbreak of losing the Women’s World Twenty20 final to Australia you could forgive England spinner Holly Colvin for wanting to take some time away from the sport. But less than week after the four-run defeat in Colombo, Colvin packed her bags and headed off to Kenya to take on a very different kind of cricketing challenge.Colvin took two wickets before England Women failed to chase 143 against Australia but took her mind off the disappointment by joining a team of six other volunteers from all walks of life – including this journalist, a college student and a financial analyst – for a two-week trip with Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB), a UK charity using cricket to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.During an emotional and inspiring fortnight 56 new coaches were trained and more than 3,000 children took part in sessions from inner-city orphanages to schools in remote areas accessible only by four-wheel drive.”There were a lot of tears shed after the World T20 final defeat but coming to Kenya was the perfect distraction. It gave everything perspective and reminded me that it is only a game,” Colvin said. “Kenya was an incredible, humbling experience and one I will never forget. The people, the atmosphere, and seeing how much the children loved it was absolutely amazing.”Thousands of children were given their first taste of cricket in Nakuru, Kenya’s fourth-largest city, and the rural area of Laikipia – including 500 in one particularly epic session.”I think cricket can be a huge tool in educating people about HIV/AIDS,” Colvin said. “If you sit kids down and talk to them about it in a classroom it can go in one ear and out of the other. But to do it through cricket it really sticks in their minds.”CWB was founded in 2005 and first embarked on a seven-month trip coaching from Cairo to Cape Town. The charity works in partnership with the ICC’s Think Wise partnership, which has been run in collaboration with UNAIDS and UNICEF since 2003, who will use World Aids Day on December 1 to raise awareness around the cricketing world with players wearing red ribbons.CWB has delivered 37 projects in seven different African countries. Together with HIV/AIDS awareness, the project aims to empower women and promote equal opportunities, starting with boys and girls playing alongside each other. This brought Colvin one of her highlights of the trip, during the final of the schools festival in Nakuru.”This young girl called Faith clean bowled a boy twice her size and all her team-mates came rushing up to her,” Colvin said. “She wasn’t just a girl making up the team she was an integral part of it. She was respected by the boys in the team and they all just looked like they were in it together.”It reminded me of when I first started playing cricket. I was just one of the boys and treated like that, as equal. It was incredible to see that happen out in Kenya and I really think it would tackle some of the problems there.”CWB has also played a key role in supporting Cricket Kenya’s efforts to develop the game at grass roots level and has worked alongside ex-internationals Peter Ongondo and David Asiji. The charity may also have inspired a future Kenyan star. Quinta Aoko had never played cricket before CWB’s trip in 2011, but made her debut for the full women’s team earlier this year aged just 15.With the continuing commitment of volunteers, CWB wants to continue to inspire children to take up the sport and gain vital education of a disease that an estimated 1.5 million live with in Kenya alone. The charity is committed to delivering projects in at least five African countries on a twice-yearly basis and in 2013, they will be returning to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana and Cameroon. To find out more about the charity, including how to volunteer, visit www.cricketwithoutboundaries.com.

Last man secures last-ball Dutch win

Netherlands secured a tense one-wicket victory over Bangladesh to tie the T20I series 1-1

Netherlands snatched a tense one-wicket victory over Bangladesh to tie the T20I series 1-1, as No. 11 Ahsan Malik hit the last ball of the match – and the first delivery he had faced – for four.Ahsan Malik came to the wicket with Netherlands needing two for victory, after Abdur Razzak had removed Timm van der Gugten, who had just hit six, with the penultimate ball. The tailender coolly cut Razzak behind point to condemn Bangladesh to a second defeat to an Associate nation in the last three days.Opener Michael Swart had guided the Netherlands chase but when he fell for 61 from 49 balls, to leave his side 112 for 7, still 17 short of victory with 13 balls to go, it looked like the hosts would fail. Two runs and three balls later they were eight down and come the final over, ten runs were still required. Razzak had only conceded 11 from his previous three but van der Gugten’s blow over mid-off was decisive, even though he fell lbw to the next delivery.Bangladesh succumbed despite winning the toss and choosing to bat, with Tamim Iqbal scoring his second successive T20 international fifty. Mahmudullah was one of the few batsmen to score fluently, adding 41 from 31 balls in a 62-run partnership with Tamim, but Ziaur Rahman was the only other Bangladeshi to reach double figures.Van der Gugten preceded his intervention with the bat by taking three wickets, as Bangladesh lost their last five batsmen for eight runs off ten balls. Swart and Mudassar Bukhari also claimed two wickets apiece.Though Bangladesh took wickets at regular intervals and none of the bowlers conceded more than seven runs an over, Netherlands judged their chase to perfection … just.

NO FLAMENGO, LUCAS PAQUETÁ É QUEM LIDERA AS ESTATÍSTICAS

Leandro Damião (18, Internacional) e Gilberto (14, Bahia) completam o Top-5.
