'We have to be at our best' – Clarke

Michael Clarke passed his first examination as Australia’s captain by leading the side to a series victory in Sri Lanka, but he knows repeating that success in South Africa will be a major challenge

A tough test awaits Michael Clarke in South Africa•AFP

Michael Clarke passed his first examination as Australia’s captain by leading the side to a series victory in Sri Lanka, but he knows repeating that success in South Africa will be a major challenge. Clarke flew out of Sydney on Friday to join the squad ahead of the three ODIs and two Tests, after Cameron White’s Twenty20 side kicked off the trip with a victory in Cape Town on Thursday. And while that was an encouraging start, it’s the Test matches that Australia really need to win as they attempt to climb back up the Test rankings, having risen from fifth to fourth following the Sri Lankan trip. Clarke’s men will take comfort from their success in South Africa in 2008-09, when they took the series 2-1 under Ricky Ponting. Beating the second-ranked South Africans again would be a wonderful achievement for a developing side.”South Africa are a very tough team in any form of the game – especially in their own backyard, so [a win] will be a great achievement,” Clarke told reporters in Sydney. “We have to be at our best against South Africa, individually players know that and as a team we’ve got to be flying, with the bat, with the ball and in the field. We have to be as good as we can possibly be to win this one-day series and hopefully win the Test series as well.”The Test squad has not yet been named but the offspinner Nathan Lyon is expected to play a key role during the series after making a positive start to his international career in Sri Lanka, where he took five wickets on debut in the first innings in Galle. Clarke believes Lyon – who has played only eight first-class games – will be an important man over the coming months as Australia face South Africa, New Zealand and India in Test series, but he also stressed the need to manage his workload.”He’s a wonderful talent, as I thought before I went to Sri Lanka, and having seen him bowl, he’s got beautiful shape out of his hand, he’s got great natural variation, great change of pace,” Clarke said. “He’s young and inexperienced, though, and it’s going to take some time and we have to look after him now and build him into the series in South Africa. Hopefully he can play a part in the practice game but with a big summer ahead in Australia … it’s about monitoring him.”His body got tired at the back end of that Sri Lanka series with three back-to-back Test matches plus a tour game. We have to keep an eye on that, but he’s a huge talent and hopefully he will play a huge part for Australian cricket.”And while Australia are coming off a busy period, with some players heading to the Champions League T20 after the Sri Lankan tour, South Africa will need to shed their rust after a long lay-off, having played no Tests since January. Clarke said South Africa’s long stretch without cricket, as well as a finger injury to AB de Villiers, would help Australia, but he believed they would begin to find their touch during the ODIs, which start in Centurion on Wednesday.”The T20s and one-dayers will help them get momentum as a team, even though there will be some changes for the Test team,” he said. “I think AB de Villiers is a big loss for them as well with his injury. I think we should be high on confidence after winning in Sri Lanka but saying that, they are playing in their own backyard. It will be a great challenge for us. They are a wonderful team and they are always hard to beat.”

Australia seek coach before home summer

Australia could realistically have a permanent head coach before the start of the home summer, according to Cricket Australia’s new general manager of team performance, Pat Howard

