Liverpool fans slam Milner vs Chelsea

Many Liverpool fans have slammed the performance of James Milner in their game at Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The 35-year-old was run ragged at times in the middle of the park and it was no surprise to see him taken off for Naby Keita just shy of the 70-minute mark.

Milner lost out on five of his duels in total and also failed to record a single shot on goal or successful dribble, while his 65% pass accuracy was one of the worst out of any player on the pitch (SofaScore).

The veteran midfielder also failed to make any accurate crosses or long balls, while he was guilty of losing possession of the ball 10 times and had only 38 touches, 15 fewer than his own goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher (SofaScore), summarising his lack of positive impact on the match.

Newcastle reportedly eyeing Steve Cook

An update has emerged on Bournemouth centre-back Steve Cook, regarding interest from Newcastle United…

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, Eddie Howe is considering a January swoop for the experienced defender to come in and bolster his defensive options.

The report claims that he could be an alternative option to Burnley duo James Tarkowski and Ben Mee, with the Cherries defender ‘creeping’ up the Magpies’ transfer wishlist.

Disaster

PIF could be heading for a Newcastle disaster with a deal for the English flop. They must avoid signing Cook in January as he would not be a good addition to the squad, given his struggles and lack of game time this season in the Championship.

He has played four games for Bournemouth in all competitions this season and averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.21 – with the side conceding 11 goals in that time. Six of those goals came in a hammering against Norwich in the League Cup, a game in which Cook was given an abysmal rating of 4.89.

The 30-year-old was managed by the Magpies boss at the Vitality Stadium and played 29 games as they were relegated together in the 2019/20 campaign.

Howe once reportedly locked Cook, and the rest of the Cherries squad, in the dressing room for 30 minutes after a 4-1 loss to, ironically, Newcastle. The defender, who blasted himself and his teammates as “embarrassing’ for their performances in the top-flight, claimed that the team played ‘like kids’. He said:

“Words have been said, players have stepped up and spoken but it is no good unless we do it on the pitch.

“We are men in the dressing room but played like kids.”

So, why should Newcastle be signing a player who previously struggled under Howe in the Premier League and is currently failing to perform in the second tier with Bournemouth?

He has only played three times in the Championship and his average rating of 6.64 in the division does not suggest that he is playing well enough to deserve a move to the top-flight.

Therefore, the £45k-per-week earner would be a disaster of a signing by PIF and Howe as his statistics suggest that he would be a nightmare in the Premier League, given that he is not standing out in a lower standard of football. Newcastle should avoid Cook and look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.

Mominul and Abul help Bangladesh seal series

Two standout performances, from Mominul Haque and Abul Hasan, ensured Bangladesh Under-19 clinched the series against Zimbabwe Under-19 with two games to go

ScorecardTwo standout performances, from Mominul Haque and Abul Hasan, ensured Bangladesh Under-19 clinched the series against Zimbabwe Under-19 with two games to go. While Mominul’s well-compiled half-century ensured Bangladesh finished on a competitive 186, right-arm fast bowler Abul followed up his five-for from the previous match with 4 for 27.Choosing to bat, Bangladesh lost too many wickets despite scoring aggressively, and stuttered to 70 for 5 in the 17th over. But the sixth-wicket stand of 56 between Mominul and Noor Hossain proved to be crucial. Mominul struck seven fours during his 104-ball stay, while Hossain managed four boundaries. The Zimbabweans were under the cosh from the start of the reply as Abul picked up two top-order wickets. Dean Mazhawidza top scored for the visitors with a strong 39, while Natsai Mushangwe threatened at No. 8 with a quickfire 38. But once Abul removed Mushangwe, he followed it up with Simon Mugava’s wicket. Stev Chimhamhiwa’s run-out signalled the end in the 40th over.

