Hilditch wants Watson to stay flexible

Shane Watson will not be locked in as a long-term Test opener despite performing solidly in the role during the Ashes, according to Australia’s chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch. Watson is the incumbent alongside Simon Katich but Hilditch has declared Phillip Hughes will likely be recalled once back to his best form.Watson replaced the axed Hughes after two Ashes Tests and finished with three half-centuries from five innings. However, despite averaging 48 in the Test opening role, Watson will not be asked to open the batting for New South Wales ahead of Australia’s Test summer. It is possible that the Blues’ Sheffield Shield openers will be Hughes and Phil Jaques, while the current Test openers Watson and Katich could bat down the order. Hilditch believes Watson’s best option is to retain his versatility rather than committing to becoming a specialist opener.”That’s how he got on the Ashes [tour],” Hilditch said. “We saw someone who could bat from one to six, which we wanted on the tour.”I think he’d be well placed to stay pretty flexible. I wouldn’t be saying he should open in Shield cricket even. He’s shown he can go from a lower-order position to opening the batting in the Ashes without too much trouble.”It is unclear who would make way should Watson be bumped down into a middle-order containing Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey and Marcus North. However, the selectors are keen to see Hughes back in the Test side after making the tough call to drop him following two disappointing Ashes Tests.”Phil is a really talented young man,” Hilditch said. “It was a terrible call to have to drop him during the Ashes series. Probably in any other series we would’ve been more supportive of a young player – but we just needed to make a change at that particular moment.”It was a right decision but for him it was very disappointing. Our view is we still see him as part of our future, and we’ll probably look to reintroduce him once he’s back to form.”Australia’s first Test of the summer begins on November 26, against West Indies at the Gabba. However, due to New South Wales’ participation in the Champions League Twenty20, their players will have only two Sheffield Shield matches to prove their form ahead of the first Test.

West Ham weigh up bid for Jonas Wind

As per reliable reporter Jack Rosser of The Evening Standard, some news has emerged on West Ham and their hunt for a new striker.

The Lowdown: West Ham still in the market…

The Irons’ centre-forward pursuit can be stretched all the way back to January, when David Moyes confirmed that offers had been made for Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This is to solve the lack of cover for star striker Michail Antonio, especially taking into account his injury history, and despite the club’s efforts, they still haven’t managed to land an alternative to the Jamaica international.

The search is still on, however, as Rosser brings an update involving FC Copenhagen striker Jonas Wind.

The Latest: West Ham weigh bid…

As per The Evening Standard, West Ham – and by extension head of recruitment Rob Newman – are ‘weighing up a move’ for the prolific Dane, who has bagged a senior career total of 45 goals for his current club.

Indeed, a striker apparently ‘remains high’ on Moyes’ shopping list ahead of January as he looks to maintain the Hammers’ head-turning start to the 2021/22 campaign.

The Verdict: Good option…

Over his appearances for Copenhagen this season, Wind has showcased a real proficiency in front of goal with 10 across all competitions already, along with six assists (Transfermarkt).

He’s also a towering presence at 6 foot 2 and could possess a physicality suited to the tough nature of Premier League football.

In a further incentive for West Ham to move for him, it is believed that the 22-year-old could leave his current club for as little as £11m in January, as recently claimed by Ekstra Bladet (via Sport Witness).

Amid the Irons’ links to Andrea Belotti and Adam Hlozek, Wind could come as a shrewd alternative.

Rangers: Claim made on Van Bronckhorst

An insider claim has emerged on Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, regarding his involvement against Hibernian on Sunday.

What’s the talk?

BT Sport journalist/host Darrell Currie claimed that the Dutchman was able to go and speak to the players and have an input ahead of the clash, but opted against doing so.

He stated that van Bronckhorst’s work permit arrived in time for him to meet the team, in a conversation with Derek McInnes pre-game.

Speaking on Premier Sports 1, via Ibrox news, Currie said:

“I believe he now has his work permit, Derek.

“He’s not going to address the team, I’m told he’s going to stay in the stands.

“Do you think that’s the right decision because officially now, he could go down, say hello, see them? But he’s not going to.”

McInnes simply replied: “It doesn’t really matter if it’s the right decision, it’s his decision.”

Fume

Rangers fans will surely be fuming with this decision from van Bronckhorst after the club ended up losing the game 3-1, failing to make the final against Celtic. It was a flat performance from the Gers and one that could have benefitted from the Dutchman boosting their motivation levels ahead of the match.

Centre-back Connor Goldson admitted after the game that the players needed a spark to improve their displays. He said: “We know that the new manager was here today and you would hope that players would want to impress but after that performance we need a change. We need a spark as I don’t want to say this but I feel that we have lost a bit of hunger.”

