Newcastle handed Joe Willock relief

Newcastle United have been handed a key injury relief over central midfielder Joe Willock…

What’s the latest?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has explained why the midfielder was not in the squad to face Wolves on Friday night in their 1-0 win over Bruno Lage’s men.

The ex-Arsenal man has been struggling with a knee injury and the head coach is now confident that he will not be out of action for an extended period of time.

Howe told The Chronicle: “Joe wasn’t going to make it, so we made a decision on him earlier in the week – I can’t remember the day, but he’s gone away, he’s had an injection in his knee. We hope that that will fix the problem for him.

“We don’t think he’ll be out long-term, we think it won’t be long before he’s back in contention to play, but until he’s back, you can never say never. But we hope that’s fixed the pain that he’s had.”

Eddie Howe will be ecstatic

The Toon boss will surely be ecstatic with Willock’s recovery as his comments indicate that he is on the verge of overcoming the problem with his knee.

Having Willock back fit and available will be a big boost for Howe as he has the quality to be a match-winner for the team on his day.

He showcased his quality in the Premier League last season as he enjoyed a sensational loan spell with the club. The midfielder joined on loan from Arsenal in January and ended the campaign on a whopping eight top-flight goals, which shows that he has the ability to score goals at this level.

Although, he has found goals harder to come by since signing on a permanent basis. Willock has two goals in 25 matches this term, but his 22 starts in the division suggest that Howe still likes what he sees from the Englishman out on the pitch in spite of his lack of goals in comparison to 2020/21.

Whilst he has not been as prolific in the final third, he has added bite to his game in the middle of the park. The ex-Arsenal man has made an impressive 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game, which shows that he is getting stuck in and winning the ball back for his team.

Therefore, Howe will be ecstatic with his prospective return as he offers a defensive steeliness and has the potential to win a game if he can rediscover his goalscoring touch from midfield.

AND in other news, Howe must boldly axe NUFC’s “breathtaking” £93k-p/w “jewel” who drives Shearer “mad”…

Bayliss praises bowlers' effort on dead pitch

Trevor Bayliss has praised his bowlers for their consistency and discipline on a flat SSC pitch after they captured five wickets to reduce India to 669 for 9

Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, has praised his bowlers for their consistency and discipline on a flat SSC pitch after they captured five wickets to reduce India to 669 for 9 on the fourth day in Colombo.”What we are happy about is that we stuck to our game plan and have been able to bowl to those fielding plans,” Bayliss said. “Everyone knows it’s been a very good batting wicket and a very difficult one for the bowlers to bowl on. We’ve been striving for over a period of time to be consistent and have discipline and we’ve shown that.”Some of the plans may not have worked, but at least we bowled according to those plans and made it as difficult as possible for the Indians to score. It’s not often that you can get the Indians for less than 300 for two days in a row. Hats off to our boys, they’ve done pretty well to actually take nine wickets. It’s a great effort. On the wicket out there, every time you pitch it up, it went for four. It was pretty silly to keep pitching the ball up, so we thought we make it difficult for them to score and hopefully they make a mistake and get out.”Bayliss said the game would have taken a different turn had wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene held on to a catch off Sachin Tendulkar, when the batsman was on 29. He went on to score his fifth double-century and ensured India averted the follow-on. “When we took those three quick wickets, and if we were able to take another one or two, the game could have been different,” Bayliss said. “We put one catch down when he [Tendulkar] was on 29 and, when we looked back on it, it was a reasonably easy chance. By no means blaming the ‘keeper, who is one of the best in the world, he’s a done a great job for us in the past.”If we had been able to take that catch who knows what might have happened. The great players probably don’t get any more luck than anyone else. They take advantage of that luck and he’s [Tendulkar] certainly done that in this match.”Bayliss also said that it was unfair to compare the bowlers comprising the present bowling attack with Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan. “It’s a bit hard to judge the bowlers on their performances in this match. We played on this wicket before. It’s been flat and the great Murali has struggled to take wickets as well.”Sri Lanka won’t take as many wickets in a hurry like they have done in the past with Murali in the team. This is a very flat wicket on the last two days and we got two young bowlers [Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv], who bowled extremely well with two and four wickets, which is a good performance.”Bayliss said a bit of extra grass on the pitch would have been ideal for the bowlers. “You will be surprised how much the ball will turn, there might be a little bit of movement and pace for the fast bowlers, and the batters would enjoy the ball coming onto the bat a little more. The wicket will have a little more for the spinners to grip on to.”Bayliss said Sri Lanka would go out and get some batting practice on the final day and keep the Indians on the field for as long as possible ahead of the deciding Test at the P Sara Stadium.

Scotland edge towards victory

It was a poor day for Netherlands in the field and with the bat, with defeat looming at the end of the third day at Deventer

Cricinfo staff12-Jun-2010
ScorecardIt was a poor day for Netherlands in the field and with the bat, with defeat looming at the end of the third day at Deventer. The Scotland lower order frustrated Netherlands to extend their first innings lead to 181 before the bowlers strengthened their position. Netherlands failed to stage a comeback with the bat and lost eight wickets, still trailing by 13 runs.Scotland’s overnight pair of Matthew Parker and Majid Haq resumed on 273 for 7 and went on to add 65 for the eighth wicket. Pieter Seelaar got the breakthrough with the wicket of Haq, followed by Gordon Drummond soon after, but Netherlands struggled to finish off the innings. Parker and Gordon Goudie added 61 for the tenth wicket, with Goudie contributing 44. Seelaar wrapped up the innings when he had Parker caught for 65, and finished with 3 for 67.Netherlands, in their second innings, struggled to put together solid partnerships to first erase the deficit and then set a target. Eric Szwarczynski and Peter Borren made fifties but the rest failed to get on top of the Scotland attack, and the three run-outs didn’t help their cause. Richie Berrington, the seamer, took three wickets while Parker and Drummond took one apiece. Borren remained unbeaten on 52 with the tail for company. The best Netherlands can do is to avoid an innings defeat.

