In the late 1990s it looked as if Canada was set to become North America’s home for visiting international sides. A large, primarily Asian, expat audience turned up in big numbers to a succession of tournaments, usually held in September.The presence of India and Pakistan was crucial to the viability of the ventures, but as the political tension between the two escalated, the cricket sides became caught up and eventually India were forced by their government to pull out rather than face Pakistan. Without the prime draw, interest waned and the Toronto project was doomed. Soon after, the whole match-fixing saga broke and offshore venues for matches lost their appeal as the authorities looked to clamp down on bookmakers’ opportunities.But nine years later on, and Toronto is again hosting major cricket. Some would argue it’s too late in the year – early-morning temperatures struggle to hit 50 degrees – but with the international calendar jam-packed, you take what window you can get.The event has been made possible by substantial sponsorship by a Dubai-based company. However, the build-up has been anything but ideal. West Indies were on the original cast list, along with Canada, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but they pulled out as their board signed a deal to make all their players available to Allen Stanford. They were replaced by Zimbabwe, hardly an A – or even B-list – attraction.Promotion has been scratchy, not helped by rumbling uncertainty over the visa positions for two of the visitors. As late as Monday, both Pakistan and Zimbabwe were reported to be having difficulties. In the event, both made it, albeit with little time to spare.Temporary stands, accommodating up to 10,000, have been built in recent weeks, and the organisers have been bullish in their predictions of the turnout. In the event, there were never more than 1300 inside the ground today, with the bigger audience for the Pakistan match. The earlier game was not so attractive, either in terms of teams or time. The 9.30am start on a chilly autumn morning doesn’t appeal to many.The ground looks pretty good, the replay screens are big and the sightscreens impress. Oh, and given that a picture is worth a thousand words, someone might have thought to ensure that there were photographers on the ground who would feed the world’s media.The hope is that the weekend will bring much bigger crowds, and talk is that when Sri Lanka play Pakistan tomorrow at 1.30pm in what should be a dress rehearsal for the final, there will be several thousand inside the hastily-constructed ground.Despite the glitches and grumbles, just getting top cricket to Canada is an achievement, and the organisers deserve credit for that. What they now need is three days of good weather, more spectators and some great cricket.

O América-MG entra em campo nesta sexta-feira para enfrentar o Paysandu, no Independência, às 19h15, pela 4ª Rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro da Série B. Embora a disputa pelo acesso tenha apenas começado, o elenco do clube mineiro já conta com um campeão, mas nada a ver com o futebol e sim com o poker. É o caso do atacante Hugo Cabral, que há duas semanas venceu um torneio do chamado ‘esporte da mente’.

Para alcançar esse êxito raro para brasileiros, o jogador, que atuou pelo Osasco Audax no Paulistão deste ano, se inscreveu em uma das versões do SCOOP (Spring Championship of Online Poker), competição de poker online que teve quase 6.700 inscritos na disputa pelo prêmio de $ 64.491, aproximadamente R$ 210 mil. Hugo pagou $ 109 (por volta de R$ 350) pela inscrição, bateu os adversários em uma jornada que durou quase sete horas e levou a bolada para casa.

Além disso, o atacante de 28 anos saiu do banco de reservas e fez grande partida na última rodada da Série B, quando o América-MG venceu o Criciúma, de virada, por 3 a 1, com participação direta de Hugo em dois gols.

– Foi uma semana abençoada. Pude ganhar o SCOOP, foi muito legal, não só pelo dinheiro, mas eu já jogo há bastante tempo, é um torneio muito difícil de conquistar, poucos brasileiros conseguiram títulos nesse torneio, então fico feliz, algo que muitos cobiçam, sonham com ele. Conseguimos também uma vitória fora de casa com o América, foi uma semana perfeita – afirmou o campeão em entrevista ao LANCE!.

Hugo não jogava e não gostava de poker até o ano de 2014, quando estava no Joinville e foi induzido por quatro colegas de clube a começar a praticar o jogo de cartas que hoje é febre entre os boleiros. Antes, a participação era só para completar a mesa dos mais experientes, mas não demorou muito para o cenário mudar.

– Não tinha vontade de jogar, só jogava outros jogos de carta, mas eles só jogavam poker. Aí eram só quatro que jogavam e para o jogo ficar bom, eles precisavam de mais um, pelo menos. Eles ficavam me perturbando para jogar, foram me ensinando as regras, fui gostando e comecei a me interessar. Logo depois de eles me ensinarem, em um mês eu já estava tirando dinheiro deles. Mas até aprender, eu perdi bastante dinheiro para os caras (risos) – contou.

Apesar do sucesso na empreitada, o atacante do Coelho pretende continuar levando o esporte da mente apenas como um hobby, mas garantiu participação em outros torneios online sempre que houver um tempo livre em sua carreira futebolística, a prioridade do atleta.