Klazinga and van Schoor put Namibia ahead

The third day belonged to Namibia after UAE’s batting lost their way following a solid start to give away a 72-run first-innings lead

Cricinfo staff07-Dec-2009
ScorecardThe third day belonged to Namibia after UAE’s batting lost their way following a solid start to give away a 72-run first-innings lead. Namibia opener Raymond van Schoor then put the game further in Namibia’s favour with a patient 87, which increased the lead to 206 by stumps.UAE started the day at a solid 185 for 3, and the overnight pair of Arfan Haider and Abdul Rehman progressed steadily to 238. Haider had moved to 84 when he was dismissed, sparking a collapse from the lower order – the final seven wickets going down for 59 runs. Medium-pacer Louis Klazinga was the architect of UAE’s downfall; he grabbed a wicket in each of his five overs, starting from the 85th.It was van Schoor’s turn then to press the advantage. He hit five fours and a six in his fifth career half-century to take the lead beyond 200. He was in sight of a century when he fell to left-arm spinner Fayyaz Ahmed with less than three overs to go for stumps.

Newcastle eye double Burnley swoop

Newcastle United are keen on Burnley’s Ben Mee in addition to his centre-back partner James Tarkowski, according to The Mirror’s James Nursey.

The lowdown

Back in October, it was reported that Tarkowski was one of the first targets of the new regime (via The Telegraph), but it has now emerged that Mee, whose contract is also up at the end of the season, is attracting the Magpies’ interest as well.

The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson has previously written that Newcastle’s new owners would focus heavily on players in the final months of their deals.

It should be noted that, in the case of Mee, who is valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt, there is the option for a further year. He has been described as a ‘true leader’ and an ‘underrated’ defender by TV pundit Micah Richards.

The latest

According to The Mirror, Eddie Howe is ‘desperate’ to bring in a new centre-back and likes both players. His former club Burnley are unlikely to let both of them leave, but importantly, Newcastle are in a position to double their wages.

Mee and Tarkowski are the top two earners at Turf Moor, taking home £55,000 and £50,000 per week respectively.

The verdict

As noted by Nursey, there is an added advantage to targeting Burnley players – weakening a likely relegation rival.

Newcastle are shipping an average of two goals per game this season, and the hope would be that Mee and/or Tarkowski could give them a more secure platform for their survival bid. This was a duo which helped Burnley to keep 15 clean sheets in the 2019/20 season – a record bettered only by Manchester City.

Compared to positional peers in the top five leagues, Mee ranks in the 99th percentile for aerial duels won and the 97th for clearances. Based on those figures, he could help Newcastle immeasurably when their backs are against the wall.

Crook four turns Northants day

Northants will have had better days than this. They were not at their best with the ball. The fact that they are still in a strong position speaks volumes of their season to date

