Frank 'intent' on signing £70m forward as Tottenham dealt crushing Semenyo blow

Under-fire Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is personally very keen on signing one marquee forward amid a major setback surrounding their chase for Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo.

Thomas Frank under pressure amid woeful Spurs run

Frank finds himself navigating treacherous waters at Tottenham right now, with mounting pressure threatening his managerial position following a dismal run.

The Dane has overseen just one victory from Tottenham’s last seven fixtures across all competitions, culminating in Saturday’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Fulham.

Spurs’ abject home form compounds their misery right now with just three wins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2025, and only bottom-side Wolves have a worse record on their own patch this season.

Particularly alarming are whispers from within the Tottenham dressing room, where players have reportedly grown bewildered by Frank’s constant tactical tinkering.

Some media sources believe that strategies are frequently modified immediately before kickoff or abandoned entirely during matches, leaving squad members confused about their responsibilities (Jack Rosser).

Tottenham have also conceded eleven goals in their last three games, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s unbelievable error gifting Harry Wilson Fulham’s winning goal last weekend.

Frank’s relationship with supporters has also reached boiling point following his criticism of fans who booed Vicario’s mistake, and carried on jeering the Italian almost every time he touched the ball afterwards.

It wasn’t really the best move by Spurs’ boss to add fuel to the fire, considering his popularity was already waning among a lot of supporters, who are also extremely keen for co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange to hire a new manager.

Tottenham could prove 'irresistible' to manager who Levy was urged to hire before Frank

Even more worryingly for the north Londoners, credible reports suggest that players feel a ‘growing disconnect’ with the fanbase (The Telegraph), and this quite simply must cease if Tottenham stand any chance of building upon their Europa League triumph in May.

Spurs’ lack of attacking creativity has been subject to plenty of debate too, but the Lewis family are apparently looking to back Frank in January and provide him with major forward upgrades.

It is believed that both FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, who’s been on fire for the last two seasons, and Premier League superstar Semenyo are both on Spurs’ radar heading into next month.

Frank 'intent' on signing Aghehowa as Spurs dealt Semenyo blow

The latter’s contract includes a tantalising £65 million release clause, including add-ons, which will be active in the early stages of January.

Of course, this has piqued real interest from Spurs, with the prospect of Mohammed Kudus on the right and Semenyo on the left coming as a very enticing thought.

However, as per TEAMtalk, Paratici and Lange have now been dealt a crushing blow in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.

The Lilywhites, Man City, Liverpool and Man United are all competing to sign Semenyo in January, but Pep Guardiola’s City side are now casting doubt over a potential move to N17.

This is because they are now the prime contenders with Semenyo ‘keen to engage’ in City talks, dealing Spurs a roadblock and making them outside contenders for his signature.

That being said, Frank personally remains ‘intent’ on signing Aghehowa for Spurs, and there is every reason to believe the Spaniard would be a serious improvement on their centre-forward options.

The 21-year-old has bagged 37 goals in all competitions since the start of 24/25, making him one of Europe’s most lethal strikers right now, but Tottenham will need to fork out around £70 million to make the deal happen.

This would be a club-record deal for Spurs, eclipsing the £65 million they paid for the injury-prone Dominic Solanke last year.

Solanke’s unavailability, concerns surrounding Richarlison and Mathys Tel’s rawness emphasise the need for a new number nine, especially considering Randal Kolo Muani is only at Tottenham on a straight loan.

In terms of pedigree and potential, you could hardly do better than Aghehowa, who’s already been compared to a prime Diego Costa.

New Dodgers Pitcher Roki Sasaki Announces Exciting Personal News in Spring Training

Roki Sasaki took the mound for the first time as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday as he threw live batting practice to some of his new teammates. The 23-year old's fastball and slider were reportedly on full display as he began a new chapter of his baseball life.

On Friday morning the Dodgers rookie announced that he was also beginning a new chapter of his personal life. In an Instagram post with a picture of two Dodgers hats Sasaki announced that he had gotten married. Since he's new to MLB fans, the announcement wasn't quite as unexpected as Shohei Ohtani's during Spring Training last year, but it was still pretty amusing.

According to Google Translate Sasaki thanked everyone for their support and said he had married a "non-celebrity" and was full of "hope and anxiety" as he begins his new personal and professional life.

The wedding vows probably don't translate perfectly either, but as long as his pitches do, the couple should be all set for a happy marriage.

Sasaki will make his Cactus League debut next week.

Levy's biggest Tottenham mistake laid bare after refusal to sign £317k-a-week superstar

Daniel Levy made a few high-profile mistakes during his time as Tottenham chairman, but one is now seriously coming back to haunt him.