– Estou sempre jogando, sempre quando tenho um tempo vago eu jogo, mas encarando desse jeito, para se divertir, descontrair, sem aquela pressão de ter que ganhar, de que ter que fazer daquilo um sustento, do mesmo jeito que eu comecei a jogar, nas horas vagas. Às vezes a gente fica uns dias sem jogar, por causa do futebol, da família, tem jogo… Mas sempre quando tenho uma brecha, vou jogar – disse Hugo antes de colocar em primeiro lugar seus objetivos com o América-MG:

– Quero colocar o América na Séria A, brigar pelo título da Série B, mas o objetivo maior, sem dúvidas é buscar o acesso. Além de poder fazer um bom campeonato, melhor do que eu fiz pelo Luverdense no ano passado, e chegar ao fim do ano podendo sorrir e ver o que Deus vai reservar para a gente – garantiu.

Como jogador de poker ele se comparou com seu estilo de jogo dentro de campo. Ousado, rápido nas decisões e sem medo de arriscar. No entanto ele não fará apostas com o dinheiro que embolsou no torneio.

– Estou planejando comprar um apartamento, uma casa, porque deu uma clareada, né? Foi coisa de Deus mesmo. Quero comprar para morar mesmo, já tenho uma casa, mas vamos ver – finalizou.

BATE-BOLA HUGO, ATACANTE DO AMÉRICA-MG E JOGADOR DE POKER NAS HORAS VAGAS

Como funcionou a sua participação nesse torneio?
Foi um torneio para quase sete mil pessoas, 6.700 inscritos, foi num domingo, mais ou menos sete horas de competição, jogadores do mundo todo, profissionais do poker, muita gente boa e a gente conseguiu bater todo mundo e levar o título. Já venho jogando poker online há algum tempo, um ano meio, dois anos e venho conseguindo bons resultados. É algo que me ajuda bastante, é bem parecido com o futebol, me ajuda a relaxar bastante nas horas vagas, me ajuda a concentrar, passar o tempo, e ainda tem a parte financeira que ajuda demais (risos).

Isso é o que te dá mais motivação, né?
Com certeza, tudo o que envolve dinheiro traz uma adrenalina, um retorno que compensa bastante, mas é só hobby mesmo, não tenho pretensão de ser jogador profissional de poker, só hobby, meu foco total é no futebol e nas horas vagas quando der para brincar a gente brinca.

Brincar com esse dinheiro é bacana…
É, mas o pessoal só vê quando ganha, quando não ganha ninguém vê (risos)

Você disse que o poker te ajuda no futebol. E o que o futebol te ajuda no poker?
Acho que o meu estilo, que é ofensivo, minha agressividade dentro de campo, de ir para cima, de ser incisivo, de ser decisivo, de ir para o drible, acho que eu levo isso para o poker, sou meio agressivo, preciso tomar decisões rápidas.

Pretende seguir no poker após se aposentar como jogador de futebol?
É diferente você jogar por hobby, brincar, outra coisa é você viver, ser profissional disso. Tenho alguns amigos que são profissionais e é algo que desgasta muito a pessoa, tem que ter bastante tempo, se dedicar bastante, tanto quanto o futebol, mas no poker é jogo em cima de jogo, demanda muito tempo. Então quando eu parar, o máximo que eu penso é investir no poker, porque tem muita gente investindo, tem muitos times de poker, e traz um retorno muito bom. Nisso penso bastante, mas antes tenho que ganhar esse dinheiro para investir. (risos)

Como você entrou nesse universo do poker?
No poker eu comecei em 2014, faz uns três anos que eu jogo, mas é de um ano meio ou dois anos que eu comecei a pegar mais, eu digo de jogar mais, porque eu sempre joguei em casa de poker, mas comecei a levar um pouco mais a sério o jogo, além de ser só uma brincadeira, uma diversão, mas procurar ter um retorno e ganhar em cima disso.

Nunca te repreenderam por jogar cartas na concentração, seja online ou com outros jogadores?
Hoje em dia não, mas antes de eu começar a jogar eu lia algumas coisas e via que tinha uma repercussão meio negativa, muita gente não gostava de mostrar, diziam que era jogo de azar, que não era uma coisa legal… Só que foi passando o tempo e hoje já foi comprovado que é o esporte da mente, muitas pessoas já veem de outra forma, já profissionalizou, muitas pessoas já vivem disso, ganham seu sustento jogando, já foi comprovado que não é um jogo de azar, então o poker vem crescendo muito no Brasil, demais mesmo, muitas pessoas já aceitam, a minoria ainda não aceita, mas nos clubes muita gente já joga, até membros da comissão técnica. Esse conceito tem mudado, vai crescer muito mais e eu espero estar no meio disso tudo.