Australia could realistically have a permanent head coach before the start of the home summer, according to Cricket Australia’s new general manager of team performance, Pat Howard. The first Test against New Zealand begins on December 1, just a week after the Test squad returns home from South Africa, where Troy Cooley has been the acting head coach.Howard started his new role this week and immediately flew to Cape Town to meet the Australian squad, including the fielding mentor Steve Rixon and the assistant coach Justin Langer, who are both likely to be candidates for the head coach position. Rixon is considered a front-runner due to his strong relationship with captain Michael Clarke. The new position is an expanded role compared to the job that was occupied by Tim Nielsen. Following the appointment of Howard and the national selection manager John Inverarity, it is the one remaining major role to be filled. The new coach will report to Howard, who said he was optimistic about finding a candidate before the New Zealand series.”The process is well and truly in train,” Howard said. “It is realistic yes, it is better than hopeful, but we have to get it done and as part of the process is to make sure not only that they are appointed but that they hit the ground running so part of the process is thoughts of how are we going to able to do this and move it forward.”But the reality is there are always negotiations, contract negotiations, current employment status. When I left my job I had two months’ notice but fortunately my previous employer were good and let me go early. There’s a whole heap of conditions but to know where we are going for the New Zealand Test is the absolute ideal.”In one of his previous jobs, as high-performance chief with the Australian Rugby Union, Howard was central in the appointment of several coaches including Robbie Deans, the current Wallabies mentor. Cricket Australia have launched a global search for Nielsen’s replacement and Howard said it was important to keep an open mind.”Often the trap in sports is names come to mind first,” he said. “But any time you go and recruit in a normal sense and a corporate sense and a world sense, you think what are the skills I need in this situation and let’s get those right first. So that’s been the start of the process, getting that right and trying to steer people away from names, know what you want then start dealing with the recruitment process.”Head coaching experience matters and I mean that in terms of there’s assistants and there’s heads … success, demonstrated success and the ability to consider where Australia is today and where we want to go to. Those factors have all got to be weighed up.”If Australia want someone with previous head coaching experience, that would enhance the prospects of Rixon, who led New Zealand during a successful period and also won titles during his time in charge of New South Wales. He has also spent time in charge of Surrey and has been an assistant to Stephen Fleming at the Chennai Super Kings. The other major positions that need filling are the two part-time selector roles, which Howard said Inverarity would have a say in determining. For the time being, Andrew Hilditch’s panel remains in a standby capacity – Hilditch is the selector on duty in South Africa – but Inverarity is expected to choose his first squad for the Test series against New Zealand.”John’s heavily involved in the process,” Howard said of picking the other two selectors. “There are some areas the Argus review talks about and so we can say, John, here are some frameworks here are some ideas. There are a long list of candidates to get through.”

O'Keefe chases higher honours via Twenty20

Steve O’Keefe is intent on pressing his case for Australian limited overs and Test match consideration during the tourists’ two Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka

Australia’s most statistically accomplished spin bowler, Steve O’Keefe, is intent on pressing his case for limited overs and Test match consideration during the tourists’ two Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka. In 14 first-class matches, O’Keefe has winkled out 52 wickets at 24.05, yet has been ignored by the national selectors for all but the briefest of formats, in which he took 3-29 on his debut against Pakistan last year. The selection of Nathan Lyon and Michael Beer has been considered by some to be a slight on O’Keefe, but he preferred to view it as a sign that in selection terms, anything was now possible.”Definitely. I think every time you play, it’s a bit of an audition, isn’t it?,” O’Keefe told in Colombo. “Sometimes, if you do well in any sort of form for Australia, it can translate in all sorts of forms so, any time you get to wear [Australian colours], you’re on show.”O’Keefe has watched Lyon bowl, and said the South Australian-based off spinner had all the attributes of a classical slow bowler.”He’s a beautiful bowler when you watch him go,” O’Keefe said. “He gets it up and over and one of the best natural spinners I’ve seen around in the country for a long time. He’s got a good head on his shoulders which I think will serve him in good stead if he gets his opportunity to play.”While O’Keefe’s time in Sri Lanka will be short, the time spent training ahead of Saturday’s first T20 match against the Sri Lankans will be enthusiastically undertaken by one of the more personable cricketers in Australia.”It’s changing times that you come away and you’re here for two weeks for these games that go for three hours but, in saying that, the intensity of training is quite tough,” O’Keefe said. “The training that we did today for fielding, it doesn’t get much tougher and I think you can definitely take your skills up a notch by working around these guys.”There’s a lot of benefits besides the two games. You get to surround yourself with the best players in the world and play up to their level. It’s a great forum to showcase your skills.”

