Tottenham: Media delighted at Skipp news

Numerous members of the media have shared their jubilation after Tottenham Hotspur officially announced a new contract for Oliver Skipp.

The lowdown: A breakthrough year

The 21-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season and has been sorely missed whilst sidelined with an ongoing groin issue.

Having made a first-team debut in the Carabao Cup against West Ham in 2018, Skipp spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Norwich City and helped the East Anglian outfit earn immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

The Spurs academy graduate returned to north London and has since made 18 appearances for the Lilywhites in the top flight, becoming a favourite of Antonio Conte in the process.

The latest: Media react to contract development

Here’s what some reputable Tottenham journalists had to say after developments broke on the youngster’s new deal, posting a plethora of takes on this exciting announcement.

“Brilliant news.” – Rob Guest, Tottenham reporter for Football.London (Twitter).

“I’m Skipping with joy.” – Oli Gamp, Tottenham correspondent for the Daily Mail (Twitter).

“Nice one Skipp… brilliant. #OneOfOurOwn” – Lee McQueen, Tottenham personality and writer for LastWordOnSpurs (Twitter).

“Great news.” – Alasdair Gold, Tottenham correspondent for Football.London (Twitter).

The verdict: Superb news

Tying down the talented England Under-21 international until 2027 is a huge boost to the club as Conte attempts to build a side capable of challenging at the highest echelon once again.

The Italian boss described Skipp as a ‘very important’ member of the Spurs’ side following a 2-0 victory over Brentford in which the energetic Englishman provided two key passes, made one interception and completed one clearance (Sofascore).

The 28-cap youth international will now be desperate to get back to full fitness and prove that the reaction to this news is justified.

Onions sidelined for nine months

Graham Onions, the England pace bowler, will undergo surgery next week on a career-threatening back injury which will rule him out of action for up to nine months. He has been plagued by a stress fracture since returning from England’s tour of Bangladesh in March and hasn’t played for Durham this season, but until recently retained hope of making a late push for the Ashes squad.A couple of months ago he was targeting a return to county action for the final few weeks of the season but when he bowled at Lord’s recently, under the supervision of the ECB medical staff, he suffered a further reaction and now surgery has been ruled as his only option.”Obviously I’m shattered to have been ruled out of the Ashes with the prospect of a lengthy recovery period,” he said. “After experiencing the euphoria of being part of an Ashes-winning England team last year, I was determined to get myself fit for selection ahead of this winter’s tour of Australia.”Unfortunately that’s not to be and, even though we have tried every possible form of treatment, surgery is the only option left. While I’m devastated to be facing such a long lay-off from cricket, I’m determined to overcome this setback and make sure I get back bowling again next year and work my way back into England calculations.”It’s been a difficult period for me but I realise that I have to have this operation if I want to play cricket again. I want to thank the ECB medical team for all their ongoing hard work and support.”Onions had enjoyed an impressive start to his international career with a five-wicket haul on debut against West Indies, at Lord’s, in 2009 before playing in three of last year’s Ashes Tests. However, his finest hours came with the bat when he twice denied South Africa victory during the winter series, fending off final overs from Makhaya Ntini at Centurion Park and Morne Morkel at Cape Town.”Graham has been suffering from ongoing discomfort due to stress fractures on both sides of his back,” Nick Peirce, the ECB chief medical officer, said. “We have thoroughly exhausted all avenues of conservative treatment and rehabilitation with surgery very much seen as a last resort.”Unfortunately Graham has not responded to these forms of treatment and as a result we have no option left but to undertake a course of treatment involving surgery. The surgery Graham faces is a relatively significant operation and his rehabilitation will see him ruled out of all cricket for approximately up to nine months.”His rehabilitation will be overseen and carried out by the ECB medical team in conjunction with the medical staff at Durham.”

Bayliss praises bowlers' effort on dead pitch

Trevor Bayliss has praised his bowlers for their consistency and discipline on a flat SSC pitch after they captured five wickets to reduce India to 669 for 9

Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, has praised his bowlers for their consistency and discipline on a flat SSC pitch after they captured five wickets to reduce India to 669 for 9 on the fourth day in Colombo.”What we are happy about is that we stuck to our game plan and have been able to bowl to those fielding plans,” Bayliss said. “Everyone knows it’s been a very good batting wicket and a very difficult one for the bowlers to bowl on. We’ve been striving for over a period of time to be consistent and have discipline and we’ve shown that.”Some of the plans may not have worked, but at least we bowled according to those plans and made it as difficult as possible for the Indians to score. It’s not often that you can get the Indians for less than 300 for two days in a row. Hats off to our boys, they’ve done pretty well to actually take nine wickets. It’s a great effort. On the wicket out there, every time you pitch it up, it went for four. It was pretty silly to keep pitching the ball up, so we thought we make it difficult for them to score and hopefully they make a mistake and get out.”Bayliss said the game would have taken a different turn had wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene held on to a catch off Sachin Tendulkar, when the batsman was on 29. He went on to score his fifth double-century and ensured India averted the follow-on. “When we took those three quick wickets, and if we were able to take another one or two, the game could have been different,” Bayliss said. “We put one catch down when he [Tendulkar] was on 29 and, when we looked back on it, it was a reasonably easy chance. By no means blaming the ‘keeper, who is one of the best in the world, he’s a done a great job for us in the past.”If we had been able to take that catch who knows what might have happened. The great players probably don’t get any more luck than anyone else. They take advantage of that luck and he’s [Tendulkar] certainly done that in this match.”Bayliss also said that it was unfair to compare the bowlers comprising the present bowling attack with Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan. “It’s a bit hard to judge the bowlers on their performances in this match. We played on this wicket before. It’s been flat and the great Murali has struggled to take wickets as well.”Sri Lanka won’t take as many wickets in a hurry like they have done in the past with Murali in the team. This is a very flat wicket on the last two days and we got two young bowlers [Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv], who bowled extremely well with two and four wickets, which is a good performance.”Bayliss said a bit of extra grass on the pitch would have been ideal for the bowlers. “You will be surprised how much the ball will turn, there might be a little bit of movement and pace for the fast bowlers, and the batters would enjoy the ball coming onto the bat a little more. The wicket will have a little more for the spinners to grip on to.”Bayliss said Sri Lanka would go out and get some batting practice on the final day and keep the Indians on the field for as long as possible ahead of the deciding Test at the P Sara Stadium.

West Ham: Crook criticises Moyes’ January

West Ham United should not have targeted unrealistic signings in the January transfer window.

What’s been said?

That’s according to a claim made by Alex Crook, with the journalist recently stating his belief on talkSPORT that, rather than pursuing deals for the likes of Leeds United duo Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, as well as Benfica centre-forward Darwin Nunez, David Moyes and his West Ham transfer team should have been targeting more attainable additions – such as the now-Burnley striker Wout Weghorst.

Regarding the Hammers’ winter window, Crook said: “Wout Weghorst, £12m he cost Burnley from Wolfsburg and he was absolutely brilliant at Brighton. Surely that would have been an easier deal for West Ham? They were looking for alternatives to Antonio, there’s a player who they know wants to come to the Premier League.

“And before you ‘at’ me Burnley fans [on Twitter], I don’t disrespect Burnley, but if you have a choice between Burnley and West Ham, you would go to West Ham. I don’t understand why they didn’t try and get that deal done. They ended the window chasing unrealistic targets, like Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha at Leeds.

“They tried to get Darwin Nunez from Benfica – Brighton tried to sign him last summer and it proved impossible. They should have gone for Weghorst. He was a brilliant option and could have given them that lift like Jesse Lingard gave them last season.”

Weghorst will be haunting Moyes

Considering just how impressive Weghorst has been for Burnley since his £12m move to Turf Moor last month, in addition to the fact that ExWHUemployee revealed late last year that the 29-year-old was a “definite target” for the Hammers in the January window, exactly why Moyes did not make a move for the Netherlands international is rather questionable.

Indeed, over his four Premier League appearances so far for the Clarets, the £18m-rated hitman has already scored one goal, registered two assists and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.3 shots and making 1.3 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £58k-per-week striker average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.28, while his remarkable performances have also seen the Dutchman earn extremely high praise, with Ian Wright claiming that the centre-forward is “exactly what Burnley need” in attack, while Get German Football News editor-in-chief Daniel Pinder previously stated of Weghorst in an exclusive interview with FFC:

“I think he’d be a perfect replacement for Harry Kane, should he leave [Tottenham Hotspur]. Whether it’s because he’s Dutch or not, he’s got similar attributes to Van Nistelrooy.

“He’s tall, strong, [and] even though he’s really tall, possesses a great touch – his movement is underappreciated in the Bundesliga. His threat inside the area, his work ethic in pressing the opposition defence. His stats alone are evidence of why he’s well regarded at European clubs and is a wanted man this summer.”

As such, with West Ham being fully aware of the 29-year-old’s talents prior to his move to Burnley, in addition to the club’s desperate need of backup and competition for the injury-prone Michail Antonio – who has now failed to score in his last six Premier League fixtures – Moyes’ decision not to pursue a deal for the player Frank De Boer dubbed “astonishing” this winter will undoubtedly be haunting the 58-year-old.