Como tem sido o seu início no América-MG?
Tem sido tranquilo, cheguei aqui vai fazer um mês, graças a Deus fui bem recebido por todos, pela diretoria, pelos jogadores, pela comissão técnica, estou bem à vontade, bem tranquilo. Estou buscando meu espaço em grupo bastante qualificado, com muitos jogadores de qualidade, vai brigar pelo acesso, com uma responsabilidade muito grande. Estou tentando mostrar nos treinamentos e nas oportunidades que venho tendo nos jogos, para buscar a titularidade.

No último jogo, contra o Criciúma, você foi muito bem…
Isso! Tive a oportunidade de entrar no fim, quando o jogo ainda estava empatado, pude ajudar, importante para a equipe buscar a vitória em um jogo difícil contra o Criciúma, sempre difícil jogar lá contra eles, mas graças a Deus fui feliz e pude dar minha contribuição para o América sair com a vitória.

Foi um cartão de visitas para a comissão técnica e para a torcida do América…
O objetivo é esse, aproveitar as oportunidades, para ter mais chances, e buscar mais espaço na equipe. Estou focado para, na próxima oportunidade, se o professor solicitar de novo, estar pronto para ajudar o time.

O que te fez optar por jogar no América?
Eu tive muitas propostas da Série B. No ano passado fiz um bom campeonato com o Luverdense e pintou proposta de uns dez clubes. Eu optei pelo América não só pela estrutura, que eu já tinha ouvido falar, uma condição de trabalho muito boa, um clube sério, que paga em dia, mas também pelo projeto, que é voltar para a Série A do Brasileiro, se você for ver o América está entre os cinco maiores favoritos a subir e a brigar pelo título.

وأشار إلى أن هذه الخطوة تأتي في إطار توجيهات مجلس الإدارة برئاسة محمود الخطيب، لتوفير الاستقرار والأجواء اللازمة لاستمرار مسيرة البطولات من خلال توفير عقود طويلة مع المدربين الذين حققوا نجاحات ملموسة.

The county season is set for a thrilling finale over the next four days and although Nottinghamshire – at home against Hampshire – are in pole position, any slip-ups could open the door for another side to sneak through.The extraordinarily tight nature of the table is partly due to the wet summer that has finally abated in time for the final two rounds of matches. Teams have been so bunched together that one win or defeat has sent them rocketing either up or down the standings. The perfect example was last week’s match between Lancashire and Kent when Kent’s defeat sent them from Championship hopefuls to relegation candidates.Whoever wins the Championship this season will need to win their final match to do so, and that can only be a good thing. Safety-first cricket has been an issue in county cricket for some time, especially when teams have found themselves building a lead at the top of the table. If Somerset nip in for the crown they will have done it with the lowest percentage of wins in history – just four victories from 16 matches. No-one, though, can afford to take a backward step this time.”As professional cricketers, this is the type of game that you want to be involved in and we will approach it with clear minds,” said Ashwell Prince, who will line-up for Nottinghamshire. “We’ve got four seamers, right and left-hand spinners and we bat very deep so the balance of the side couldn’t be any better.”The pitches will play a key role. It was supposed to be a season full of fresh hope and optimism for Crystal Palace supporters, but after only three games of the 2020/21 campaign, an all too familiar concern has already reappeared.

What’s the story?

Former Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira succeeded Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park over the summer after four years of pragmatism under the Englishman’s reign.

His arrival saw the beginning of a new chapter in south London, one that promised to move away from their previously mundane existence in the Premier League, to one full of excitement, goals and entertainment.

However, it’s been anything but. An opening-day 3-0 defeat in the Premier League by Chelsea has been followed up by a goalless draw with Brentford before they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup 1-0 by Watford on Tuesday evening.

Although conclusions cannot be drawn after only 270 minutes of action, it’s clear Vieira is going to need some attacking reinforcements before the transfer window shuts.

Three blanks in a row to kickstart the new era is not the beginning anyone had planned at Palace, but the solution could be a relatively simple one.

Crystal Palace fans would love him

Several strikers have been linked with a move to Selhurst Park in the current window, including Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah, who now appears to be the capital club’s number one priority.

A recent report on Sky Sports claimed the two Premier League sides were someway apart in their valuation of the player, though, with the Gunners putting a £20m price tag on their academy graduate.

Although that figure may seem steep for a player who is yet to start over seven top-flight fixtures in a single campaign, his arrival could be vital if Vieira is to successfully implement his plans and not fall foul to the same obstacles that saw Frank de Boer last just 77 days in the Palace dugout.

Upon his arrival, the former Nice boss outlined his intentions to get the Eagles playing a vibrant brand of football built on possession, something the club’s supporters haven’t witnessed in many years.

“My hope is to get the best of the players,” Vieira said. “What I really want is to put a philosophy in place that my players understand really well so that when they go on the field they can express themselves.