Daniel Levy leaves behind mixed Tottenham legacy

Levy’s resignation after 24 years as head of the Lilywhites boardroom sent shockwaves throughout the world of football.

He was regularly the target of criticism and even protests towards the end of his tenure, following a perceived lack of on-field ambition when compared to Spurs’ big-spending Premier League rivals.

Levy oversaw just two major trophy wins — the Carling Cup in 2008 and Europa League this year — but helped to transform Tottenham into a financial powerhouse off the pitch.

The 63-year-old helped to instigate Spurs’ transformative move to their brand-new state-of-the-art stadium and training facilities, which have made them one of the highest-potential clubs in Europe for success.

Nearly three weeks ago, the news of his departure is still attracting plenty of debate, following reports that Levy was pushed to resign from Tottenham by the Lewis family and found out just hours before it was made official (The Times).

The chief made some pretty questionable calls as chair, not least the appointments of highly unsuitable managers which turned out to be disasters.

In terms of the transfer market, while there are plenty of success stories, one decision that’s now coming back to bite him is the refusal to strike a deal for PSG superstar Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman has resurrected his once-faltering career under Luis Enrique at the Parc des Princes, and fresh off the back of a stellar 24/25, he was crowned this year’s Ballon d’Or winner on Monday evening.

Dembele’s staggering 35 goals and 16 assists in all competitions last season, including an heroic Champions League final display against Inter Milan, gifted PSG a long-awaited treble whilst etching his name into the club’s history.

His winner away to Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals also turned out to be crucial, with the £317,000-per-week attacker starring in multiple positions as both a centre-foward and wide player across 24/25.

Tottenham refused chance to sign Ousmane Dembélé in 2022

Looking back to three years ago, it is now very interesting to note that Tottenham were actually offered the chance to sign Dembele

That is according to reliable journalist Alasdair Gold, who reported at the time that it was a ‘polite no’ to the opportunity of negotiating a deal for this year’s European player of the year.

This blunt response to Barcelona’s offering of Dembélé is made all the more humbling for Levy, considering how the 28-year-old has set France alight since his move to PSG just one year after Tottenham were approached.

The ex-Barca flop’s rise back to the pinnacle of footballing stardom has been a wonder to behold after injuries largely dampened his time at the Camp Nou, with Enrique explaining that Dembele’s “impeccable” attitude was perhaps a key factor.

Now, it is highly unlikely Spurs will get such a chance to sign him again, and it further highlights just how quickly things can change in football.

Shubman Gill fined for slow over-rate in GT's win against DC

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill has been fined after his team was found to have maintained a slow over-rate in the IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Ahmedabad on Saturday.”As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the IPL said in a statement.Gill joined Axar Patel (DC), Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals – RR), Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB), Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants – LSG), Riyan Parag (RR) and Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians – MI) in the list of captains who have been penalised for slow over-rate offences so far this season. Unlike last year, however, the IPL has done away with player bans for repeat over-rate offences and will only levy demerit points and fines, in addition to in-game penalties.Gill had chosen to bowl first in hot conditions in Ahmedabad, where the maximum temperature hit 40C. There were frequent stoppages as players struggled in the extreme weather. DC scored 203 for 8, a total that GT chased down with seven wickets in hand and four balls to spare. Jos Buttler was the Player of the Match for scoring an unbeaten 97 off 54 balls in the chase. The victory took GT to the top of the points table with five wins in seven games, level on ten points with DC but ahead on net run-rate. The game marked the halfway point in the league stage, with all ten teams having played seven games each.

Dominic Solanke goes under the knife! Spurs striker reveals he has undergone surgery on recurring ankle injury in fresh injury blow to Thomas Frank's side

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke has undergone "minor surgery" to resolve a persistent ankle injury. The ex-Bournemouth man has been struggling for fitness in the 2025/26 season, with last appearance for the Lilywhites coming against Manchester City on August 23. He was absent from training on Monday, and did not feature in Thomas Frank's squad for his side's 1-1 draw against Bodo/Glimt.

  • Solanke posts Instagram update on surgery

Solanke took to his personal Instagram account to provide an update to the Tottenham faithful.

His message, posted to his Instagram Stories read: "Hi everyone, quick update about my current situation.

"The last few months have been very frustrating as I've tried everything possible to tray and push through my ankle issue before taking the option of surgery.

"None of this managed to solve the proble, so we had to go ahead with minor surgery which I underwent this morning (September 30). It was all successful so hopefully I'll be back on the pitch in the very near future!

"Thank you for all your love and messages."

