Everton fans don’t want Roberto Martinez

Lots of Everton fans have been flocking to reports that former Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has emerged as the frontrunner in the search for a replacement for Rafael Benitez.

On Sunday, Everton announced the departure of the 61-year-old as first team manager, putting an end to his seven-month tenure at the club. This news did not come as a surprise – the Toffees have produced one of their worst starts to the league for many years, as they sit 16th in the table beyond the midway point of the season, winning just one of their last 13 top-flight matches.

The final nail in the coffin for Benitez came as Everton embarrassingly lost to relegation-threatened Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday. The defeat came amid a toxic backdrop of fan protests demanding his sacking and even saw one spectator invade the pitch to try and confront the ex-Newcastle boss.

Following the Spaniard’s departure as manager, numerous candidates have been linked with the job. However, the most shocking reactions have arisen following the most recent news regarding former Toffees boss Martinez.

These Everton fans flock to Martinez manager news

According to Dominic King of the Daily Mail, the 48-year-old has emerged as the frontrunner for a return to Everton, less than six years after he was sacked by Farhad Moshiri.

Numerous Toffees fans flocked to the news of this report on Twitter, with many furious at hearing that Belgium would be due £2m in compensation if Martinez completes his Goodison Park return.

Here’s what these fans said, with some deploring the prospective £2m outlay and others unconvinced by the Spaniard given how badly his previous spell on Merseyside ended in 2016. One angry Evertonian even raged that re-hiring Martinez would be a “braindead appointment”:

“This would be another braindead appointment that would end in inevitable disaster with most fans, again, saying we told you so.”

Chris Gayle has been dismissed four times by Doug Bollinger this season and admits the left-arm fast man has his number. Gayle, the West Indies captain, didn’t know who Bollinger was before the second Test in December, but has learned quickly and is still trying to find a way to deal with him.Gayle was lbw first ball in Adelaide on Tuesday as Australia raced to a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. “He has my measure, definitely,” Gayle said in the Advertiser. “There is no doubt about that.”Despite his troubles, Gayle is looking forward to his next contest with Bollinger at the SCG in the third match on Friday. “These things are good for the game,” he said. “Hopefully we can get a good start in Sydney and we don’t expose our middle order again.”The Australians have talked about cramping Gayle for room and the move has been successful, with the batsman scoring seven runs in the opening two fixtures. Bollinger’s plan in Adelaide revolved around bowling as straight as possible.”It was great to get Chris Gayle again,” Bollinger said. “If he wants to be my bunny he can. I’ll be happy to get him again.”The West Indians currently need much more than a firing Gayle if they are to overcome the Australians in any of the final three matches. Interest in the series is dwindling and only 8358 spectators turned up in Adelaide in a record low attendance there for an ODI.”We can still win 3-2,” Gayle said. “If we can get to 2-1, we can get things happening for us. We need to make it more interesting so you can get some more ticket sales.”

Sore Lee 'may never bowl another ball'

Brett Lee has conceded that he might never bowl another ball, although he has not completely given up hope of returning to international cricket

Brett Lee has described his elbow surgery as the most painful he had ever endured•AFP

Brett Lee has conceded that he might never bowl again, although he has not completely given up hope of returning to international cricket. Lee is recovering from elbow surgery that he described as the most painful he had ever encountered and he remains uncertain of when or if he will be able to resume bowling. The operation in early December ruled Lee out of Australia’s entire home summer of Tests and ODIs and he has not played at any level since mid-November. Lee, 33, last walked out in a Test team in December 2008 and while he remains an important one-day player when fit, he knows his future depends on how he recovers from his latest injury.”As far as my cricket goes, anything is possible,” Lee told the . “I may play one-dayers, or no cricket at all. I may never bowl another ball and if that’s the case, I’m so satisfied with my career and my longevity. I’m not saying it’s definitely over, but I’m not sure what I want to be just yet.”To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure what I still want to do in my cricketing life. I need to get to the stage where, if I want to, I can do what I need to do on the field. If it’s the case that I don’t play again, well, that’s the case. There is a part of me that would like to play some sort of cricket again.”Lee has endured plenty of injuries over his decade-long international career but has still found time to take 310 Test wickets at 30.81 and 324 ODI wickets at 23.01. However, he said the elbow problem was proving especially tough to get over.”This has been the hardest surgery I’ve been through,” he said. “It’s certainly been the most painful. There’s no miracle treatment for me. It’s taking time. I still don’t know when I’ll be able to bowl again. I can’t even give you an exact time. I will see how the arm pulls up because I can’t achieve any aspirations in cricket unless my body is functional.”With Lee and his fellow senior fast man Stuart Clark both enduring long periods on the sidelines, Australia’s fast-bowling depth has been tested this summer and the results have been promising. Lee said he would consider talking to Australia’s captain Ricky Ponting when deciding whether to retire or attempt to regain his place in the team.

Liverpool fans slam Milner vs Chelsea

Many Liverpool fans have slammed the performance of James Milner in their game at Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The 35-year-old was run ragged at times in the middle of the park and it was no surprise to see him taken off for Naby Keita just shy of the 70-minute mark.

Milner lost out on five of his duels in total and also failed to record a single shot on goal or successful dribble, while his 65% pass accuracy was one of the worst out of any player on the pitch (SofaScore).

The veteran midfielder also failed to make any accurate crosses or long balls, while he was guilty of losing possession of the ball 10 times and had only 38 touches, 15 fewer than his own goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher (SofaScore), summarising his lack of positive impact on the match.

Scales may have failed Ange’s test

Ange Postecoglou headed into Celtic’s Premiership clash against St. Johnstone on Sunday with a severely limited squad at his disposal as a result of a number of injuries, being left with no other choice than to attempt to fit a number of square pegs in round holes in his starting XI.

Despite this fact, the Bhoys turned in an extremely impressive performance at McDiarmid Park, dominating possession of the ball, taking 25 shots at the St. Johnstone goal and creating four big chances over the course of the 90 minutes, with the Hoops running out 3-1 victors.

However, while Celtic’s overall performance was indeed a decent one, there were nevertheless a number of players within Postecoglou’s side who endured something of an afternoon to forget on Sunday, with centre-back duo Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt, as well as goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas, not enjoying their finest of displays in a green and white shirt.

Although, it was undoubtedly makeshift left wing-back Liam Scales who will be most disappointed with his display against the Saints, as the 23-year-old may well have failed Postecoglou’s test in the position.

Lost possession 21x

While it was far from a truly disastrous display by Scales, the defender nevertheless returned slightly worrying numbers on the left-hand side of the 56-year-old’s backline over his 87 minutes on the pitch.

Indeed, the £90k-rated man won just four of his 10 duels – a failure rate of 60% – failed to find his man with any of his three attempted crosses and completed just one of his two attempted long balls, as well as failing with both of his two attempted dribbles.

The £5k-per-week Irishman also made no clearances, blocked no shots, made just one interception and one tackle, missed one big chance for his side and lost possession of the ball on a whopping 21 occasions.

These returns saw the 23-year-old earn a disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.2, the worst of any Celtic player, including Barkas, to feature in the match on Sunday afternoon.

As such, while Scales is undoubtedly a player who is still finding his feet at Parkhead, the youngster’s performance against St. Johnstone will have not done much to strengthen the argument that he should be starting in the position on a more regular basis going forwards.