Irrespective of whether or not the players should need a spark to play well in a League Cup semi-final, van Bronckhorst could have given the squad an extra lift by speaking to them before the match. Even if it was as little as heading down to the dressing room to give them some encouragement and words of advice, it could have made a difference in the players’ minds.

It was a chance for him to make an immediate, positive, impact on the side. Instead, he watched on from the stands as a disappointing display ensued and Rangers were sent packing from the League Cup, leaving Hibernian and Celtic to battle it out in the final.

This is why Gers fans will be fuming with his decision, as he had an opportunity to go and make a difference but decided not to interfere. This is not a great start to his reign.

Australia have suffered a major blow before their first Champions Trophy match with Nathan Bracken ruled out of the tournament with a chronic knee injury. Cricket Australia confirmed Bracken would be sent home on Thursday. Doug Bollinger, who last represented Australia during the one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE, was named as his replacement.”The nature of Nathan’s right knee problem has meant that he has had some ongoing manageable pain, but this has now reached a point where he is unable to continue playing in the ICC Champions Trophy,” Australia’s physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said. “He will return to Australia to consult a knee specialist for an opinion on the best course of action. His return to cricket will be determined after consulting the specialist.”The loss of Bracken will hurt Australia’s attack as he is the team’s highest-ranked one-day international bowler, sitting sixth on the ICC ODI rankings, ahead of the next Australian Mitchell Johnson in equal ninth. Bracken, who played in the recent one-day series in England, will also be in doubt for the Champions League Twenty20, where he was expected to represent New South Wales in early October.Australia’s first match of the Champions Trophy is against West Indies on Saturday.

Australia call up Tim Paine as cover

Tim Paine, the Tasmania wicketkeeper, has been called up into the Ashes squad as back-up after Graham Manou’s hand injury

Australia are leaving little to chance ahead of this week’s Ashes decider with Tim Paine, the Tasmania wicketkeeper, called into the squad as cover for the injured Graham Manou. While Australia’s first-choice glovesman, Brad Haddin, has been ruled fit to play the fifth Test at The Oval, his understudy, Manou, is still experiencing discomfort from a hand injury sustained during the Edgbaston Test, prompting selectors to call in Paine as a precautionary measure. With Haddin rested and Manou unavailable for the recent tour match against England Lions in Canterbury, Australia called in Chris Hartley, the Queensland wicketkeeper, who had been playing in the Northern Premier League with Chorley. Hartley has now been relieved of his duties, with Paine due to arrive into the UK a week earlier than his one-day squad team-mates.Haddin, who is still nursing a broken finger sustained moments after the coin toss at Edgbaston, played in Australia’s three-day demolition of England at Headingley last week and is expected to present himself for duty at The Oval this week.”Hads will be fine,” said Tim Nielsen, Australia’s coach. “He will more than likely be injected like he was at Headingley but he’ll train today. Graham just isn’t recovering as quickly as we would have liked or as he would have liked, but there’s no concern about Hads’ fitness or position in the team.”

Yarmolenko to be axed in West Ham shake up

It’s hard to find faults within the current West Ham side as they continue to impress and exceed expectations in the Premier League this season, sitting third in the table currently.

However, we do expect David Moyes to be looking to add quality and consistency to his already high functioning side, as he will be keen to keep up with the top four quality of Liverpool and Manchester City, to hopefully achieve a Champions League spot at the end of the season.

That said, Andriy Yarmolenko, who was once dubbed as “special” by his teammate, Declan Rice, has embarked on a poor run form as of late that could easily see the £100k-p/w player benched or worse, axed and moved on completely from the London club, especially if Moyes does well in the January transfer window.

Jesse Lingard is strongly connected with a move back to West Ham in a permanent deal, which will likely push Yarmolenko out of the team, depending on how Moyes decides to use the Manchester United midfielder’s versatility in the attacking third, should he re-join the side in the next few months.

They may receive a helping hand in landing that deal by shifting their offensive dud on in the next few months, a move that could potentially save the club millions when it comes to expending the cash received, rather than having to dig deeper into their current war chest instead.

Yarmolenko’s biggest problem at West Ham is his bad run of injuries which has seen the winger become an unreliable member of the squad. In fact, the Ukrainian has had seven separate incidents of injury or illness over the last three seasons with the East London club, and as a result, has ultimately become a liability for the side.

Moyes could capitalise on an opportunity to sell the winger back to Dynamo Kiev in January or the summer, as their president, Ihor Surkis spoke out to confirm the interest of bringing the player back to his home club, on NV Sport;

“There is no such agreement, but it depends on both parties. If Andriy has a desire, I will gladly give him the opportunity to end his career at his home club. I have great respect for what he did for Dynamo, and I consider him a very decent man.”

West Ham will be hoping to continue their run of fantastic form as the Premier League returns this weekend, as the Hammers travel to the Molineux on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for Yarmolenko, he will probably play a minimal role for that game and beyond.