No schedule provided for Solanke's return

Solanke's update comes after Frank had informed reporters of the impending procedure ahead of Tottenham's Champions League tie with Bodo/Glimt. The manager referred to the surgery as "small", but did not provide a prognosis or a schedule for the England international's return. When asked if the club could have opted for surgery sooner, Frank replied: "No, I think you can look at it two ways. That is the easy answer but it is not that easy because if we knew we could have done the surgery a month ago, we probably would have done it.

"For me I am always 'it is what it is'. We deal with it now and no doubt the way we dealt with it was because we thought that was the right thing. In general no-one wants surgery."

  • Frank's attacking options without Solanke

Despite promising signs under Frank, Tottenham have been dealt a number of injuries in the attacking third. Randal Kolo Muani has made just one appearance since joining from Paris Saint Germain on a season-long loan, a 13 minute cameo from the bench against Villareal in the Champions League.

Solanke's persistent problems and Kolo Muani's stuttering start to life in N17 has provided Richarlison with the bulk of the opportunities in attack. The Brazilian has filled the void admirably, netting three times in the Premier League in six appearances.

Richarlison has spoken before of his gratitude towards Frank for the faith he has shown in him, saying: “It was very important (Frank said he would start). Since I got here, every time the transfer window opens, my name is circled as one who could leave – going back to Brazil or wherever.

“But I’ve always been focused on Tottenham and I’ve never had a conversation about leaving. I’m in a good moment.

“I hope to continue working hard and getting the opportunity to give my best.”

Do Spurs have the squad to compete in four competitions?

Last season saw injuries ravage Ange Postecoglou's squad, as the now Nottingham Forest manager opted to funnel his resources towards the Europa League ultimately netting him and the club a priceless piece of silverware.

Of course, that triumph did not keep him in his position, as Tottenham finished in 17th place in the Premier League. Since Postecoglou's firing, Spurs have invested heavily in their squad, and look to be a far more robust outfit, especially in attack. Even with Solanke's injury, as well as long term knee ailments for Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, Frank can call upon Richarlison, Kolo Muani, Mohamed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Brennan Johnson and Mathys Tel in the attacking third.

He will need all of his charges firing if Tottenham are to compete in multiple competitions this term. October sees Spurs face a tricky away tie against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and travel to Monaco in the Champions League. This Saturday, their league campaign continues with a journey to Elland Road to take on Leeds, just days after they drew 2-2 with Bodo/Glimt in the Arctic Circle.

Van der Dussen: 'Don't have to be a rocket scientist' to know India have advantage

“If you can stay in one place, stay in one hotel, practise in the same facilities, play in the same stadium, on the same pitches every time, it’s definitely an advantage”

Firdose Moonda27-Feb-20252:32

Do India have an unfair advantage at the Champions Trophy?

South Africa are not in a position to think about this yet, but should they need to travel to Dubai for a Champions Trophy semi-final or final, they will be at a disadvantage compared to their opposition, India, who have been based in the UAE. That’s according to Rassie van der Dussen, who said you “don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know” that the ability to train and play in one place coupled with the absence of any inter-city or inter-country travel gives India an edge that they will be under pressure to fully exploit.”It’s definitely an advantage. I saw that Pakistan was commenting about it, but it’s definitely an advantage. If you can stay in one place, stay in one hotel, practice in the same facilities, play in the same stadium, on the same pitches every time, it’s definitely an advantage,” van der Dussen said in Karachi, where South Africa will play their last group game against England. “I don’t think you have to be a rocket scientist to know that. The onus would be on them to use that advantage. In a sense, it puts more pressure on them because whoever is going to play them in the semi or potentially the final is going to go there and the conditions are going to be foreign, but they [India] are going to be used to it. The pressure would be on them to get it right because they have all that knowledge.”The Champions Trophy is being played with a hybrid model after India were refused permission by their government to travel to Pakistan, the official hosts, and the ICC board voted in favour of their matches, including any against Pakistan, to be held at a neutral venue. Pakistan will be given the same treatment for events held in India for the duration of the current event cycle, which lasts until 2027. Last week, Pakistan travelled to Dubai to play their marquee clash against India and lost, which ultimately saw them exit the tournament at the group stage. Van der Dussen referred to comments Pakistan’s head coach Aaqib Javed made in the aftermath where he played down suggestions that India had the upper hand from the outset.Related

SA and Australia to travel to Dubai due to tangled Champions Trophy scheduling

Group B scenarios: How can Afghanistan qualify? Are South Africa favourites to finish on top?

