O Internacional é gigante e me deu todas as oportunidades desde a base.

Will green Delhi effect turnaround?

ESPNCricinfo previews the game between Punjab and Delhi

The Preview by Sriram Veera22-Apr-2011Match factsSaturday, April 23, Delhi
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Will there be any miraculous turnaround for Irfan Pathan?•AFP

Big picture’Juice it up baby!’ is the new mantra for the battle-weary Delhi Daredevils, sitting glumly at the bottom of the cesspool. “We have prepared a green wicket unique to Twenty20 cricket. Never before will a Twenty20 be played on such a track with so much grass on it,” the Feroz Shah Kotla curator said. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Delhi is well and truly in the red zone. The light at the end of the tunnel is green. Or so they hope. It makes sense, though. They brought seven seamers (seven!) in the auction and have been slowly killing them on a dull sluggish track. So why not try out a green track and see what happens? Right at the end of the Delhi daredevils’ official team anthem video, there is this scene where Virender Sehwag gives the thumbs down to his team-mates’ efforts and shows them how to bat . It’s now time to start getting it right on the field.Meanwhile the story of Punjab is showing signs of being a blockbuster just as their Bollywood-inspired official site hoped it would. The site features Adam Gilchrist in a mega close-up, as the hero, and has the names of rest of the ‘supporting cast’. Gilchrist was their only star before the campaign but slowly new names are claiming their ticket to fame. Yet, if you check the batting and bowling records of the tournament, only two Punjab players check into the top ten. That once unknown Indian Paul-who? is right at the top of the batting chart and Praveen Kumar is at the No. 9 on the wicket-takers’ list. Punjab’s rise has been as a unit; someone or other has seized the big moments in a game and delivered. Will they continue to surprise or will there be a twist in the tale?Team talkThe green, green grass means Delhi will pack its team with seamers though one will have to wait and see if the curator delivers on his promise of a devilish pitch. Will Punjab consider playing David Hussey or stick to the winning combination from the last game?Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector. In the spotlightIrfan Pathan’s past dogs him like a shadow. The questions from the fans are plenty: Oh where is that inswing? Oh where is that pace? What is this gentle dibbly-dobbly stuff? Will we ever get to see the old Irfan? The expectations of him are always huge and the young man has struggled to shoulder that burden. The bowling has been listless, the batting hasn’t come on and in many ways, he has reflected Delhi’s sad reality. Will there be a miraculous turnaround or will he just slither away into anonymity?Dinesh Karthik has had a quiet tournament so far as the top order has been doing the job. In the previous IPL editions, he was a strong performer for Delhi in the middle order and if the law of averages catches up with the top order, Karthik is well-equipped to step up to the plate. He has the shots and while he hasn’t always shown maturity in shot selection, he has the tenacity and the skill to do well on tough pitches.Prime numbers Piyush Chawla has five ducks in all the editions of the IPL and is just one duck behind the record-holder, Shane Warne. His team-mate Praveen Kumar too is in the race, with four ducks.Shaun Marsh and Adam Gilchrist have nine IPL fifties though Jacques Kallis is at the top of the table with 13.The chatter”Three [wins] in a row after a poor start. It has been a bit of a stop-start tournament, seems like the tournament is just beginning. Paul backed himself, and Shaun was brilliant.”
“Sehwag brings a lot to the table. You learn a lot when you discuss batting with him. When he is around, there is a sense of positively around. He can encourage people when the chips are down.”

Can Deccan breach the Chennai fortress?

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers in Chennai

The Preview by Sriram Veera30-Apr-2011Match factsSunday, May 1 Chennai
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)With nine wickets to his credit, Amit Mishra is third behind Iqbal Abdulla (10) and Shane Warne (10) in the list of spinners•Indian Premier League