Northants will have had better days than this. They were not at their best with the ball and allowed Glamorgan to score 50 more than they should have. The fact that they are still in a strong position speaks volumes of their season to date – one which looks to end in promotion should they capitalise on what, by their standards, was a modest first day.At stumps, Stephen Peters could rest easy knowing his call at the start of the day was vindicated, as a green pitch played honest and true. Both he and James Middlebrook played positively in a 21 over period that saw them score at over four-an-over, with crisp drives and the odd boundary through third man, to leave them unblemished and just 156 runs behind.Northants went into the match with five seamers, inserting the opposition upon winning the toss. But Trent Copeland, in his penultimate game for the county before he heads home for a second and final time this summer, was uncharacteristically wayward, struggling for a consistent line against the left-handed opening pair of Will Bragg and Gareth Rees.Rees looked at ease, particularly against David Willey, as Glamorgan built up a good head of steam, and the only thing the home support had to cheer on was the athleticism of their keeper David Murphy, who was sent tumbling down the leg side on numerous occasions throughout the day; but even he was powerless to stop a wide short-ball from Azharullah that had the members gasping. But Northants showed that when they’re not good they can be lucky, as they demonstrated in an afternoon session that saw six wickets fall.Soon after Murray Goodwin and Chris Cooke brought up their fifty partnership for the third wicket, Cooke looked to have played a short-ball comfortably into the leg-side. Suddenly, Andrew Hall, from first slip, starts cheering and runs up to the stumps at the strikers end, pointing to a grounded bail. It turned out that as Cooke prepared for the back-foot shot, he inadvertently clipped off stump with his bat, much to the bemusement of all in the ground.Just 17 balls later, Willey was the beneficiary of further good fortune. Despite coming around the wicket and swinging the ball into the right-hander, he somehow managed to strangle Goodwin down the leg-side. He then managed to effect the same dismissal with his very next delivery – this time from over the wicket – as Glamorgan’s left-handed skipper Mark Wallace departed for a golden duck. Between the dismissal of Cooke and Wallace, only 17 runs were added. It would be wrong to say that Willey did not deserve his four wickets. His control in his second spell was exceptional and his ability to move the ball in the air and off the seam, at good pace, was exciting to watch.Credit should also go to Steven Crook, who powered through an 11-over spell from the Abington Avenue End to finish with four of his own. Along with Copeland and Azharullah, who recently put pen to paper on a new two-year deal, Crook has been one of the signings of the summer. It is no wonder Middlesex were reluctant to let him leave. You will be hard-pressed to find anyone at Middlesex who would not want him back, and even fewer who begrudge the success he has enjoyed this year.

Starc set to miss Ashes with back injury

Mitchell Starc is unlikely to play in Australia’s home Ashes campaign after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back

Brydon Coverdale09-Sep-2013Mitchell Starc is unlikely to play in Australia’s home Ashes campaign after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back. Starc flew home from the ongoing limited-overs series in England due to back soreness and scans have shown that his injury will rule him out for “a prolonged period”, almost certainly meaning that he will be unavailable for at least the start of the Ashes, if not the whole series.Australia have already suffered similar injury blows in their fast-bowling ranks with James Pattinson sent home from the Ashes tour of England and Pat Cummins ruled out of the coming home summer, both with stress fractures of the lower back. Starc, 23, was Australia’s third leading wicket taker during the unsuccessful Ashes campaign in England with 11 wickets at 32.45, and he would have been a likely starter for the first Test at the Gabba.”Mitch Starc had scans following his arrival back to Australia and they have shown an early stage low back stress fracture,” Justin Paolini, Cricket Australia’s chief medical officer, said. “His management plan will be determined in the coming days but he is expected to be unavailable for a prolonged period.”Pat Howard, CA’s general manager of team performance, said it was disappointing that Starc had succumbed to a stress fracture but that young fast bowlers were particularly susceptible to such injuries. In releasing the details of Starc’s injury, CA stressed that few fast bowlers in Australia’s history had bowled as many deliveries in Test cricket as Starc and Pattinson by the age of 23.Mitchell Starc played three of the five Tests in England•PA Photos

“Historically, we’ve rarely seen three such promising young fast bowlers come through at the same time and all of a similar age so when they get injured of course that will be disappointing,” Howard said. “We’re doing our best to minimise longer term injuries, but we are also realistic that such injuries are possible.”Looking at a comparison of some of Australia’s best quicks at the age of 23, Pattinson and Starc are second and third on the list behind Craig McDermott in terms of performance. What that tells us is we have a greater reliance on younger fast bowlers at international level than ever before and we’re getting the most we can out of these talented young players, who are all coming through into international cricket together.”However, there was some good news for Australia, with Jackson Bird cleared of any major injury concerns after he flew home from the Ashes tour early due to back soreness. Bird, who played only the fourth Test in Durham and collected two wickets, is expected to be available for the start of the home Ashes if required.”Jackson returned home from the tour of England with some lower back soreness,” Paolini said. “We have ruled out a major injury but will review scans in two weeks to confirm this. We expect that he will be available during the Ashes.”