“See, they are in Dubai for a reason,” Aaqib said. “If they are playing in Dubai for a reason, definitely if you play on the same pitch or ground, you will have an advantage. But we are not losing because they had the advantage of the same hotel and pitch . It’s not just because of the pitch, and neither did they play some ten matches there.”But absent Australia captain Pat Cummins also saw things from van der Dussen’s perspective, when he told Yahoo Sports Australia that India would hold a “huge advantage” from playing all their matches in Dubai. “I think it’s good that the tournament can go on, but obviously it does give them [India] a huge advantage playing on the same ground.” He said. “They already look very strong and they’ve got that obvious benefit of playing all their games there.””As a team, team-wise, conditions-wise, we’ve got everything in the locker to adapt to what’s going to be in front of us”•Getty ImagesOne of the gains India have is the certainty that comes with knowing the venue of all their games, including the knockouts, while other teams will have to wait to confirm their arrangements. In this case, while the outcome of the Afghanistan vs Australia game on Friday could confirm Group B’s semi-finalists, the positions in the group will only be known after South Africa’s match against England on Saturday. Should South Africa qualify for the semi-finals, they will either play India in Dubai on Tuesday or New Zealand in Lahore on Wednesday.Asked which he would prefer, van der Dussen indicated the latter but said the team would be up for either task. “If it’s a personal thing, I would say playing in Lahore because it’s just good to bat there. The Dubai pitch is not as high-scoring as the Lahore [pitch], but no, I don’t think it really matters,” he said. “Probably logistically it will be easier to play in Lahore. You don’t have to go through an international flight and go to Dubai and literally go to another country to play. Lahore is not too far from where we are at the moment [Karachi], so conditions are fairly similar. It’s literally one of those things, we don’t know what’s going to happen until Saturday evening.”Though South Africa have been in Pakistan for almost three weeks, playing in a mini tri-series before the Champions Trophy, and have selected their squad accordingly, van der Dussen said they had the resources for any venue. “As a team, team-wise, conditions-wise, we’ve got everything in the locker to adapt to what’s going to be in front of us. I’m not too worried as a team. There’s no location that will suit us better or worse.”

Newcastle chiefs confident £40m star with "nose for goals" is set to join

Newcastle United face a predicament in their striker department, but club chiefs are now confident one of their targets will join before the transfer deadline.

While on the Asia leg of their preseason tour, Eddie Howe held a press conference where he addressed poor player attitudes, stating: “You have to earn the right to train with us.”

Alexander Isak has not earned this right in the manager’s eyes, and has been “ordered to train separately from his teammates and stay away from a lunchtime training-ground barbecue”.

The departures of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, as well as the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, have led to an opening in Liverpool’s forward line that Arne Slot wants Isak to fill, and based on his behaviour, it’s clear that the Sweden international shares this desire.

With Isak causing issues in the dressing room, Howe has set his sights on a new Premier League-proven striker who wants to join the club.

Newcastle "confident" they can sign Wissa

GiveMeSport have reported that Newcastle are eyeing a double swoop of Yoane Wissa and Ollie Watkins following the club’s failure to sign Benjamin Sesko. Of the two players, Wissa looks the most likely to join, as “there is confidence a deal can be done for around £40m before the September 1st deadline”.

Yoane Wissa

The report indicates Wissa’s desire to play Champions League football and believes that will help them secure the move. Last week’s report from The I that Wissa had been “refusing to train in an attempt to push through a move” will also have boosted Howe’s confidence in getting the deal done.

Wissa would be the latest star to leave Brentford this summer, alongside club captain Christian Nørgaard and fellow forward Bryan Mbeumo. However, the club’s biggest loss this summer is undoubtedly Thomas Frank, who had managed the club since 2018.

Frank gambled on bringing in Wissa from Lorient in 2021, and in 2023, he poured praise on his development as a finisher: “Wissa, we knew, has always been a goalscorer. He scored seven goals in the first season and seven in the second in the Premier League, for a player that didn’t play much. It’s remarkable. I definitely think he is best as a 9. He’s got that nose for goals.”

Wissa is an underrated Premier League star

Although he might not have been the first name on Newcastle’s shopping list, he could still end up as one of the best signings this summer if they can get it across the line. Where Frank clearly saw Wissa’s value and potential, the Congo star has not always received the praise he deserves, sometimes falling under the shadow of players like Mbeumo and Ivan Toney.

Wissa’s record against the Premier League’s “Big Six” proves that he can perform in the toughest fixtures.

This impressive record is likely why he is such a high-value target for Howe. This will be Newcastle’s first season in the restructured Champions League, meaning they will face more big sides than ever before, so Wissa’s proven track record in the big games will potentially help them reach the later rounds.
