Owais Shah has been named in Middlesex’s Champions League squad, but there is no place for Andrew Strauss which confirms he will be on England duty. The same could still apply to Shah and a decision on his availability won’t be made until after the one-day series against India has finished on December 2. If he isn’t selected for the three-day Test warm-up in Baroda he will join up with Middlesex, but Shah has said that England comes first.”I want to play Test cricket, that is my first aim, and if I am not involved in that three-day game then there is an option for me to go rather than carry drinks,” he said. “That is the only scenario where I would go and play in the Champions League but if I’m selected for the three-day game I will play in that and try and put my name in the hat for the Test match.”Nick Compton, who was rumoured to be leaving Middlesex, is named in the 15-man squad which is led by Shaun Udal. They are flying out to India on Thursday and are paying their own way for two days in order to gain as much practice as possible for the tournament which starts on December 3.Squad Shaun Udal (capt), Alan Richardson, Ben Scott, Billy Godleman, David Nash, Dawid Malan, Ed Joyce, Eoin Morgan, Gareth Berg, Murali Kartik, Nick Compton, Owais Shah, Steven Finn, Tim Murtagh, Tyron Henderson

Watford considering Bryan deal

An update has emerged on defender Kean Bryan, regarding Watford’s prior interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Birmingham Mail, Watford were one of the sides considering a move for defender Kean Bryan on a free transfer this summer.

The report claims that The Hornets, along with Burnley and Swansea City, looked into a potential deal for the ex-Sheffield United man before opting against signing him. Bryan’s future has now been resolved as he has signed a contract with Championship side West Brom.

Nightmare avoided

Watford boss Xisco Munoz avoided a nightmare by opting against a deal for Bryan this summer. The head coach made the right call by deciding not to offer the versatile player a contract as he would not have been a good signing for a club in the Premier League.

Bryan made 13 appearances, including 12 starts, in the Premier League for the Blades last season as they were relegated from the top-flight with a whimper. He averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.51, which shows that he was not able to perform with a high degree of quality, consistently, during the campaign.

The 24-year-old scored one own goal and was dribbled past 10 times in 13 games. This suggests that it was too easy for players to beat him in one-on-one duels in the Premier League, so he was not at the level required to defend against top-flight forwards.

In terms of experience, the £3k-per-week dud is severely lacking considering his age. He has only played 64 senior league matches in his career, with 50 of them coming for Bury and Oldham in League One prior to his spell with Sheffield United in the Premier League.

This means that Watford would have been signing a player coming off the back of a poor season who has next-to-no experience and little in the way of a portfolio of performances to suggest that he can turn things around.

Therefore, it would have been a disaster to bring him to Vicarage Road for the season, even on a free transfer.

Fans will be delighted that Xisco ultimately decided against the deal, with it being telling that a Championship side is where he has ended up going.

It will be interesting to see if he has a strong campaign for the Baggies in the second-tier, but based on the evidence available, Watford are unlikely to regret their decision any time soon.

Spinners help Leewards prevail in low scorer

A round-up of the matches on day four of the WICB Cup

Cricinfo staff18-Nov-2008Leeward Islands prevailed in a low-scoring encounter at West Coast Demerara against Barbados, thanks to a four-wicket haul by Omari Banks, the former West Indies offspinner. The top orders of both teams struggled to come to terms with a slow, two-paced track but the turning point was the stubborn lower order resistance by Leewards which lifted them from 66 for 6 to 172. Spinners Anthony Martin and Justin Athanaze supported Banks as Barbados crashed to 110.Barbados held the initiative after sending Leewards in to bat but struggled to mop up the lower order. Gavin Tonge and Orlando Peters added 44 for the seventh wicket while Athanaze and Chad Hampson added 54 for the eighth to frustrate the opposition. With 173 to defend, the Leewards captain introduced Banks early and the move paid off as Barbados wobbled to 19 for 4. Only three players managed double figures, with Dwayne Smith top scoring with 32. Impetuous shot selection and impressive bowling by the spinners combined to sink the middle order and Barbados failed to show any resistance after the main batsmen were back in the pavilion. The 62-run win sparked off joyous celebrations and Leewards now sit on top of the table with T&T with 11 points. It was a complete demolition job at Bourda as Canada crashed to 104 and lost by nine wickets against Jamaica. Seamer Andrew Richardson led Jamaica’s inspired effort by taking 4 for 36 after the opposition captain Sunil Dhaniram chose to bat. Canada were sent packing half an hour before lunch and Jamaica, needed just 21 overs to get home.Canada’s openers began steadily by adding 25. However, Richardson started the slide when he had Abdool Samad and Qaiser Ali caught behind by Keith Hibbert of successive deliveries. Hibbert, the wicketkeeper, had an excellent match with six catches, including three off the bowling of Richardson, who managed a lot of lateral movement. Only Dhaniram offered some resistance, top scoring with 24. The spinners Bevon Brown and Grant Wallace took two wickets apiece as to bundle out Canada in the 37th over. Parchment (50*) and Bernard (40) shared an unbeaten stand of 81 to help Jamaica gain two bonus points.Half-centuries by Daren Ganga and Adrian Barath helped Trinidad and Tobago to a comfortable six-wicket win over United States of America at Enmore. Richard Kelly, the seamer, took 3 for 34 to restrict USA to a modest 186 for 7 before T&T chased the target in 38 overs and picked up a bonus point.Carl Wright, the Jamaica-born left-hander, top scored for USA with 90 but lacked support and was the only player to cross fifty. His 121-ball knock included six fours and three sixes. Kelly took three middle-order wickets and he was supported by Rayad Emrit and Samuel Badree who took two wickets apiece. In reply, Barath and Ganga added 139 for the second wicket to help T&T home. Barath brought up his fifty off 66 deliveries, while Ganga’s half-century came off 56 balls. Barath was caught at wide mid-on by Imran Awan off Aditya Thyagarajan, and his 82-ball knock included four fours and a six. Ganga’s 79 came off 89 balls and included five fours.