“Because there is talent, and my responsibility will be to make that talent work well together. I want to see a team who is on the front foot.“I want the team to score more goals, to have more shots on target than we used to, but at the same time to keep this kind of mental strength that the team has created in the last couple of years – to become even stronger.“I have a really good idea about the team that we have. I think what we will need is to bring players who can create chances; players who can score goals,” the Frenchman concluded.

But Vieira needs to be backed in the transfer market if he’s going to fulfill his ambitious plans. The defensive acquisitions have provided a solid base to build from, and now chairman Steve Parish must sanction a move for Nketiah to provide the finishing touches.

The highly-rated former England Under-21 international was labelled “extraordinary” by current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, and the Palace supporters would surely love to see him swap north for south London this summer.

Destes seis nomes, o mais próximo de entrar em campo é Giovanni Augusto, que trabalhou praticamente sem restrições no treino coletivo dos reservas e tem boas chances de ser relacionado para o clássico de sábado, contra o Santos, pela quarta rodada do Brasileirão.

Vilson – Submetido a uma artroscopia no joelho esquerdo ainda em março antes mesmo de estrear na temporada, o zagueiro está perto de retornar aos trabalhos com o resto dos companheiros. Ele já realiza transição para o campo acompanhado por fisioterapeutas e preparadores físicos e trabalha com bola. A tendência é que vire opção a Carille depois do jogo contra o Santos.

Balbuena – Sofreu lesão muscular na coxa direita na partida contra o Vitória, identificada pelo Corinthians como de grau um, o mais baixo entre as classificações. O departamento médico não estipulou data, mas acreditava-se em torno de um mês fora. Após uma semana, o jogador já evoluiu o tratamento, mas ainda não foi a campo.

Léo Príncipe – Sofreu estiramento muscular na coxa esquerda na partida contra a Universidad de Chile, em 10 de maio, e a recuperação podia chegar a até um mês e meio. Segue em tratamento no CT e até o momento ainda não iniciou transição para o campo.

Mantuan – Volante promovido da base em janeiro passou por uma cirurgia no joelho esquerdo no último dia 12, com expectativa de retorno aos treinos no prazo entre 40 e 50 dias. Continua neste estágio de recuperação.

Danilo – Nesta terça-feira, o meia completa exatos nove meses sem atuar pelo Corinthians, desde que sofreu sérias fraturas na tíbia e na fíbula da perna direita durante um treinamento do ano passado. Ele vinha realizando trabalhos em campo para acelerar a transição, mas nos últimos dias voltou a fazer fortalecimento na academia. Clube trata a recuperação com cautela por conta do longo período de inatividade. Ainda não há previsão para voltar a jogar.

Giovanni Augusto – Sofreu lesão no tornozelo esquerdo na partida contra o Internacional pela Copa do Brasil, com expectativa de retorno em três meses. No entanto, velocidade de reação ao tratamento surpreendeu, e o meia já trabalha com poucas restrições no CT. Pode até voltar a aparecer entre os relacionados contra o Santos.

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to plotting a raid on one of the Premier League's recently relegated sides, amid claims that Leeds United's Jack Harrison is a potential target ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the Lilywhites are believed to be keen to revive their interest in the Englishman ahead of next season, with Daniel Levy and co having previously been linked with the 26-year-old last summer.

As the report noted, the one-time New York City FC man is set to be available at a 'discounted price' following Leeds' drop into the Championship, with talkSPORT stating that the winger has a relegation clause in his contract which will allow him to leave on the cheap.

The former Manchester City asset – who only signed a new deal with the Elland Road outfit back in early April – was previously the subject of a £20m bid from Leicester City during the winter window.

Would Harrison be a good signing for Tottenham?

There may not be too much excitement among Spurs supporters at the prospect of Levy signing a player who has only just been relegated, although Harrison did at least enjoy a positive campaign on an individual note, bagging five goals and seven assists in 35 league games.

Also hailed as a "revelation" by Lampard during their time together in the United States, Harrison is evidently a player of real talent, with the forward's arrival potentially set to prove a dream addition for current Spurs talisman, Harry Kane.

While the latter man can seemingly deliver the goods on his own having scored 30 league goals this season as part of a struggling side, the 29-year-old may benefit from the capture of a clinical and creative force such as Harrison.

The former England U21 international has proven himself able to provide quality service for his teammates after creating nine 'big chances' in the 2022/23 season, with that more than what both Heung-min Son (eight) and Dejan Kulusevski (seven) achieved for the Lilywhites.

That quality from the flanks was evident in the early season win over Chelsea for Leeds, with Harrison having teed up teammate Rodrigo to score with an "absolutely magnificent" set-piece delivery, as per Sky Sports pundit, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Such brilliance could well have Kane licking his lips at the prospect of being supplied even more frequently next season, with such a partnership potentially set to blossom at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