Tottenham: Levy and Paratici plot Liverpool revenge as scouts watch Porto star

Tottenham sent officials to watch Porto take on Sporting CP in a fiery Primeira Liga contest on Friday night, with the Portuguese press revealing they may have their eyes on a former Liverpool target.

The Lowdown: Tottenham miss out

Tottenham fans know all too well about their widely reported but failed pursuit of Luis Diaz, with the player’s father recently revealing that the Lilywhites ‘hesitated’, allowing Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to swoop in.

Diaz has started well in the Premier League, with Klopp hailing his debut in midweek against Leicester as ‘one of the best I ever saw’.

Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy eventually settled on two signings from Paratici’s former club, with Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski joining at the end of the month, but it seems the Tottenham chiefs could now be plotting some revenge on Liverpool.

The Latest: Paratici and Levy strike back?

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Tottenham scouts were in attendance on Friday as Porto drew 2-2 in a crazy encounter with Sporting, which saw five red cards, four of which came in stoppage time.

While the report doesn’t detail exactly what the Spurs officials were doing there, it does name-check an interesting possible target in the shape of Porto playmaker Fabio Vieira.

As per another Portuguese outlet, Record, the 21 year-old rejected a move to Liverpool in last summer’s transfer window.

The Verdict: Exciting prospect

It’s not hard to see why Sport Witness claim the young midfielder ‘stood out’ in Friday’s match, as he scored one of his side’s goals and assisted the other.

Whoscored list Vieira as ‘very strong’ at through balls, key passes and set pieces, and that was on full display as he racked up two key passes and nine crosses, while also completing seven of ten long ball attempts, the most in his team.

One Football have hailed him as a ‘rising star’ and he already has ten goals in 17 games for Portugal’s Under-21 side, with his manager there, Rui Jorge, hailing the Porto starlet as ‘a very technically advanced player’ with a ‘great future’.

With Paratici’s attention now of course turning to the summer transfer window, it will be interesting to see if more concrete links to Vieira emerge in the coming days and weeks.

Paratici has allegedly already made an offer for a soon-to-be free agent!

Worcestershire hopes washed away

Steve Rhodes claimed a “moral victory” for Worcestershire after rain thwarted their victory attempt on the final day of the Championship match against Gloucestershire

George Dobell at New Road01-Jun-2010
ScorecardSteve Rhodes claimed a “moral victory” for Worcestershire after rain thwarted their victory attempt on the final day of the Championship match against Gloucestershire.Worcestershire would have risen to second in the division two table had they been able to secure the win. But, with rain preventing any play until 3.45, the visitors were able to cling on for a draw. Perhaps, had Vikram Solanki clung on to a chance offered by Vikram Banerjee at fourth slip, Worcestershire might have been able to force victory. But, by then, Gloucestershire were already 85 runs ahead with just 18 overs remaining. It was wretched luck for Alan Richardson, however. The 35-year-old seamer, who bowled 28 accurate overs in the second innings, was easily the pick of the attack and richly deserved his third five-wicket haul of the campaign.A couple of Gloucestershire players were also grateful for the reprieve. Both James Franklin and Chris Taylor were dismissed by bizarrely inappropriate shots. Franklin obligingly pulled directly to the man positioned for the shot on the square-leg boundary, before Taylor undid much of the value of his resistance with a horrid heave across the line.Without Richard Jones, however, who was off the field with a hamstring strain, Richardson lacked support and Gloucestershire were able to cling on until the sides agreed to shake hands on the draw with 10 of the scheduled overs remaining. Jones will undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury in the next 24 hours.”It’s very frustrating,” Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, said afterwards. “I felt we played all the cricket in the game but we can’t control the weather. That’s two games in a row we’ve had the best of draws. It’s a moral victory.”Rhodes expressed satisfaction at Worcestershire’s start to the season, however, taking particular pleasure in the performance of the club’s younger players.”We’re reasonably well placed,” he said. “We’ve only lost one [championship] game – which is better than anyone else in the division – and we’ve shown a bit of resilience. There are good signs for the future. Our two leading run scorers are aged 20 and 22 [Alexei Kervezee and Moeen Ali respectively] while until this game 23-year-old Richard Jones was our leading wicket taker. All three are very ambitious and, with hard work, can go a stage further.”I’ve always said I want us to be in a position to challenge for promotion in the last month of the season. That would be lovely. We’re a proud county and we want to be playing in the top division.”Gloucestershire were stung by the news that they had suffered a two-point deduction for their tardy over rate. Still, they are up to second in the table (equal on points with Sussex, who have a game in hand) and look likely to be involved in the promotion race.”We still felt we could win this morning,” their captain, Alex Gidman said afterwards. “But to come out of the game with a draw having not played our best cricket is a positive for us.”Gidman also insisted he was not concerned by his side’s poor form with the bat. Despite Gloucestershire averaging the lowest score per wicket of any side in the country and are the only team without a first-class century in the campaign.”I’m not really worried, no,” he said. “We’ve played on some tough wickets and, at the halfway stage of the season, we’re challenging for promotion. Statistics are fine, but it’s what works for the team that is important, and we’re right in the hunt.”Meanwhile Gloucestershire have added Ian Butler to their squad for the T20 Cup. The fast bowling allrounder, who recently impressed in New Zealand’s World T20 campaign, joins up with compatriots John Bracewell, Hamish Marshall and James Franklin in Bristol.