Big pictureThey win one and they lose one but Deccan have slowly picked themselves off the bottom and are beginning to inch up in the points table. They were almost a two-man bowling attack, with only Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra contributing in the first half of the tournament, but suddenly, from nowhere, Ishant Sharma announced himself in some style in their last game. Admittedly, the pitch was helpful but Deccan will hope he will rouse himself to greater deeds from here on.As far as their batting is concerned, Deccan have depended heavily on Kumar Sangakkara. Their domestic batsmen have failed, their big signings like Cameron White, Daniel Christian and JP Duminy haven’t quite managed to live up to their billing yet. So, it’s no surprise that they haven’t been consistent so far.Deccan’s opponents Chennai Super Kings have lost three games but it took some exceptional performances, and iffy conditions, to beat them. Paul Valthaty dropped his cloak of anonymity one day, Harbhajan Singh picked his maidenTwenty20 five-for on another day, and rain played a big part in the game they lost to Kochi. They have won all their home games and won their first away game in the last encounter against Pune. They return to Chennai where their spin-heavy attack can be expected to test Deccan’s batting.Form guide (most recent first)Deccan: WLWLW (sixth in points table)
Chennai: WWLLW (fifth in points table)Team talkWill Deccan Chargers opt for the off-colour Pragyan Ojha at Chepauk? Ojha, who was a star performer in previous IPL editions, has been looted for runs but they might be tempted to give him a go on Sunday. Surely, now, JP Duminy, or even Michael Lumb, will be given a go in place of Cameron White?Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector. In the spotlightS Badrinath has been one of the most classically pure batsmen in this IPL. Everything seems to have fallen in place for him this IPL season; he hasn’t been dismissed in his last three games and has harvested runs in some style. Interestingly, he will face Dale Steyn, the man who made him look like a novice in his last Test match. The ball cut in, swung out, reared at the throat, and Badrinath struggled; his critics have used that failure to fuel their arguments. Will there be a mini-redemption for him on Sunday?India loves their quick bowlers because there haven’t been many in their history. And so when Ishant Sharma harassed Ricky Ponting in a furious spell at Perth, they thought they had found a new hero. However, Ishant slowly lost his mojo and with it his place in the national team. He sparkled on a pitch that had something for the seamers against Kochi. Will it be the start of his journey back to the highest level or was it just a one-off?Prime numbers Kumar Sangakkara and Badrinath are the top scorers for their respective sides and both have made 235 runs. Chennai have two other batsman who have tallied more than 200 but Deccan’s second highest run-tally is 144 (Bharat Chipli).
Doug Bollinger is the only bowler from either of these teams who has an economy rate of under 6 an over (5.93) The chatter”Our captain [Sangakkara] is playing beautifully at the moment, Sunny Sohal has done well, [Bharat] Chipli has also done quite well. Mishra’s been outstanding, probably one of the best bowlers in the competition. Everyone’s beating everyone out there. No one’s really slipping away at the top of the table. If we win tomorrow it will be our fourth win and we’ll be pretty close to those top four positions.”

We'd love to spoil an Indian party – Strauss

England’s game against India has been billed as a marquee encounter and the pre-match hype, particularly in the host city of Bangalore, has already reached almost frenzied levels

Liam Brickhill in Bangalore26-Feb-2011England’s game against India has been billed as a marquee encounter and the pre-match hype, particularly in the host city of Bangalore, has already reached frenzied levels. England captain Andrew Strauss admitted “huge anticipation” ahead of the game but also believes it will inspire Kevin Pietersen, who is potentially England’s game-changer at the top of the order but made a subdued start to the tournament against Netherlands. With expectations on the home side running high, Strauss added: “we’d love to spoil an Indian party here in Bangalore.””It’s going to be a huge atmosphere,” he said. “It’s one of those games that everyone dreams of playing, against India at the World Cup on their home turf. It’s a great opportunity for us and one that we’re very excited about. [A win] would potentially be a huge lift for us, and it would send out a pretty strong marker to other sides. But we’ve got to do it first. We’ve got to concentrate on the process of doing it.”The build-up to this game has put the spotlight on players on both sides but Pietersen, who scored a century in England’s last game against India in November 2008 but hasn’t managed one in ODIs since, is one player who won’t mind that one bit. Strauss suggested that “it’s the sort of match that brings out the best in him”.”Opening the batting is giving him [Pietersen] a fresh outlook on his one-day cricket, and hopefully he’ll transform that into big runs as well,” Strauss said. “He’s performed well in the subcontinent before. He obviously knows this wicket well because he’s played in the IPL here, and in the big matches and big tournaments generally we see the best of Kevin Pietersen.”Pietersen has averaged just 22.13 in ODIs since that Cuttack ton but Strauss insisted he had no doubts over his effectiveness in one-day cricket and that the team expected him to perform.”I don’t think it’s the time to take the pressure off. It’s a World Cup and we all need to stand up and perform, he knows that as well as anyone else. We know what he can bring to our side when he does perform, because he’s a match-winning player and one that other sides will fear. I’ve got no issues, I’m very confident he’s going to put in some telling performances in the course of this World Cup.”Even with a fully-firing Pietersen, England are sure to face a stern challenge from an Indian team on familiar terrain and primed to go the distance in this tournament, backed by fervent home support. “Playing India in their home conditions, that’s always a big challenge for you as a side,” admitted Strauss, “but we’re up for that challenge, and we think we can do well. It’s not something we’re overawed about, it’s something we’re excited about.”They’re a strong side in their home conditions, there’s no doubt about that. We played well against them in England, but not in India. But we’ve evolved a lot as a side in the last 12 to 24 months. We’ll take a lot of confidence from how the guys played in the Twenty20 World Cup, playing under pressure, and our bowlers are a lot smarter now, which is probably crucial out here. We need to play well, we’re under no illusions about that, but there’s a real vibe and excitement and enthusiasm that I hope the guys will bring to the pitch tomorrow afternoon.”Speaking of the pitch, Strauss explained that the England set-up had been fed conflicting reports on how the wicket at the Chinnaswamy Stadium will play, and unseasonal rainfall in the city hasn’t helped their assessment. The warm-up matches at the ground, and particularly India’s game against Australia, suggested conditions could suit the spinners. Strauss said England would have to “tailor our side to the conditions that we think are going to be most prevalent. We probably won’t know that until tomorrow morning”.Strauss on the UDRS at the World Cup

