Thierry Small could be Saints’ next Bale

It’s no secret that Southampton have unearthed some unbelievable talents through their youth system who have gone on to enjoy incredible careers such as Alan Shearer, Matt Le Tissier, Gareth Bale, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana and Theo Walcott among many others.

In terms of their current senior squad, Southampton have James Ward-Prowse, Jack Stephens, Yan Valery and Nathan Tella to name but a few of their current youth players who have worked their way into the first team.

Looking ahead to the future, it seems as though the club could potentially unearth their next youth star with 17-year-old left-back Thierry Small as their next Bale.

Since joining Southampton from Everton on a three-year professional contract in August, the defender has yet to feature for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side and has instead started with the club’s B team, making three appearances.

The teenager, who has previously been praised by former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti for his innate “quality”, has played twice as a left-back and once in a more advanced role as a left midfielder, showing his versatility at such a young age in a similar way to Bale during his time at the club.

Even though the Welshman ended up leaving Southampton for Tottenham in 2007 after making just 45 senior appearances for the Saints, we feel that Small has the potential to bide his time with the B team for the time being before hopefully breaking into Hasenhuttl’s side to show that he is capable of playing regular senior football on the south coast and demonstrating why the club chose to pursue him in the summer.

Also, with Southampton currently having Romain Perraud as the only fit player in their squad who predominantly plays at left-back, it’s entirely plausible that Small could make his senior debut at some point this season either in a cup game or in the event of an injury crisis.

Either way, even if Small doesn’t end up making his senior debut for the Saints this season, he still has plenty of time to develop and progress with the B team before he’s ready to make the big step up.

Jaques won't give up on Test spot

Phil Jaques will continue to fight to regain his national spot despite suffering a setback in his recovery from a severe back problem

Phil Jaques will continue to fight to regain his national spot despite suffering a setback in his recovery from a severe back problem when he was dropped from Australia’s contract list on Thursday. Jaques has opened in 11 Tests for the team and scored 108 in his last match 11 months ago, but he was cut from the XI in India and returned home for surgery. His comeback began towards the end of the season and did not go well, with him requiring a second operation on his back and Phillip Hughes capturing the vacancy created by Matthew Hayden’s retirement. “It is obviously very disappointing,” he said in the Sydney Morning Herald.”I suppose I have lost my contract because I’ve had injuries this past year. All I want to do is get back on the park. When I am fit and healthy I will put scores on the board, I know that.”Shaun Tait also missed out due to his battle with his body. A long-term hamstring injury kept him out for much of the season and he was passed by a young group of bowlers including Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus.Despite his omission, Tait has been told by Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, that he remains in Australia’s plans. “Shaun’s been quite clearly told he’s very much in the mix for one-day cricket in particular and he’ll be closely considered once he’s back to full fitness,” Hilditch told AAP. “We hope he’s going to play cricket for us in the next 12 months but it’s still a bit uncertain when he’s still not back to full fitness and training, so we’ll just monitor that, how he progresses.”Australia have a hectic schedule over the next year and Hilditch said Tait could return via Australia A. “He took it extremely well, probably because he’s such a great bloke,” Hilditch said. “But underneath all that I’m sure he’s hurting, but I’m also sure he’ll come back strong.”One player who remains in the group is the 34-year-old Brad Hodge, a regular reserve who has played one Test in three years. “As he’d point out, the last opportunity he got, which was in the West Indies he scored 60-odd runs and played a good role,” Hilditch said in the .”He’s one player if he got the chance, we are pretty sure he’d do really well but we’ve got other young players around the country that would also grab the chance, so it’s a tight call.” The Ashes squad, which will contain 15 or 16 players, will be named on Wednesday.

Speaking to Wett Freunde, journalist Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports has made an exciting Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Lowdown: Rudiger future up in the air…

One of the major talking points at Stamford Bridge right now is the future of the Germany international who still hasn’t put pen to paper on a new Chelsea deal.

Reports out of his homeland even suggest Rudiger is frustrated with the lack of effort going into tying him down as Spurs become linked with potentially signing him.

Sharing an update on Tottenham’s pursuit, Di Marzio has now made an exciting claim.

The Latest: Di Marzio drops exciting Rudiger claim…

Speaking to Wett Freunde, the reliable transfer reporter has revealed that Rudiger is currently in talks with Tottenham, Paris-Saint Germain, Juventus and Man City as he decides his next destination.

It appears Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has now taken a keen interest in snapping up the Champions League winner and Di Marzio believes he ‘will’ join one of the four named teams.

“Rüdiger is in talks with Juventus, Man City, Tottenham and even PSG who still need a defender,” he explained.

“It’s difficult for him to sign a new contract. He will join one of the 4 named teams.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

While Spurs signed a more-than capable centre-half in the summer, bringing in Serie A MVP award-winner Cristian Romero, it is debatable whether he has a truly world class partner.

Davinson Sanchez has shown his capability and performed well so far this season but a move for Rudiger, who Rio Ferdinand called ‘phenomenal’ for his Chelsea displays, could be too good to turn down, becoming a formidable pairing alongside the Lilywhites’ impressive Argentinian.

Celtic dealt Juranovic injury blow

Celtic have been dealt a blow regarding the fitness of Josip Juranovic ahead of the Hoops’ upcoming Scottish Premiership clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Football Scotland, the right-back could be set to miss the Bhoys’ trip to Fir Park on Saturday afternoon, as he has not fully recovered from a hamstring injury suffered in Celtic’s draw with Dundee United back in September.

Ange Postecoglou had previously stated that he hoped his summer signing would be in line for a return to first-team action immediately after the international break, however, it would appear as if the Croatia international may now be forced to sit out one further fixture as a result of his injury.

Ange will be gutted

While Anthony Ralston has highly impressed while filling in for Juranovic at right-back this season – with the 22-year-old having scored two goals, registered one assist and averaged a SofaScore match rating of 7.75 over his six Scottish Premiership appearances – the news that one of Celtic’s most exciting new additions is set to miss out on yet another fixture is nevertheless sure to have left Postecoglou gutted.

Indeed, the £2.25m-rated man had started his career at Parkhead in excellent form, helping his side keep one clean sheet, as well as making an average of one interception, two tackles, 1.3 clearances and winning 3.3 duels over his four Scottish Premiership appearances.

These returns had seen the 26-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 7.00, an extremely impressive feat considering half of his league appearances this season have come at left-back.

As such, the fact that Postecoglou once again looks unlikely to be able to call upon the defender this weekend is sure to dent Celtic’s chances of picking up a positive result against Motherwell – something that the 56-year-old Hoops manager will be desperate for considering his side’s unconvincing away form so far in 2021/22.