“(i) Esclarecimentos a serem feitos pelo ex-presidente da Diretoria Administrativa, Sr. Eurico Angelo de Oliveira Miranda, acerca da destinação ou a natureza do pagamento referente aos valores contemplados na Nota Explicativa 25, com a apresentação da respectiva documentação comprobatória, se houver;

Cosker five-wicket haul in vain

Glamorgan spinner Dean Cosker claimed 5 for 48 but Essex held on for a draw on the final day of their County Championship Division Two clash at Cardiff

Scorecard
Glamorgan spinner Dean Cosker claimed 5 for 48 but Essex held on for a draw on the final day of their County Championship Division Two clash at Cardiff.Glamorgan had set Essex a massive 333 to win in 53 overs but the visitors found themselves reduced to 104 for 6 with Cosker and Robert Croft causing the damage. Essex were indebted to the seventh-wicket partnership of Graham Napier and Tim Phillips who batted out the remaining 21 overs to help their side finish on 143 for 6.Glamorgan took 10 points from the game to Essex’s eight. Glamorgan had eventually declared on 296 for 5 in mid-afternoon but there had been plenty of audible complaints among supporters that captain Alviro Petersen had delayed his declaration too long, leaving Essex a stiff run rate of 6.4.Openers Tom Westley and Billy Godleman made a steady start to the Essex run chase as they reached 54 without loss before spinners Cosker and Croft claimed three wickets in 13 balls just before tea.The dismissal of Westley (22) started the collapse when he was caught at slip off Cosker, before Croft struck with his third delivery as Godleman (33) departed lbw. In the next over Owais Shah drove Cosker straight for six before he also departed leg before for seven. After tea Essex captain James Foster (10) turned one to leg slip off Cosker, who completed his five-wicket haul by removing Jaik Mickleburgh (10) and Adam Wheater (11). Cosker took his five wickets for 22 runs in 59 balls, although his efforts were not enough to see Glamorgan to victory. At the start of the final day the hosts had resumed on 126 for 1 – an overall lead of 162 – but they suffered something of a collapse losing four wickets in 13 overs. David Masters created much of the damage in a burst of three for five in only 29 balls. In the third over of the day Will Bragg went lbw to Maurice Chambers having failed to add to his overnight total of 59. Michael Powell struck successive fours off Masters, who gained his revenge by trapping the Glamorgan right-hander in front for 11.Glamorgan then found themselves 174 for 5 with Masters breaking through twice more. First he had Stewart Walters well caught at slip by Phillips for six and then had Petersen (77) leg before. But either side of lunch Mark Wallace and Jim Allenby put on 119 for the sixth wicket as Glamorgan built towards a declaration. When Wallace was out Glamorgan were on 293 for 6 – an lead of 329 – but still the declaration from Petersen did not come until Graham Wagg (one) was out in the next over.

Henderson takes four as Essex slump

Bottom-of-the-table Leicestershire gained the upper hand on the opening day of their County Championship Division Two battle against Essex at Southend