“Generally I’ve been a fan of the UDRS. I think we’ve got more decisions right as a result of it. It’s very new in one-day cricket, and I think over the course of this tournament we might get a better idea as to whether it works as well in one-day cricket as it does in Test cricket. As a captain it’s a great tool to have in your armoury, if you think an umpire’s made a poor decision, to be able to get that over-turned. You’ve obviously got to be clever in terms of judging which ones you call for a review and which ones you don’t.”

Strauss did hint England could follow the trend already set by several teams and play more than one spinner and possibly even give the new ball to one of the slow bowlers. “It’s definitely an option,” he said. “If it’s going to turn like it did in the warm-up game then two spinners are also going to be a very strong option for us. But it’s important not to be too blinkered into assuming that it’s going to do something. There’s a bit of weather around at the moment so that might change the look of the wicket and we’re going to have to make a smart choice at the toss.”The city was drenched by a torrential downpour on Friday, and while Saturday was muggy but rain-free, a thick cover of cloud remained and there’s a chance the weather could play a role on Sunday. With that in mind, Strauss suggested England might opt for the relative safety of chasing with an eye on the Duckworth-Lewis tables.”That’s always an option when there’s rain around. It’s better to know the situation than not to know. But we’ll assess the conditions at the toss. It’s too early to say anything categorically at this stage. In terms of the conditions, I always think you want to be the man making the choice [at the toss]. The key is to assess the conditions before the game starts and hopefully we’ll be able to do that over the next 24 hours.”While it would be a shame for the weather to dampen what could be an intense and emotional encounter, the threat of a storm could also add to the drama sure to unfold in front of a ‘housefull’ stadium. The ground is sure to be packed to the rafters despite the continuing furore over tickets and the deafening shouts of 40,000 energized spectators will make it a challenge for Strauss to maintain control in the field.”There’s going to be a lot of sign language involved, I think. It’s something we’ve definitely talked about. Trying to get people’s attention is going to be difficult, so people are going to have to keep their eyes on me. Fielders are going to have to be smart too, knowing when they should be saving two or when they need to be right on the boundary. These are things we try to do day in and day out, so hopefully it shouldn’t be too different.”

Hong Kong take title

A round-up of action from the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jan-2011

Mark Chapman’s 70 guided Hong Kong’s chase as they beat PNG by four wickets•ICC/Cricket Europe