Everton fans don’t want Serge Aurier

Many Everton fans do not want the club to sign Serge Aurier after they were linked with a move for the now out-of-contract right-back.

The Toffees were busy on the final day of the transfer window, bringing in Salomon Rondon from Dalian Professional. However, many Toffees supporters may well have wanted a new player for the right side of defence given Seamus Coleman’s injury problems.

They have started the season well, winning two and drawing one of their three Premier League matches (Sky Sports), but with the 32-year-old right-back picking up an issue while on Ireland duty, Rafael Benitez may have a problem.

The Merseyside club have been linked with a move (The Daily Express) for £18m-valued Aurier (Transfermarkt), now a free agent after leaving Tottenham, but even though he is available, a number of Everton supporters do not seem to want him.

It appears they are not convinced by him after his spell at Spurs, during which Jamie Carragher labelled him “one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football”.

The news has been doing the rounds on Twitter, and it has attracted plenty of attention from Everton supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these Everton fans had to say about the Aurier link

“Seeing the odd post about Aurier… He is awful and wouldn’t be low wages, NO THANKS”

“Game of opinions but I think he is awful. Can’t cross, can’t defend. He’s a liability. If we play a back 3 I’d have Townsend as the wing back”

“I know we’re desperate for a RB but have you seen Aurier? Like really actually watched him? I’d honestly rather have Kenny.”

“Aurier? When was the last time a club thought so little of a player who cost millions to buy that they happily terminated his contract by mutual consent? He’s awful. Kenny and Holgate are better options at RB in a flat back 4, especially with Townsend in front of them in a 442.”

Nielsen backs aggressive tactics

Australia employed an unsuccessful, wild approach in their second innings because it was the only way the batsmen thought they could survive, said coach Tim Nielsen

Australia employed an unsuccessful, wild approach in their second innings because it was the only way the batsmen thought they could survive, said coach Tim Nielsen. After being set a victory target of 516, Australia were reduced to 58 for 5 on the fourth afternoon after openers Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich smashed their way to 49 in 7.2 overs.Hayden signalled the tourists’ intent by charging the first ball of the innings, but the momentum swung quickly when offspinner Harbhajan Singh picked up both openers in the over before tea. “Whatever India made,” Nielsen said, “we thought that to be successful we had to have the mindset to chase it down.”Trying to bat for nine or ten hours and just saving your wicket, or defending against the quality of the bowlers they have, makes it very difficult. Our challenge was to put pressure down by scoring runs and knocking the bowlers off their length.”The risky move failed badly and Australia now has only five wickets remaining after finishing at 141 for 5. The visitors still need 375 for victory or to bat for 90 overs to secure a draw.”We had some success for a short time, but unfortunately we weren’t quite able to get through,” Nielsen said. “We lost two wickets in an over and the wind certainly went out of our sails.”Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin stabilised the previously frenetic situation in an 83-run stand, with Clarke unbeaten on 42 and Haddin on 37. Nielsen retained faith that the pair could negotiate the final day.”There’s a fair bit of water to go under the bridge tomorrow,” he said. “They’ve played well for the last hour and a half, and they can get a start tomorrow India will need to bowl very well.”Nielsen refused to point fingers at his under-performing players despite seeing them dominated throughout the first four days of the test. “We’re aware we’ve been behind the eight-ball for much of this game,” he said. “We’re working hard to get through this game and then after that we’ll have some time to sit back and have a bit of a think about what we’re doing and how we can do it better.”One major area of concern is the performance of bowling spearhead Brett Lee, who has failed to penetrate on the Indian pitches over the first two games. Ricky Ponting did not use Lee until after lunch on the fourth day, when he picked up Sourav Ganguly for 27, finishing with 1 for 61 off 14 overs.”It’s certainly not an indictment of how poor he’s bowled,” Nielsen said of delaying Lee’s entry. “He hasn’t got the results he would like, but has had some decent spells at times. “It’s probably indicative of our whole tour at the moment. We can’t quite put the pressure we need for extended periods.”
