Milinkovic-Savic: Conte’s own Jorginho?

Tottenham Hotspur are set for a busy summer transfer window as manager Antonio Conte looks to make his own mark on this largely-inherited Lilywhites squad.

As many as ten players could be shown the exit door in a bid to increase the Italian’s transfer kitty, ranging from the likes of exiled duo Joe Rodon and Steven Bergwijn to usual starters Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal, as per The Evening Standard.

Dan Kilpatrick also reports that Conte is on the lookout for a new midfielder, one similar to and in the mould of Chelsea star Jorginho, putting Harry Winks’ future in jeopardy.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Coincidentally, the north London outfit have also been linked with a move for Lazio sensation Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who could well fit that exact profile.

The Serbia international has a whole host of clubs pursuing his signature, including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Juventus, so he won’t be an easy man to land this off-season, that’s for sure.

Milinkovic-Savic has been something of a standout and consistent performer for Maurizio Sarri, who took the Italian midfielder to Stamford Bridge with him from Napoli in July 2018, so it’s no wonder the 27-year-old has been a key player for him in Rome.

As per WhoScored, the £45m-rated powerhouse sits atop the Lazio charts for seasonal average rating, managing a 7.37 in Serie A. He has also delivered more assists (11) than any other player, on top of providing ten goals too.

However, the 6 foot 3 titan does more than just offer up goal contributions. Compared to his positional peers in Europe over the last 365 days, the Serbian has ranked inside the top 2% for progressive passes (6.08 per 90), top 8% for aerial duels won (2.65 per 90) and the top 11% for passes attempted (66.96 per 90), via FBRef.

Elsewhere, he leads the squad for tackles won (1.9 per game) and isn’t too far behind for interceptions either (one per game), thus making him one of the most complete and all-round midfielders in the game right now.

As we know with Jorginho, he can offer goals through his set-piece ability but for the Blues, he has averaged at least 2.1 tackles and 1.3 interceptions in every Premier League season since arriving at Stamford Bridge, as per WhoScored.

The similarities between the two are striking, so heading into the summer, Spurs must make Milinkovic-Savic one of their top targets to appease Conte.

Once described by Parma sporting director Demetrio Albertini as a “great champion” with “extraordinary elegance” and compared to Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, the Lazio star would be a stunning arrival in N17 and ultimately one for whom Conte is clearly longing heading into next season.

In Milinkovic-Savic, the Spurs boss could well find that Jorginho-like goalscoring enforcer that he desires.

– Me sinto pronto e preparado. Gosto de jogar decisões e estou confiante que posso ajudar o São Paulo nesses jogos importantes, nessa reta final do Paulistão – afirmou Caíque, que, aos poucos, busca se consolidar no Tricolor.

Morkel warns his best is yet to come

Morne Morkel may have charged through Pakistan’s lower-order to finish with 5 for 54 but he insists he’s ‘only firing at 75%’ and warned that he has plenty more to offer after South Africa took charge of the first Test in Dubai

Morne Morkel may have charged through Pakistan’s lower-order to finish with 5 for 54 but he insists he’s ‘only firing at 75%’ and warned that he has plenty more to offer after South Africa took control of the first Test in Dubai.Morkel had a productive one-day series but was below his best on the second day here as Pakistan scrapped hard to reach 144 for 2. Yet after a firm word from his captain Graeme Smith on the morning of the third day, Morkel found his range with the second new ball, finishing off what Johan Botha’s three wickets started to roll Pakistan out for 248, a collapse of 8 for 72.”Yesterday the idea was to get the ball in the right areas and be aggressive with the new ball but we weren’t really on the mark,” he told reporters. “Graeme [Smith] sat us down this morning, we set high standards for ourselves as a bowling unit and I’m just happy and pleased that things paid off.”Morkel roughed up the lower order with some short stuff on his way to his third five-wicket haul but was happy to acknowledge the role played by his fellow bowlers. “I can’t take all of the credit. The whole bowling unit today bowled really well. Johan (Botha) and Paul (Harris) were good yesterday as well. Dale (Steyn) could easily picked up a few wickets. I was lucky that things happened for me. The guys created the pressure from both ends.”South Africa’s top order combined to extend the lead to 271 and with Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis looking set to bat on for a long while yet Morkel has plenty of time to prepare for the final innings. He is now just three short of 100 Test wickets but so far only 33 of his scalps have come in the second half of the game. It could help to explain why South Africa were twice denied by England in their last home series when, at Centurion and Cape Town, the tourists survived nine-wickets down to draw the games. This time Morkel insists he’s prepared for the challenge and thinks he can get better. “I still think I’m only firing at 75%. I think I’ve got some more left in the tank and can improve. But I’m happy with today because as a fast bowler you need confidence and rhythm and this five-for is something I can move forward on.”I was preparing myself mentally to bowl in the second innings from this afternoon itself. I’ve played in a couple of Test matches like the one against England where bowling in the second innings has been a mental challenge. We’ll come up with a game plan tomorrow morning.”