Mark Chapman’s half-century powered Hong Kong to a four-wicket win over Papua New Guinea in the final of the ICC World Cricket League Division Three, at the Kowloon Cricket Club. The 16-year-old Chapman’s unbeaten 70 anchored Hong Kong’s chase after their bowlers, led by Najeeb Amar, restricted PNG to 202 for 9.PNG chose to bat and got off to a steady start with their openers Tony Ura and Jack Vare putting on 77 runs in just under 21 overs. Amar picked up the first of his three wickets when he dismissed Ura for 51. Asad Vala was run out in the next over but Vare and Chris Amini batted solidly for a half-century stand to take PNG to 133 for 2. Aizaz Khan picked up Vare for 48 and the dismissal, in the 37th over, triggered a collapse. Nizakat Khan dismissed Kila Pala and Christopher Kent in the 38th over, and the slide continued as PNG lost seven wickets for 69 runs. Amini fell on the penultimate ball of the innings as PNG just managed to nudge past 200.PNG needed a strong reply from their bowlers if they were to have any chances of defending their total. Hitolo Areni provided the first breakthrough when he had Courtney Kruger lbw in the sixth over. Roy Lamsam and Hussain Butt, who made a half-century when Hong Kong beat PNG in their final league game, batted solidly but Rarva Dikana struck to dismiss both of them in quick succession as Hong Kong looked in trouble at 60 for 3. However, Chapman played a determined knock, stringing together useful partnerships with Irfan Ahmed, Nizakat and Waqas Barkat, to wrest the advantage in Hong Kong’s favour. Najeeb hit some big shots as his unbeaten 37-run partnership with Chapman carried Hong Kong home. Chapman was declared the Man of the Match.”Today I feel like I’m flying, like I am sat on the moon,” said a delighted Najeeb Amar. “I am so happy that we’ve won the tournament. I was delighted to score the winning the runs with Mark Chapman in front of our home crowd. Credit must not just go to the team but also our coach, Charlie Burke. He’s unbelievable, he made my job easier, he gave us a simple task: don’t panic and the results will come, which they did this week.”Our team is full of surprises and talented guys, especially Mark Chapman among many others, they can prove themselves against any team and hopefully when we get to Dubai we can do the same. The teams in Division Two will be a tough task, but the way we perform and play and we can make it any level and we’re confident.””It’s an amazing feeling to win in front of my family and home crowd and then take home the man of the match medal too,” Chapman said. “I worked hard today to grind out the runs since I’ve not had a great run this tournament. I don’t know much about Dubai and the sides we’ll face, but I’m sure we’ll be ready.”PNG head coach, Andy Bichel, was obviously disappointed about not taking home the trophy but drew positives from the tournament and the side’s promotion to Division Two. “It’s disappointing to lose in the final, but the plan was to win promotion to Division Two which we have done,” he said. “We’re a young squad and hopefully this experience will inspire them to play better in Dubai.”We haven’t looked forward to Division Two yet, but it’s about being prepared to play at that one level up. Its about having plans for batsmen who will be of a higher standard, being in different conditions with different pitches. The higher standard you go, the better the wickets will get, the better the teams are and it will be a real test for us – we’ve got the players to do well, its now about preparing for the event.”

An unbeaten century by Adnan Ilyas led Oman to third place, as they beat Italy by eight wickets at the Hong Kong Cricket Club. Ilyas scored 120 off 105 balls, and put together a 198-run partnership with Vaibhav Wategaonkar, who scored 87 not out, as Oman chased down Italy’s 251 in just 41 overs. Italy had reached their score on the back of a quick 78 by wicketkeeper Hayden Patrizi and a measured 81 by captain Alessandro Bonora. The two put together 99 runs for the fifth wicket. Italy ended their innings on a high after smashing 51 runs off the last four overs, but the score proved to be an easy target for Oman.”It’s fantastic to win Player of the Tournament, but is somewhat bittersweet as we’ve not managed to win promotion this week,” said Peter Petricola. “I wasn’t able to play today as I’ve been suffering some soreness after bowling for the first time in a while for the side, but claiming those 11 wickets and scoring those runs for Italy has been worth it to see us stay in Division Three.”I think this week has shown we have the ability to challenge the sides in Division Three and if things had gone our way we could’ve have made it up a division, but I’m happy we’ve maintained our position.”

USA finished last after Denmark thumped them by 84 runs at the Mission Road Ground. Denmark’s wicketkeeper Freddie Klokker set up the win with an unbeaten century that took his side to 240, seamer Basit Raja then ran through USA’s top order, and some tight fielding from Denmark sealed the win. Three USA batsmen were run out as they crashed to 156 all out in 43 overs. Raja took 3 for 25 and his opening spell helped reduce USA to 48 for 4. They never recovered and were soon 105 for 9. Durale Forrest and Muhammad Ghous added 51 for the last wicket but it was little consolation for USA. They and Denmark will both be relegated to Division 4.USA captain Steve Massiah was reprimanded and warned by the ICC for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct after showing dissent at the umpire’s decision.