George Dobell at Southend-on-Sea27-Jul-2011
ScorecardWhatever image you may have of a cricket ‘festival’ it seems safe to assume that, unless you’ve visited Southgate, Garon Park is unlikely to fit the stereotype. This is not a ground for the romantic. It lacks the splendour of Cheltenham, the beauty of Tunbridge Wells or the charm of Arundel.Indeed, the harsh would even describe it as habitually windswept, remarkably barren and boasting all the charm of an industrial estate. The presence of a Samaritans marquee amid the beer tents and temporary seating underlined the somewhat depressing atmosphere. At most grounds such a marquee would seem incongruous; at times here it felt like a necessity.Yet this ‘festival’ is still a worthy endeavour. Essex reckon that as many as 500 of their members – that’s 10% of the total number – might not renew unless they played in this corner of the county, while they also hope that, by taking first-class cricket to people who might otherwise not see it, that they might nurture new followers. They are, after all Essex County Cricket Club; not Chelmsford Town.By the end of the first day, however, several Essex players could be forgiven for requiring the services of that Samaritans tent. Put into bat on a pitch that started just a little damp, they surrendered their last nine wickets for 87 runs to subside to their second lowest total of the Championship season. As they’re up against the bottom side in Division Two, it suggested that any lingering hopes they retain of promotion are diminishing by the day.Yes, conditions did aid spinner and seamer alike. But, as Pitch Liaison Officer John Jameson confirmed, there was nothing really untoward about the surface. Several of Essex’s batsmen simply lacked the requisite application. The one major exception to that rule was Ravi Bopara. Bopara, captain of Essex for the first time in the Championship due to an ankle injury to James Foster, battled hard for two-and-a-quarter hours only to be undone by a horrid ball that kept low; the only truly unplayable delivery of the day. Bopara’s determination deserved to be repaid with better fortune.Leicestershire also bowled vey well. Nathan Buck, probing an excellent line and nipping the ball around off the seam, just shaded Wayne White as the pick of the seamers, while left-arm spinner Claude Henderson utilised the helpful conditions expertly to claim his best figures for a year. The way he lured the previously elegant Shah, who was the one man to make batting appear straightforward, into a forward prod at one that turned and took the edge was masterful. Ryan ten Doeschate, who was out first ball and now averages only nine in the Championship season, was also lured to his demise in similar fashion. Not everyone made it so difficult. Jaik Mickleburgh, mistaking a positive approach for a reckless approach, skied a catch to mid-off as he attempted to skip down the wicket and thrash Henderson for six, while Maurice Chambers’ attempted slog-sweep against the spin wassimply hideous. It ended up in the hands of extra-cover.In between times, Tom Westley was beaten by a good one that nipped back, Billy Godleman and Adam Wheater missed expansive drives, before David Masters and Tom Craddock were beaten by balls that nipped back. Craddock’s real test was about to begin, however. Preferred to the more experienced Tim Phillips, who has endured a disappointing season in first-class cricket, Craddock is Essex’s only specialist spinner in this game and, on a pitch already offering a surprising amount of turn, will surely need to play a major role if his side is to clamberback into the game.He bowled some fine deliveries and should have had at least one wicket. But, generally, he lacked the consistency to build pressure upon the batsmen and paled by comparison to Henderson. Perhaps that’s not surprising. Henderson is 39 years old, after all, and was playing international cricket when 22-year-old Craddock was still at primary school. Craddock also had the disadvantage of bowling at batsmen who were prepared to graft a little harder for their runs.Besides, had Essex accepted their chances in the field, things would look less bleak. As it was, however, they reprieved James Taylor twice, once off Craddock when the batsman had just 9 and once, from the final delivery of the day, when he had 13. On the first occasion, Shah was unable to cling on to an outside edge at slip – possibly he was hindered by the ball coming off the wicket-keeper’s pads or gloves – while Wheater, who had earlier taken an outstanding diving catch to dismiss Will Jefferson off the inside edge – was unable to cling on to a similar chance off Masters just before stumps.Taylor, captain of Leicestershire for the first time in the Championship after Andrew McDonald was forced to return to Australia for family reasons, will be aiming to make Essex pay on day two.

Kieswetter and Woakes miss Lions match

Craig Kieswetter and Chris Woakes have been ruled out of contention for the England Lions match against Sri Lanka at Derby next week

Craig Kieswetter and Chris Woakes have been ruled out of contention for the England Lions match against Sri Lanka at Derby next week. Woakes is suffering from sore shins after a heavy early-season workload for Warwickshire, while Kieswetter has picked up a thigh strain following his unbeaten hundred in the CB40 against Gloucestershire. Both players would have been likely to feature for the Lions, who provide Sri Lanka with their last warm-up match before the first Test against England, and the pair are tipped to feature in England’s one-day plans during the summer. “Grade 2 tear in my quad,” Kieswetter posted on Twitter. “Out of action for a bit. Missing Lions game against Sri Lanka!”Kieswetter is making a strong case for an ODI recall to partner new captain Alastair Cook at the top of the order against Sri Lanka. He has scored two hundreds and an unbeaten 95 in the CB40 campaign alongside 294 runs at 42 in the Championship.Woakes, meanwhile, made his international debut in the Twenty20s against Australia in January where he hit the winning runs in Adelaide then followed that with 6 for 49 in a one-day international at Brisbane. So far this season he has collected 24 Championship wickets at 18.54 and scored 262 runs with a best of 129.Woakes will undergo scans to see whether he is suffering the early stages of shin splints having bowled 144 Championship overs in four matches, comfortably the most of the Warwickshire attack.