Romano: Man Utd eye Pau Torres move

Manchester United have been linked with Pau Torres as a potential new signing this summer, and now Fabrizio Romano has dropped a fresh update on their pursuit for the player.

What’s the latest?

The Italian journalist and transfer insider took to his Twitter account to confirm the club’s pursuit of the Villarreal centre-back.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

Romano tweeted: “Pau Torres is attracting interest from top clubs again as his release clause will be valid this summer: €55/60m, available until the end of the market.

“Manchester United and Manchester City are both interested – Chelsea have also sent their scouts to follow him.”

Supporters will be excited

If the appointment of Erik ten Hag wasn’t enough to excite supporters of Man United, the opportunity being explored to improve the defensive system in the team will surely leave fans even more excited.

One of the biggest problems that have been identified at the club is the poor defensive play in the team, with the side conceding the most goals of the top eight in the league which has contributed to their struggles this season.

With that being said, the £50m Torres could be a huge breath of fresh air for the club, proving how influential he can be in the back-line for Unai Emery’s side, leading them to success.

Last season Villarreal won the Europa League with the 25-year-old playing a key role, and now the team have qualified for their first Champions League semi-final since 2006 which is an impressive achievement for Torres who has been an important part of the process playing every single game in the European competition.

The 6 f00t 2 star has tallied up impressive statistics this season in La Liga too, proving successful in 80% of his dribbles, winning the majority of his duels (67%), making 4.5 clearances on average per game and has a 94% pass accuracy in his own half, proving that he has an influential presence and is progressive on the ball.

The Red Devils have crashed out of every competition squandering their chances of winning a trophy, and their problems extend to the Premier League too as the side is struggling to qualify for the Champions League with just four games left to go, and six points adrift from the top four.

Acquiring a signing like Torres to improve the defence at Old Trafford could make a huge difference to the team next season and could put Manchester United in a better position to make progress in the league and cup competitions going forward.

England's high, Pakistan's low on a day of extremes

Plays of the Day from the third day of the fourth Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s

Andrew Miller at Lord's28-Aug-2010

Salman Butt had battled hard but was removed by Graeme Swann’s first ball after tea•AFP

Record-breakers of the day
In what turned out to be a misleadingly serene passage of play, Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad spent most of the morning session receiving ovations for one landmark after another. First came Trott’s 150, then England’s 350, then the 250 stand, then Broad’s 150, then England’s 400, then the 300 stand. And so it went on until finally, with lunch looming, Broad was adjudged lbw on review to Saeed Ajmal for 169, having just overhauled his father Chris’s highest Test score of 162. As he returned to the pavilion to a magnificent ovation, he took with him a share in an eighth-wicket world-record stand of 332, having overhauled the 313-run mark set by Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq at Sheikhupura in 1996-97. And his personal score finished just four runs short of Ian Smith’s 173, the highest by a No. 9 in Test history.Honorary Londoner of the day
It’s hard to believe that Jonathan Trott had never played a Test at Lord’s before this season. Following on from his scores of 226 and 36 not out against Bangladesh back in May, he finished today with a magnificent 184 – and had it not been for the comparative clatter of wickets that followed the dismissal of Broad, he would almost certainly have pushed on to become the only man to record two double-hundreds at the ground. But Trott is not merely at home at the home of cricket. His love of London Tests extends south of the river as well, given that his only other Test century was at The Oval against Australia last summer. His current London average now stands at 109 (654 runs in four Tests), which means he is unlikely to be too upset about the ECB’s southern-heavy fixture list next season.Ignominious stat of the day
Before this series, England had not dismissed Pakistan for less than 100 for more than half a century. They’ve now managed that feat three times in four Tests, and while today’s total of 74 was worse than the 80 they made in the second innings at Trent Bridge, it did at least improve on the 72 they made in the first innings at Edgbaston. Nevertheless, they cannot escape the fact that they have now recorded their three lowest totals of all time against England. Curiously, their other two double-figured scores, 87 and 90, were also made on the same tour – their maiden trip to England in 1954. And then as now, they put aside those lows by notching up a remarkable victory at The Oval.Trendsetter of the day
Mohammad Yousuf’s calm assurance was acknowledged as a major factor in that Oval victory, as his veteran knowhow instilled a new confidence in his team-mates and allowed them to build what proved to be a matchwinning first-innings total. Today, however, he was all at sea in a grim four-ball stay, and the shock of his runless departure appeared to scupper any prospect of a fight. His best shot was his first, as he jabbed down effectively on a James Anderson yorker. After that, he looked liable to fall at any moment. He completely lost sight of his second delivery, from Broad, and almost ducked into a full-length delivery, Chris Read style. Two balls later, he was gone anyway, as Broad pegged back his off stump with a beauty. Though he attempted to cling on in the follow-on, Yousuf’s lame dismissal to the final ball of the day, caught in the deep as he top-edged a pull off Steven Finn, was sadly apposite.Collapse of the day
Having failed to dislodge England’s eighth-wicket pairing for the best part of a day, Pakistan managed to ship 11 wickets for 69 in an inept final session of the day. The rot set in from the very first post-tea delivery, bowled inevitably by Graeme Swann, whose ability to strike at the start of a spell is becoming the stuff of legend. Salman Butt was the victim, as he misjudged a tweaker and had his off bail trimmed, even as he stood his ground in the vain hope that Matt Prior had disturbed the stumps with his gloves. It wasn’t to be, however. And by the time Butt fell for the second time in the day, for 21, the combined total of 25 visits to the crease by batsmen not called Trott or Broad added up to a mere 159 – still ten runs shy of Broad’s own total.Record-chaser of the day
Broad is on a mission in this match. Not content with a career-best total, he is aiming to become the 11th England cricketer to complete the 1000 run and 100 wicket double, and the first since Ashley Giles and Andrew Flintoff achieved the feat in the same match at Cape Town in January 2005. By the close, with 1096 runs already to his name, he had taken his wickets tally to 97, having struck in his second over of the match to remove Yasir Hameed. He added Yousuf as well one over later, before nailing Imran Farhat in the follow-on. But the rout that Swann and Finn instigated after tea left him needing some rapid breakthroughs on Sunday morning. Only three men have previously managed the double in the same match – Kapil Dev, John Bracewell and Shaun Pollock.

Tottenham: Media delighted at Skipp news

Numerous members of the media have shared their jubilation after Tottenham Hotspur officially announced a new contract for Oliver Skipp.

The lowdown: A breakthrough year

The 21-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season and has been sorely missed whilst sidelined with an ongoing groin issue.

Having made a first-team debut in the Carabao Cup against West Ham in 2018, Skipp spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Norwich City and helped the East Anglian outfit earn immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

The Spurs academy graduate returned to north London and has since made 18 appearances for the Lilywhites in the top flight, becoming a favourite of Antonio Conte in the process.

The latest: Media react to contract development

Here’s what some reputable Tottenham journalists had to say after developments broke on the youngster’s new deal, posting a plethora of takes on this exciting announcement.

“Brilliant news.” – Rob Guest, Tottenham reporter for Football.London (Twitter).

“I’m Skipping with joy.” – Oli Gamp, Tottenham correspondent for the Daily Mail (Twitter).

“Nice one Skipp… brilliant. #OneOfOurOwn” – Lee McQueen, Tottenham personality and writer for LastWordOnSpurs (Twitter).

“Great news.” – Alasdair Gold, Tottenham correspondent for Football.London (Twitter).

The verdict: Superb news

Tying down the talented England Under-21 international until 2027 is a huge boost to the club as Conte attempts to build a side capable of challenging at the highest echelon once again.

The Italian boss described Skipp as a ‘very important’ member of the Spurs’ side following a 2-0 victory over Brentford in which the energetic Englishman provided two key passes, made one interception and completed one clearance (Sofascore).

The 28-cap youth international will now be desperate to get back to full fitness and prove that the reaction to this news is justified.

Newcastle transfer news on Thomas Strakosha

Newcastle United are reportedly now strongly interested in signing Thomas Strakosha on a free transfer in the summer.

The Lowdown: Goalkeeper wanted

As per The Daily Mail, the Magpies are eyeing as many as four goalkeepers to provide stern competition for Martin Dubravka at St James’ Park.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Dean Henderson, Sam Johnstone, Bernd Leno and Kepa Arrizabalaga have all been mentioned as possible signings, but the Tyneside outfit may also look abroad for a new man in between the sticks.

The Latest: Strakosha eyed by Newcastle

According to Citta Celeste, Newcastle also hold a ‘strong interest’ in Strakosha, whose contract at Lazio expires this summer.

He is ‘torn’ between staying at the club and playing in the Premier League, and the Toon could certainly offer him a route to the English top flight.

The Verdict: Sign him

Capped 19 times by Albania and playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues in Serie A, it is quite mesmerising to think that Strakosha could leave on a free transfer.

Current Italy under-20 manager Alberto Bollini has claimed that the ‘keeper boasts ‘extraordinary athleticism’, while he was also once dubbed ‘explosive‘ and a ‘phenomenon‘ by former Lazio stopper Silvio Proto.

Keeping no fewer than 10 clean sheets in 25 games across all competitions so far this season, and averaging just one goal conceded per game (Transfermarkt), Strakosha is still only 27 years of age, which is relatively young for a goalkeeper.

Therefore, signing him on a free would represent a great piece of business from the Magpies.
